Notes: 1-Ethoxy-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl esters of acrylic (I) and methacrylic (II) acids were synthesized from 1-ethoxy-2,2,2-trifluoroethanol and acryloyl- and methacryloylchloride, respectively, and their densities, mass, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectra were measured and the rate constants of hydrolysis were determined. Poly(I) and poly(II) were prepared by radical homopolymerization; the rates of polymerization, specific volume contractions in polymerization, limiting viscosity numbers, average number degrees of polymerization, temperature dependences of the heat capacities both in glass and liquid state, glass transition temperatures, and the initial temperature of the spontaneous thermal decomposition of homopolymers were determined. The monomer reactivity ratios of the styrene (S) copolymerizations, S—I and S—II, and the Alfrey-Price copolymerization constants e and Q for I and II were calculated from the composition of copolymers of I and II with styrene.

Notes: A number of copolymers of styrene with substituted N-phenylmaleimides were synthesized and their solutions in chloroform were used in the casting of homogeneous membranes. The latter were applied in the separation of variously concentrated ethanol - water mixtures by pervaporation at 35°C. The membranes were characterized by the separation factor related to preferentially transported water and by the flux of the permeate. In contrast to membranes made from copolymers of styrene with N-phenylmaleimide, the separation factor of membranes containing substituted N-phenylmaleimides increased with increasing amount of ethanol in the feed solution. The effect of incorporated imide units on the properties of the membranes under investigation is discussed. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: New quaternary ammonium monomers derived from N-(dimethylaminophenyl)-maleimides were prepared and characterized. Their copolymerization with vinyl compounds and modification of the polymers of the starting imides with methyl iodides yielded copolymers containing trimethyl(maleimidophenyl)ammonium units. Membranes based on crosslinked imide copolymers were prepared, and their properties were determined after quaternization of the tertiary amino groups.

Description / Table of Contents: Die radikalische Copolymerisation des N-(2-Methyl-5-dimethylaminophenyl)maleinimids (I) mit Styren (S), Methylmethacrylat (MMA), 2-Dimethylaminoethylmethacrylat (DAMA), Acrylnitril (AN), Methacrylsäure (MA) und Isopren (IP) wurde verfolgt.
Notes: The radical copolymerization of N-(2-methyl-5-dimethylaminophenyl)maleimide (I) with styrene (S), methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DAMA), acrylonitrile (AN), methacrylic acid (MA), and isoprene (IP) was investigated. The reactivity ratios of pairs of monomers I - S, I - MMA were determined, and the Alfrey-Price constants e, Q of the imide I were calculated. Along with the copolymerization of I with IP, the Diels-Alder addition proceeding in parallel was also followed.
