Notes: Abstract: Actinomycetes produce and export small autoregulalory molecules, which act like prokaryotic hormones. They can promote or induce sporulation, aerial hyphae formation and antibiotic production. The mode of action of the λ-lactone AF is partly elucidated, those of the others are not known. These autoregulators (hormones) are effective if exogenously added to culture in proper time of the life cycle and in very low concentration. Since they influence the length of idiophase where secondary metabolites are produced their study may have pratical importance.

Notes: Abstract The iron K-emission line of Cyg X-2 was detected from the TENMA observation. The centre energy, the equivalent width and the intrinsic line width are 6.7 keV, ∼30 eV, and less than 0.6 keV, respectively. These properties indicate that the observed line is mostly due to helium-like iron and the electron scattering depth of the line emitting region is smaller than three.

Notes: Abstract Broadband high level squeezing was clearly observed from 100 kHz to 80 MHz using crystals Ba2NaNb5O15 of 5 mm length, MgO:LiNbO3 of 19 mm length and KNbO3 of 5.8 mm length. Maximum noise reductions detected on a spectrum analyzer were −1.2 dB (−24%), −1.25 dB (−25%), and −1.8 dB (−34%) for the three crystals, respectively. The maximum squeezing is limited mostly by “optical index damage” of the parametric crystals. A detailed analysis of the beam parameters traced along the pump beam, squeezed vacuum, etc. is given. A detailed discussion on the evaluation of the initial squeezed level is given. A preliminary experiment with compressed laser pulses to avoid the optical damage is also described.

Notes: Abstract A microbial sensor consisting of immobilized Thiobacillus thiooxidans, a gas-permeable membrane, and an O2 electrode was prepared for the determination of sulphide. When a sample solution containing sulphide was passed into the flow cell, the output of the microbial sensor decreased markedly with time until a steady state was reached. The total time required for an assay was 20–30 min by the steady-state method. In the pulse method, the total time required for an assay was about 5 min. A linear relationship was obtained between the sensor output and the concentration of sodium sulphide below 0.40 mm. The minimum detectable concentration of sodium sulphide was 0.02 mm. Selectivity of the sensor was satisfactory. The microbial sensor was applied to the determination of sulphide in spring water. A good agreement was obtained between the microbial sensor and the methylene blue method. The regression coefficient was 0.97 for five experiments. The activity of the microbial membrane was stable for more than 25 days. The response was reproducible with 2.5% of the relative standard deviation when a sample solution containing 0.2 mm sodium sulphide was employed. *** DIRECT SUPPORT *** AG903053 00005

Notes: Abstract To investigate the development of the blood vessels forming the secondary ossification center in the femoral heads of growing rats, we observed the specimens of the proximal femurs having vascular casts using both an optical and a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Histologically, the vascular invasion occurred from the lateral part of the cartilaginous epiphysis, prior to the appearance of the ossification center. The vascular casts were prominent within the cellular spaces consisting of a few hypertrophic chondrocytes. The SEM study suggested that the vascular buds had peculiar structures and invaded the cartilaginous epithysis by breaking through the cellular spaces. The blood vessels budded out from the arch of the lateral epiphyseal vessels toward the femoral heads. The sizes of the large-caliber vascular buds of about 50 μm in diameter were similar to those of the cellular spaces, and they penetrated into the epiphysis by repeated merging and branching. Many deep impressions were noted on the surface of the vascular buds, and the tips showed the peculiar shape similar to a suction cup.

Notes: Summary Clinical and cytogenetic aspects of a female infant with trisomy 21 and the fragile X [fra (X)] chromosome are reported. Most of the facial characteristics of the patient are those observed in Down syndrome, but some features such as long face with prominent forehead and lower jaw, and large ears are related to the fra (X) syndrome. The origin of an additional chromosome 21 may be ascribed to maternal first meiotic nondisjunction in our case. It has been suspected that female carriers of the fra (X) chromosome may be predisposed to meiotic nondisjunctional events. However, there is probably no relationship between the two chromosomal abnormalities in our case because of the maternal age at the delivery.
