    Notes: Abstract Concentrations of m-Cl-peroxy benzoic acid (CPBA) higher than 0.1 mM decrease the ATP-content of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the presence of glucose in 1 min to less than 10% of the initial value. In the absence of glucose, 1.0 mM CPBA is necessary for a similar effect. After the rapid loss of ATP in the first min in the presence of glucose caused by 0.2 mM CPBA, the ATP-content recovers to nearly the initial value after 10 min. Aerobic glucose consumption and ethanol formation from glucose are both completely inhibited by 1.0 mM CPBA. Assays of the activities of nine different enzymes of the glycolytic pathway as well as analysis of steady state concentrations of metabolites suggest that glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase is the most sensitive enzyme of glucose fermentation. Phosphofructokinase and alcohol dehydrogenase are slightly less sensitive. Incubation for 1 or 10 min with concentrations of 0.05 to 0.5 mM CPBA causes a) inhibition of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, b) decrease of the ATP-content and c) a decrease of the colony forming capacity. From these findings it is concluded that the disturbance of the ATP-producing glycolytic metabolism by inactivation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase may be an explanation for cell death caused by CPBA.

    Notes: Abstract Treatment of a yeast suspension with ozone inactivates a number of cytosolic enzymes. Among 15 studied, the most drastic inactivation was found for glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and to lesser extents: NAD-glutamate dehydrogenase, pyruvate decarboxylase, phosphofructokinase-1 and NAD-alcohol dehydrogenase. Ozone treatment also effects the quantity of ATP and of other nucleoside triphosphates, reducing to about 50% of the initial value. The ATP missing in the cells appears in the medium. NAD and protein also accumulate in the medium suggesting that the yeast cells have been permeabilized. Permeabilization of the yeast cells by treatment with ozone preceeds the inactivation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and other cytosolic enzymes.

    Description: The high-pressure charnockites (P = 8 to 9 Kb., T = 700 to 800 C CO2-rich fluid regime) of the Nilgiri hills show evidence of retrogression related to shear deformation within the Moyar and Bhavani shear belts. Two types of retrogression have been noticed: (1) retrogression along shear planes, and (2) retrogression along pegmatitic veins. Initial stages of retrogression results in the formation of irregular, 2 to 3 cm to one meter wide bleached zones with the removal of greasy grey color of charnockites. Minor structures which were earlier obscured in charnockites are clearly seen in bleached areas. In intensely shear areas, formation of highly fissile grey gneiss results often with the development of flaser and mylonitic structures. Fluid inclusion studies and geochemical investigations carried out for serial samples collected from charnockite to gneiss indicate following features: (1) there is a gradual decrease in density of CO2-rich fluids from 1.073 to 0.821 g/cu cm; (2) interestingly, in many sections of the gneisses studied, there is almost complete absence of fluid inclusions suggesting that they would have decrepitated (this may be due to large pressure difference (2 to 3 Kb.) created between the interior and exterior of the fluid inclusions); and (3) presence of mixed CO2-H2O inclusions were noticed.

    Description: An overview is given of Landsat Thematic Mapper resampling technique, including a modification of the well-known cubic convolution interpolator (nearest neighbor interpolation) used to provide geometric correction for TM data. Post launch study has shown that the modified cubic convolution interpolator can selectively enhance or suppress frequency bands in the output image. This selectivity is demonstrated on TM Band 3 imagery.

    Description: We have calculated the resistivity due to a sequence of fluctuating weak double layers aligned parallel to the ambient magnetic field line. The average response of an electron drifting through a 1D randomly oriented array of WDLs is studied using a test particle approach. The average is taken over the randomly fluctuating values of the electric field associated with the double layers. Based on our calculations, we estimate that a 350 eV electron energy the thickness of the visual auroral arc is about 2.5 km and that of the auroral fine structure as about 250 m when mapped down to the ionosphere. The significance of our calculations is discussed in the context of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.
