Notes: A new method of predicting adsorption equilibria for multicomponent liquid solutions on solids has been developed which combines the thermodynamic and kinetic treatments of liquid adsorption. Multicomponent equilibria can be predicted using parameters obtained from binary adsorption data. The method requires the adsorbent capacities, the bulk and surface phase activity coefficients, and the binary adsorption equilibrium constants. The calculation procedure is simpler than other available methods. Predictions are made for the mixture of benzene, ethyl acetate, and cyclohexane on activated carbon at 303 K. The predictions are in quantitative agreement with published experimental data for this system.

Notes: Solid-state NMR and thermal analysis techniques were used to compare the mobility of poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) in the presence and absence of both alumina filler particles and plasticizer. The relative mobility of main-chain and side-chain carbons increases in the presence of both plasticizer and alumina as seen from an increase in the average cross-polarization rates, 〈TCH〉, and from a general decrease in the rotating frame spin-lattice relaxation rates, CT1ρ. Unlike the main-chain carbons, inversion recovery cross-polarization (IRCP) data on solution cast composites show that the side-chain methyl groups in neat PVB samples are best characterized by a monoexponential cross-polarization model. However, in the presence of alumina, a fraction of the methyl groups becomes less mobile as indicated by the biexponential IRCP behavior. Polymer phase mobility also increases below the critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC) as seen from decreasing transition temperatures using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This is accompanied by an increase in the rigidity of a portion of the polymer phase above the CPVC as indicated by an increase in the apparent Tg, along with an increase in the mobility of another portion as indicated by the appearance of a low-temperature DMA transition. These trends are consistent with an increase in polymer chain packing heterogeneity in the presence of alumina. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: The Heavy Nuclei Collection (HNC) is a passive array of stacks of a special glass, 14 sheets thick, that record tracks of ultraheavy cosmic rays for later readout by automated systems on Earth. The primary goal is to determine the relative abundances of both the odd- and even-Z cosmic rays with Z equal to or greater than 50 with statistics a factor at least 60 greater than obtained in HEAO-3 and to obtain charge resolution at least as good as 0.25 charge unit. The secondary goal is to search for hypothetical particles such as superheavy elements. The HNC detector array will have a cumulative collection power equivalent to flying 32 sq m of detectors in space for 4 years. The array will be flown as a free-flight spacecraft and/or attached to Space Station Freedom.

Description: The work performed in support of the EPA/DOE MADS (Mesoscale Acid Deposition) Project included the development of meteorological data bases for the initialization of chemistry models, the testing and implementation of new planetary boundary layer parameterization schemes in the MASS model, the simulation of transport and precipitation for MADS case studies employing the MASS model, and the use of the TASS model in the simulation of cloud statistics and the complex transport of conservative tracers within simulated cumuloform clouds. The work performed in support of the NASA/FAA Wind Shear Program included the use of the TASS model in the simulation of the dynamical processes within convective cloud systems, the analyses of the sensitivity of microburst intensity and general characteristics as a function of the atmospheric environment within which they are formed, comparisons of TASS model microburst simulation results to observed data sets, and the generation of simulated wind shear data bases for use by the aviation meteorological community in the evaluation of flight hazards caused by microbursts.
