Notizen: Abstract Concentrations of m-Cl-peroxy benzoic acid (CPBA) higher than 0.1 mM decrease the ATP-content of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the presence of glucose in 1 min to less than 10% of the initial value. In the absence of glucose, 1.0 mM CPBA is necessary for a similar effect. After the rapid loss of ATP in the first min in the presence of glucose caused by 0.2 mM CPBA, the ATP-content recovers to nearly the initial value after 10 min. Aerobic glucose consumption and ethanol formation from glucose are both completely inhibited by 1.0 mM CPBA. Assays of the activities of nine different enzymes of the glycolytic pathway as well as analysis of steady state concentrations of metabolites suggest that glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase is the most sensitive enzyme of glucose fermentation. Phosphofructokinase and alcohol dehydrogenase are slightly less sensitive. Incubation for 1 or 10 min with concentrations of 0.05 to 0.5 mM CPBA causes a) inhibition of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, b) decrease of the ATP-content and c) a decrease of the colony forming capacity. From these findings it is concluded that the disturbance of the ATP-producing glycolytic metabolism by inactivation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase may be an explanation for cell death caused by CPBA.

Notizen: Abstract Treatment of a yeast suspension with ozone inactivates a number of cytosolic enzymes. Among 15 studied, the most drastic inactivation was found for glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and to lesser extents: NAD-glutamate dehydrogenase, pyruvate decarboxylase, phosphofructokinase-1 and NAD-alcohol dehydrogenase. Ozone treatment also effects the quantity of ATP and of other nucleoside triphosphates, reducing to about 50% of the initial value. The ATP missing in the cells appears in the medium. NAD and protein also accumulate in the medium suggesting that the yeast cells have been permeabilized. Permeabilization of the yeast cells by treatment with ozone preceeds the inactivation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and other cytosolic enzymes.

Notizen: Abstract Mass resolved fission fragment angular distribution was measured in the 28.5 MeV alpha induced fission of233U using recoil catcher technique and direct gamma spectrometry. The angular distribution of 8 fission products were obtained. The angular anisotropies of asymmetric fission products were found to be higher than those of symmetric products indicating a correlation between the fragment angular distribution and the mass distribution.

Notizen: Abstract Independent isomeric yield ratios of128Sb were determined radiochemically in the thermal neutron induced fission of241Pu and 34 MeV alpha particle induced fission of238U, both involving the same compound nucleus (242Pu). Fragment angular momenta estimated from the measured isomer ratios using the statistical model analysis showed significantly larger fragment angular momenta in the medium energy fissioning system compared to the low energy fissioning system. This has been attributed to the effect of higher excitation energy and angular momentum in the entrance channel leading to increased fragment temperature, moments of inertia and angular velocity. An attempt was made to calculate the fragment angular momentum in the medium energy fission using the Fermi gas model for the fissioning nucleus, taking into account the multichance fission, saddle shapes of the fissioning nuclei and the angular velocity components of the fissioning nuclei both along and orthogonal to the fission axis. The calculated angular momenta agree well with the experimental results.

Notizen: Abstract Independent isomeric yield ratios of132I were radiochemically determined in alpha particle induced fission of238U in the energy range 25–44 MeV. Fission fragment angular momenta were deduced from the measured isomeric yield ratios using spin dependent statistical model analysis. It was seen that angular momentum of132I increases with increase of excitation energy and angular momentum of the fissioning nucleus. Comparison of the present data on132I in238U(α,f) with the literature data for the same product in238U(p, f) and238U(γ, f) at various excitation energies show that fragment angular momentum strongly depends on the input angular momentum in the range of excitation energy considered. Experimental fragment angular momentum at all excitation energies were seen to be in agreement with the theoretical values calculated based on thermal equilibration of the various collective rotational degrees after considering the occurence of multichance fission. Thus, strong effect of input angular momentum as well as the statistical equilibration among the various collective rotational degrees of freedom in medium energy fission is corroborated.
