Notes: Summary A chromosomal survey using standard lymphocyte cultures employing different media and G-banding techniques was initiated in 1984. This study became particularly important following the tragic gaseous exposure of the population in Bhopal at midnight on 2 December 1984. We have been able to formulate a chromosomal profile for each person whom we have studied; during 1986–1988, 154 persons were examined twice. Among seemingly normal individuals, as many as 20% might possess some chromosomal abnormality; of these, 50% may develop, at a later date, some kind of pathological complication (such as tumours, recurrent abortion or transmission of defects to their offspring). The people exposed to methyl isocyanate have repeatedly shown Robertsonian translocations, mostly in acrocentric chromosomes 13 and 21. Other types of translocations have been studied among all exposed (53) and normal (101) persons; the involvement of chromosomes 5, 9, 11, 14 and 16 is statistically significant (P= 〈0.001). One of the major clinical symptoms is dyspnoea; we have estimated that almost all seriously dyspnoeic patients have developed at least two categories of chromosomal aberrations, one of which is Robertsonian translocation, in at least 10% metaphases. Our chromosomal survey will be of significance because we are able to identify people with chromosomal aberrations that might be correlated with future pathological consequences of the accident. The “chromosomal load” that can be sustained with an apparently normal phenotype can also be measured.

Notes: Abstract The unsteady viscous incompressible flow around a circular cylinder is studied numerically for high Reynolds number. The two dimensional Navier-Stokes equation in stream function-vorticity formulation is solved. A fractional step method is used to solve the stream function equation while the vorticity transport equation is solved using a third order upwinding scheme. The computed solutions by the finite difference method agree reasonably well with the available experimental and other computational results at a Reynolds number of 9500 and 4500. These comparisons are for the initial stages of flow evolution when the wake bubble is symmetric.

Notes: Abstract The computation of the orientational averages is a great problem in the case of semicrystalline polymers. In a previous communication [1] it has been shown that sinθ=f(λ) sinθ′ describes the orientational changes satisfactorily for a certain class of polymers. In this paper some alternative deformation schemes are also discussed. It has been concluded that birefringence provides a useful guideline in the choice of a deformation scheme.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we examine a queueing problem motivated by the pipeline polling protocol in satellite communications. The model is an extension of the cyclic queueing system withM-limited service. In this service mechanism, each queue, after receiving service on cyclej, makes a reservation for its service requirement in cyclej + 1. The main contribution to queueing theory is that we propose an approximation for the queue length and sojourn-time distributions for this discipline. Most approximate studies on cyclic queues, which have been considered before, examine the means only. Our method is an iterative one, which we prove to be convergent by using stochastic dominance arguments. We examine the performance of our algorithm by comparing it to simulations and show that the results are very good.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we study a discriminatory processor sharing queue with Poisson arrivals,K classes and general service times. For this queue, we prove a decomposition theorem for the conditional sojourn time of a tagged customer given the service times and class affiliations of the customers present in the system when the tagged customer arrives. We show that this conditional sojourn time can be decomposed inton+1 components if there aren customers present when the tagged customer arrives. Further, we show that thesen+1 components can be obtained as a solution of a system of non-linear integral equations. These results generalize known results about theM/G/1 egalitarian processor sharing queue.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we consider a single server queue in which arrivals occur according to a Poisson process and each customer's service time is exponentially distributed. The server works according to the gated process-sharing discipline. In this discipline, the server provides service to a batch of at mostm customers at a time. Once a batch of customers begins service, no other waiting customer can receive service until all members of the batch have completed their service. For this queue, we derive performance characteristics, such as waiting time distribution, queue length distribution etc. For this queue, it is possible to obtain the mean conditional response time for a customer whose service time is known. This conditional response time is a nonlinear function (as opposed to the linear case for the ordinary processor-sharing queue). A special case of the queue (wherem=∞) has an interesting and unusual solution. For this special case, the size of the batch for service is a Markov chain whose steady state distribution can be explicitly written down. Apart from the contribution to the theory of Markov chains and queues, the model may be applicable to scheduling of computer and communication systems.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we study a queueing model of assembly-like manufacturing operations. This study was motivated by an examination of a circuit pack testing procedure in an AT & T factory. However, the model may be representative of many manufacturing assembly operations. We assume that customers fromn classes arrive according to independent Poisson processes with the same arrival rate into a single-server queueing station where the service times are exponentially distributed. The service discipline requires that service be rendered simultaneously to a group of customers consisting of exactly one member from each class. The server is idle if there are not enough customers to form a group. There is a separate waiting area for customers belonging to the same class and the size of the waiting area is the same for all classes. Customers who arrive to find the waiting area for their class full, are lost. Performance measures of interest include blocking probability, throughput, mean queue length and mean sojourn time. Since the state space for this queueing system could be large, exact answers for even reasonable values of the parameters may not be easy to obtain. We have therefore focused on two approaches. First, we find upper and lower bounds for the mean sojourn time. From these bounds we obtain the asymptotic solutions as the arrival rate (waiting room, service rate) approaches zero (infinity). Second, for moderate values of these parameters we suggest an approximate solution method. We compare the results of our approximation against simulation results and report good correspondence.

Notes: Abstract SenGupta and Pal (1991,J. Statist. Plann. Inference,29, 145–155) have recently obtained the locally optimal test for zero intraclass correlation coefficient in symmetric multivariate normal mixtures, with known mixing proportion, for the case when the common mean,m, and the common variance, σ2, are known. Here, we establish that even under the general situation, when some or none ofm and σ2 are known, simple optimal tests can be derived, which are locally most powerful similar, whose exact cut-off points are already available and which retain all the previous optimality properties, e.g. unbiasedness, monotonicity and consistency. Some power tables are presented to demonstrate the favorable performances of these tests.
