Notes: Abstract Detection of DNA synthesizing cells may often be achieved by immunocytochemical detection of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU), which is rapid and appears to give similar results to those found using tritiated thymidine. However, the methodology for detection of BrdU involves a denaturation or digestion step to allow access of the antibody to BrdU incorporated into single- rather than double-stranded DNA. We wished to determine if microwave treatment could be used to enhance the detection of BrdU without the need for any other digestion/denaturation steps. An important consideration was to investigate whether such treatment produces a similar quantitative result, since BrdU detection is usually assessed on the basis of cell number rather than topographical distribution. We have found that microwave treatment can allow considerably lower antibody concentrations and eliminates the need for any other denaturation step. It also reduces the non-specific background staining found when using monoclonal antibodies on mouse tissue. We have performed cell counts and found that the number of BrdU positive cells remains constant for a range of different immunocytochemical parameters. We also report conditions where immunopositivity is adversely affected by changes in technique and describe the optimised conditions for obtaining reproducible results.

Notes: Abstract The film formation method has been successfully used to grow single crystals and other complex morphological features of low melting form (LMF) and high melting form (HMF) of trans-1,4-polyisoprene (TPIP). Below 40 °C dilute amyl acetate solution gave hexagonal shaped LMF crystals. Thick and elongated hexagonal shaped morphology was shown by HMF crystals at temperatures above 40 °C. Straight faces and sharp corners of the single crystals, and also of complex crystals, acquired round shapes when highly polydispersed TPIP was used for crystallization.

Notes: Abstract Waste liquor from caprolactam manufacture contains many mono- and di-carboxylic acids. Of four yeasts tested, Yarrowia lipolytica DS-1 was the best at decreasing Chemical Oxygen Demand values, by up to 60% with 50 and 100 g waste liquor/after 48 h. Caproic, butyric and valeric acids were utilized most easily. Adipic acid was not decreased below 13% (w/v).

Notes: 3-Carboxy-4-hydroxyacetophenone (CHAP) was polycondensed with various proportions of formaldehyde using alcoholic alkali as catalyst. The resin samples, designated as CHAP-F, have been characterized by elemental analyses and IR spectroscopy, by estimation of their number average molecular weights (M̄n), by measurement of intrinsic viscosity, and by TGA. Polymeric metal chelates of one CHAP-F sample with Cu2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, and UO22+ ions have been prepared and characterized.Ion-exchanging properties of one CHAP-F resin sample for Fe3+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ metal ions are studied by the application of the batch-equilibration method.

Notes: Polyethers are prepared by condensing, respectively, 2,4-dichloroquinoline and its 6-methyl and 6-methoxy derivatives separately with ethylene, propylene, butylene, diethylene and triethylene glycols. These polyethers are characterized and the electrical conductivity of polyethers is measured at various temperatures up to 150°C.

Notes: Abstract A new and simple method for selective spectrophotometric determination of uranium(VI) with 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR) and N-octylacetamide into benzene over pH 7.0–9.0 is described. The molar absorptivity of the complex with 9 different amides is in the range of (0.40–3.2)·104 1·mol−1·cm−1 at the absorption maximum. Out of these, the most sensitive compound N-octylacetamide (OAA) was chosen for detailed studies in the present investigation. The detection limit of the method is 0.008 μg U·ml−1. The system obeys Beer's law in the range of 0–5 μg U·ml−1. The method is free from interferences of most of the common metal ions except vanadium(V) and copper(II), which are masked by proper masking agents. The composition of the complex is determined by curve-fitting method. The method has been applied for the recovery of the metal from rock samples and synthetic mixtures.
