Notes: Abstract Prelimary results of an extended program of coordinated X-ray and optical observations of TT Ari are presented. The object was observed on August 21/22 1985 both in X-rays (EXOSAT) and optical range, about 100 days after the return to the active state. The first detailed simultaneous study of TT Ari in active state indicates the presence of strongly absorbing structure in the system.

Notes: Abstract After general remarks on the diffuse interstellar lines (DIL) the necessity to select the objects under investigation upon astrophysical criteria is stressed. The dependence on galactic longitude of the relative strength of the DIL at λ=4430 Å is given. A possible connection between the strength of DIL originating in stellar aggregates and radiation density is shown and discussed.

Notes: Abstract A novel atomic lens scheme is reported. A cylindrical lens potential was created by a large period (⋍ 45 μm) standing light wave perpendicular to a beam of metastable He atoms. The lens aperture (25 μm) was centered in one antinode of the standing wave; the laser frequency was nearly resonant with the atomic transition 23 S 1−23 P 2 (λ=1.083 μm) and the interaction time was significantly shorter than the spontaneous lifetime (100 ns) of the excited state. The thickness of the lens was given by the laser beam waist (40 μm) in the direction of the atomic beam. Preliminary results are presented, where an atomic beam is focused down to a spot size of 4 μm. Also, a microfabricated grating with a period of 8 μm was imaged. We discuss the principle limitations of the spatial resolution of the lens given by spherical and chromatic aberrations as well as by diffraction. The fact that this lens is very thin offers new perspectives for deep focusing into the nm range.

Notes: Summary The efficacy of different hexacyanoferrates(II) in preventing the enteral absorption of134Cs was studied in piglets. As compared to the controls, oral application of134Cs together with KFe[Fe(CN)6], NH4Fe[Fe(CN)6], or Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3 resulted in a strong reduction of the134Cs-uptake by more than 97%. The decrease in enteral absorption depends on the dose of administered hexacyanoferrate(II), whereas differences between the compounds under study were small. The biological half-life of134Cs in non-hexacyanoferrate(II) treated piglets was 21.6±3.3 days (mean±SD).

Notes: Summary 1. A preparation is described by which the wing hinge stretch receptor (SR) ofLocusta migratoria is mechanically isolated so that it can be subjected to stretch stimuli while avoiding interference with wing hinge mechanics. 2. Using this approach and sinusoidal stretches of different amplitudes the SR can be stimulated up to a definite saturation frequency. The discharge frequency at a given stretch and the saturation frequency both depend dramatically on ambient temperature. High instantaneous frequencies (up to 650 Hz, as found in flying locusts) were only obtained at a high temperature of 32 °C. 3. The instantaneous spike frequency of the SR in response to short stretches (within the time range of wing beat period) reflects exactly the amount of the stretch and not its rate of change. Thus, the SR is a receptor signalling the momentary position of the sclerites to which it is attached.

Notes: Abstract The effects of the four calcium channel blockers flunarizine, verapamil, diltiazem and nimodipine on motility and phototaxis of Chlamydomonas reinhardtio have been tested with a fully automated and computerized population system. Flunarizine inhibits motility transiently by causing the detachement of the flagella which, however, are regenerated during some hours. Phototaxis is inhibited to the same extent, but this is simply the result of the decreased motility and, hence, a non-specific effect. Verapamil causes also a detachement of the flagella with following regeneration, but in addition motility and phototaxis are inhibited by this drug to different extents, indicating the involvement of calcium channels in both processes. Diltiazem and nimodipine inhibit phototaxis without impairing motility, indicating that both processes are regulated in different ways. If diltiazem and nimodipine are applied simultaneously, no additive inhibitory effect can be observed. However, the combination of both blockers with verapamil causes and additive inhibitory effect as if verapamil is applied alone. By increasing the external calcium concentration from 10-4 M to 10-3 M the optimum of positive phototaxis is shifted to higher fluence rates. This shifting occurs also in the presence of channel blockers, but the strength of the positive reaction is influenced. These results point to the involvement of calcium channels in both phototaxis and motility, but simultaneously demonstrate the different sensitivity of the two processes to these drugs.

Notes: Abstract The degree of dissociation of oxygen has been measured in the positive column plasma of a glow discharge by two different methods (the ozone method and the Wrede-Harteck method). The results of both methods are in a good agreement. The pressure was varied from 66 to 266 Pa, the discharge current from 4 to 100 mA, and the discharge tube was of 2.0 cm inside diameter. As expected, the degree of dissociation increases with increasing discharge current and decreases with increasing pressure. Calculations of the degree of dissociation show that the main loss process of the oxygen atoms is caused by the recombination on the wall of the discharge tube for pressures up to several 100 Pa. We found that the value of the recombination coefficient for the glass wall of the discharge tube (γ≈4.6·10−4) is about a factor 2 larger than that for a tube outside of the discharge (γ≈2.2·10−4). Ozone processes, including metastable oxygen molecules, have increasing influence on the balance of the oxygen atoms as the pressure increases.
