Description / Table of Contents: The Antarctic fur seal Arctocephalus gezella has increased in numbers at Heard Island since the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) station was established in 1947. Increases have also been recorded at other breeding sites in the South Atlantic and South Indian Oceans this century, particulary at South Georgia. In the 1987-88 summer, fur seals at Heard Island were counted in several age and sex categories. The aims of the project were to determine the location of pupping sites, the extent of the pupping season and the size of the population, and to record the changes in numbers of animals ashore during the summer. Maps of the colonies and main haul-out areas, together with descriptions of census areas and tabulations of counts, provide a basis fr future comparison.

Description / Table of Contents: Biological studies commenced at the American station Wilkes in Wilkes Land, East Antarctica in 1957. In 1959 station operations were taken over by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) and maintained until 1969 when Casey station was commissioned. This report reviews the information on the fauna obtained by ANARE up to 1980. Studies on invertebrates were limited to ectoparasites of birds and seals. Interest was mostly in the avian and mammalian fauna. Extensive banding of Adélie penguins, southern giant petrels and southern fulmars was undertaken for dispersion and breeding studies. Breeding behaviours of southern fulmars and Antarctic petrels were studied. The main breeding locality of the Weddell seal in the area was located. The southern elephant seal was found to breed at the Windmill Islands, the only known breeding site on the Antarctic continent.

Description / Table of Contents: A comprehensive survey of the ice-sheet topography and surface physical characteristics was conducted by ANARE glaciological teams in eastern Wilkes Land during the period 1980-86. Oversnow operations were between 112°E and 132°E extending from the coast to 69°S and covered the elevation range 800-2300 m asl. This report presents the data set collected on the surface topography, and the spatial distribution of snow accumulation rates, snow surface microrelief and surface wind fields, snow surface physical properties and firn temperatures.

Description / Table of Contents: Sedimentary basins with a marine connection show significant stratigraphic variations that result from eustatic sea-level fluctuation. Other key factors that control stratigraphy include the availability of sediment and the role of tectonically induced subsidence and uplift. Tectonic activity is important in most sedimentary basins as it is a causal mechanism for the production of certain regionaland local-scale sequence boundaries, generating accommodation space, altering base levels and controlling source areas. This collection of academic and industrial studies addresses the relative roles of tectonics, eustasy and sediment supply in generating stratigraphy. This volume will be of interest to petroleum geologists and researchers in sequence stratigraphy.
