Notes: In the paper we address the problem of 2D adaptive quadrilateral mesh generation by using the variational principles. We first find the variational integral which generates the known grid system of curve-by-curve error equidistributions. We then use the same intergral to generate a new adaptive grid system which is superior to the known system in that the new system produces smoother meshes. Moreover, the new integral may be combined linearly with existing smoothness control integrals to yield more robust adaptive grid systems. Numerical results and comparisons are reported.

Notes: Transverse transmission concepts in the Fourier transmission domain for multilayer planar transmission medium are presented. This complete transverse transmission theory (TTT) is found to be a superset of different Fourier-transform-based numerical techniques widely used in guided wave analysis, namely the modematching method and the spectral-domain approach. The features of the theory are: the expansion of field quantities in longitudinal section (LSE/LSM) modes, the concept of rotation of the transverse field vectors, and a comprehnsive algorithm using recursive matrix standard form. It is shown that the mode-matching method and spectral-domain approach are generally equivalent except for the last step of imposing the final boundary conditions, and can therefore be summarized in a unified theory within the framework of TTT. In addition, a new parameter, the polarization coefficient, has been introduced to describe the field polarization of the guided wave in a quantitative manner. It is believed that the present theory will help us to gain more insight into hybrid mode propagation in multilayer planar circuits.

Notes: A comprehensive analysis procedure is presented to investigate mode propagation in a class of semiconductor-based transmission lines suitable for application in microwave or optoelectronic circuits. The method of lines (MoL) has been used to investigate single or multiconductor planar transmission line structures printed on a combination of insulating and semiconducting substrate. Homogeneous as well as inhomogeneous doping areas in the semiconductor are included in the theoretical formulation. Numerical results are presented for III-V semiconductor travelling wave electro-optic modulators in double-rib, multilayer strip waveguide configuration, microslabTM transmission lines with partial and full strip cover and slow-wave MIS microstrip/coplanar transmission lines on thick and thin film semiconductor substrate with gradually inhomogeneous doping layer.

Notes: A potential drop method, as used for estimations of crack lengths during three-point-beind experiments, is studied. The mechanical state is calculated using a finite element method. The deformed body obtained is used for a subsequent calculation of the electrostatic state. Calculations are performed for both two- and three-dimensional models. The material is assumed to be elastic, linearly hardening plastic and electrostatically linear. Large deformations are considered. Further, the non-linearity caused by the load, depending on the contact area between the cylinder on which the load is applied and the specimen, is considered. The increased contact area did not influence the mechanical state very much but had a direct impact on the electrostatic state. The changes in the potential drop recordings due to deformation and electrical current passing through the load cylinder were shown to be considerable. The study explains, at least partly, the experimental observations. A more reliable registration of crack growth initiation is the main outcome of the analysis.
