    Description: Direct Urca processes with hyperons and/or nucleon isobars can occur in dense matter as long as the concentration of Lambda hyperons exceeds a critical value that is less than 3 percent and is typically about 0.1 percent. The neutrino luminosities from the hyperon Urca processes are about 5-100 times less than the typical luminosity from the nucleon direct Urca process, if the latter process is not forbidden, but they are larger than those expected from other sources. These direct Urca processes provide avenues for rapid cooling of neutron stars which invoke neither exotic states nor the large proton fraction (of order 0.11-0.15) required for the nucleon direct Urca process.

    Description: A control system for autonomous distribution and control of electrical power during space missions is being developed. This system should free the astronauts from localizing faults and reconfiguring loads if problems with the power distribution and generation components occur. The control system uses an object-oriented simulation model of the power system and first principle knowledge to detect, identify, and isolate faults. Each power system component is represented as a separate object with knowledge of its normal behavior. The reasoning process takes place at three different levels of abstraction: the Physical Component Model (PCM) level, the Electrical Equivalent Model (EEM) level, and the Functional System Model (FSM) level, with the PCM the lowest level of abstraction and the FSM the highest. At the EEM level the power system components are reasoned about as their electrical equivalents, e.g, a resistive load is thought of as a resistor. However, at the PCM level detailed knowledge about the component's specific characteristics is taken into account. The FSM level models the system at the subsystem level, a level appropriate for reconfiguration and scheduling. The control system operates in two modes, a reactive and a proactive mode, simultaneously. In the reactive mode the control system receives measurement data from the power system and compares these values with values determined through simulation to detect the existence of a fault. The nature of the fault is then identified through a model-based reasoning process using mainly the EEM. Compound component models are constructed at the EEM level and used in the fault identification process. In the proactive mode the reasoning takes place at the PCM level. Individual components determine their future health status using a physical model and measured historical data. In case changes in the health status seem imminent the component warns the control system about its impending failure. The fault isolation process uses the FSM level for its reasoning base.

    Description: In most instances separate electrocatalysts are needed to promote the reduction of O2 in the fuel cell mode and to generate O2 in the energy storage-water electrolysis mode in aqueous electrochemical systems operating at low and moderate temperatures (T greater than or equal to 200 C). Interesting exceptions are the lead and bismuth ruthenate pyrochlores in alkaline electrolytes. These catalysts on high area carbon supports have high catalytic activity for both O2 reduction and generation (1,2). Rotating ring-disk electrode measurements provide evidence that the O2 reduction proceeds by a parallel four-electron pathway. The ruthenates can also be used as self-supported catalysts to avoid the problems associated with carbon oxidation, but the electrode performance so far achieved in the research at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is considerably less. At the potentials involved in the anodic mode the ruthenate pyrochlores have substantial equilibrium solubility in concentrated alkaline electrolyte. This results in the loss of catalyst into the bulk solution and a decline in catalytic activity. Furthermore, the hydrogen generation counter electrode may become contaminated with reduction products from the pyrochlores (lead, ruthenium). A possible approach to this problem is to immobilize the pyrochlore catalyst within an ionic-conducting solid polymer, which would replace the fluid electrolyte within the porous gas diffusion O2 electrode. For bulk alkaline electrolyte, an anion-exchange polymer is needed with a transference number close to unity for the Oh(-) ion. Preliminary short-term measurements with lead ruthenates using a commercially available partially-fluorinated anion-exchange membrane as an overlayer on the porous gas-fed electrode indicate lower anodic polarization and virtually unchanged cathodic polarization.

    Description: The high-pressure charnockites (P = 8 to 9 Kb., T = 700 to 800 C CO2-rich fluid regime) of the Nilgiri hills show evidence of retrogression related to shear deformation within the Moyar and Bhavani shear belts. Two types of retrogression have been noticed: (1) retrogression along shear planes, and (2) retrogression along pegmatitic veins. Initial stages of retrogression results in the formation of irregular, 2 to 3 cm to one meter wide bleached zones with the removal of greasy grey color of charnockites. Minor structures which were earlier obscured in charnockites are clearly seen in bleached areas. In intensely shear areas, formation of highly fissile grey gneiss results often with the development of flaser and mylonitic structures. Fluid inclusion studies and geochemical investigations carried out for serial samples collected from charnockite to gneiss indicate following features: (1) there is a gradual decrease in density of CO2-rich fluids from 1.073 to 0.821 g/cu cm; (2) interestingly, in many sections of the gneisses studied, there is almost complete absence of fluid inclusions suggesting that they would have decrepitated (this may be due to large pressure difference (2 to 3 Kb.) created between the interior and exterior of the fluid inclusions); and (3) presence of mixed CO2-H2O inclusions were noticed.

    Description: Fuel cells that can operate directly on fuels such as methanol are attractive for low to medium power applications in view of their low weight and volume relative to other power sources. A liquid feed direct methanol fuel cell has been developed based on a proton exchange membrane electrolyte and Pt/Ru and Pt catalyzed fuel and air/O2 electrodes, respectively. The cell has been shown to deliver significant power outputs at temperatures of 60 to 90 C. The cell voltage is near 0.5 V at 300 mA/cm(exp 2) current density and an operating temperature of 90 C. A deterrent to performance appears to be methanol crossover through the membrane to the oxygen electrode. Further improvements in performance appear possible by minimizing the methanol crossover rate.

    Description: The problem under study is convective flow in immiscible liquid layers with one or two horizontal interfaces. In one-g the flow results primarily from the buoyancy force acting perpendicular to the interfaces. This creates a fluid mechanical system in which the coupling of the fluid layers across an interface plays a fundamental role. The contribution of two horizontal interface tension forces is marginal. Interface tension driven flow requires testing in microgravity. A flight experiment on the Bubble, Drop, and Particle Unit (BDPU) is planned for the second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2) mission onboard the Shuttle in 1994. The flow velocity fields will be analyzed by a whole-field Particle Displacement Tracking (PDT) velocimetry technique. The capabilities of this technique to address fundamental issues, such as those regarding the flow stucture, will be discussed with a few sample experiments. Experimental and numerical flow patterns are compared.

    Description: The objective of phase two of a current investigation sponsored by NASA Langley Research Center is to demonstrate the measurement of aerodynamic forces/moments, including the effects of exhaust gases, in magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS) wind tunnels. Two propulsion simulator models are being developed: a small-scale and a large-scale unit, both employing compressed, liquified carbon dioxide as propellant. The small-scale unit was designed, fabricated, and statically-tested at Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI). The large-scale simulator is currently in the preliminary design stage. The small-scale simulator design/development is presented, and the data from its static firing on a thrust stand are discussed. The analysis of this data provides important information for the design of the large-scale unit. A description of the preliminary design of the device is also presented.

    Description: A feasibility study is presented of simulating airbreathing propulsion on small scale hypersonic models using laser energy. The laser heat addition scheme allows simultaneous inlet and exhaust flows during wind tunnel testing of models with scramjet models. The proposed propulsion simulation concept has extended the Kantrowitz (1974) idea to propulsive wind tunnel models of hypersonic aircraft. Critical issues in aeropropulsive testing of models based on a ramjet power plant are addressed which include transfer of the correct amount of energy to the flowing gas, efficient absorption of laser energy into the gas, and test performance under tunnel reservoir conditions and at reasonable Reynolds numbers.

    Description: The paper discusses the thermofluid analysis of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) fuelside preburner. The governing equations have been solved numerically to predict flow, heat transfer, mixing, and combustion. A two-fluid approach is adopted in which oxygen is regarded as one fluid and hydrogen is regarded as the other fluid. The chemical kinetics is assumed to be very fast so that combustion is primarily controlled by the rate of mixing between oxygen and hydrogen. The preburner pressure is much greater than the critical pressures of oxygen and hydrogen; hence, a gas-gas diffusion model (rather than an evaporation model) has been developed to compute the rate of interphase mixing. Empirical correlations have been incorporated to account for the effect of slip on the interphase exchange. A sensitivity study has been performed with various model parameters. It is observed that the model can predict possibility of incomplete combustion and local regions of high temperatures under steady operating conditions. Some of these anomalies have been observed in actual tests, and the numerical model is useful for understanding possible causes and remedies. At least some measurements are needed for quantitative verification of the model.
