Description: The optical and electrical characteristics of the various types of photodiodes potentially useful for UV radiometers were studied. It was concluded that both GaAsP and GaP photodiodes have advantages over silicon photodiodes in terms of spectral response and UV stability. Both GaAsP and GaP have excellent electrical characteristics for low frequency radiometers, although their high capacitance could be inconvenient for high frequency applications. GaAsP is particularly good with respect to dynamic range.

Description: The Goddard Infrared Array Camera was used to obtain a high resolution image of the nucleus of NGC 1068 at 12.4 microns. In addition, the peak emission at 12.4 microns relative to the peak of the optical continuum was determined. The distribution of the 12.4 micron emission relates to both the forbidden O III 5007A 'ionization cone' and the optical continuum emission imaged by HST. This distribution is also found to have an alignment perpendicular to the plane of a putative molecular torus. It is suggested that the extended mid-infrared emission is thermal radiation from dust in circumnuclear clouds heated by the collimated optical/UV AGN source. A portion of the unresolved 12.4 micron emission possibly originates from the torus. The infrared emission peak is found to coincide with the apex of the ionization cone, which is presumed to be the location of the torus.

Description: An atlas of the nuclear spectra of 58 Seyfert galaxies and six galaxies with nuclear H II regions is presented. For all but three galaxies, the range of rest wavelengths covered is about 6000-6800 A, with spectral resolution at H-alpha either 45 km/s or 130 km/s. Widths are given for the emission lines forbidden Fe VII 6086 A, forbidden O I 6300 A, H-alpha, forbidden N II 6584, and forbidden S II 6717,6731 A. In all, widths for some 210 lines in 53 galaxies are listed. A comparison is made between the present and previous line width measurements.
