    Description: The purpose of the Artemis Program is to gather vital scientific and engineering data by conducting robotic exploration missions on the lunar surface both prior to and concurrent with human missions. The Artemis Program includes rapid, near-term development of a variety of small experimental and operational payloads, a low-cost capacity to deliver these payloads to any location on the lunar surface, and the analysis of the data returned. The Artemis Program will provide opportunities to improve the understanding of lunar geosciences, to demonstrate the Moon's unique capacity as an astronomical platform to study the universe, to conduct scientific and technology development experiments, and to prepare for and complement human missions.

    Description: Mapping network control on the Moon is composed of a number of independent regional networks. These networks frequently have different origins but never have common ties, even in overlapping areas. The objective of the unified network program is to tie the regional networks into a single consistent planetwide control network. The plan is to start with the best defined regions, create common ties with neighboring data sets, and then expand into poorly defined regions. The most accurately defined points on the Moon are locations of the laser ranging retroreflectors and the VLBI measurements of the locations of the Apollo 15, 16, 17 ALSEP stations. Recent values for the coordinates of the retroreflectors have been received. The accuracy of these locations is about 30 m and their locations are used to define the center-of-mass and, hence, the origin of the unified lunar coordinate system. The coordinates of the retroreflectors are given in both principal axis and mean Earth/Polar axis systems. Mean Earth/Polar axis coordinates have been recommended by the IAU for the Moon. The difference in the coordinates is important, more than 600 m in latitude and longitude.

    Description: Spacecraft exploration of Marshas shown that the essential resources necessary for life support are present on the Martian surface. The key life-support compounds O2, N2, and H2O are available on Mars. The soil could be used as radiation shielding and could provide many useful industrial and construction materials. Compounds with high chemical energy, such as rocket fuels, can be manufactured in-situ on Mars. Solar power, and possibly wind power, are available and practical on Mars. Preliminary engineering studies indicate that fairly autonomous processes can be designed to extract and stockpile Martian consumables.

    Description: The Mars atmosphere is considered as a resource for water to support a human expedition. Information obtained from the Viking mission is used to estimate the near-surface water vapor level. The variability over the diurnal cycle is examined and periods of greatest water abundance are identified. Various methods for extracting atmospheric water are discussed including energy costs and the means for optimizing water extraction techniques.

A device was designed, and built in the university machine shop, that uses a projectile shot into concrete, thereby attaching a model spacecraft to the landing site.

    Description: The objective of the unified lunar control network is to combine a series of control networks into one compatible network with its origin at the center of mass of the Moon and its coordinates referred to the mean Earth/polar axis system. The initial unified system contained 130 nearside points from Apollo data and 1026 from telescopic data. It also contained ten Mariner 10 points. The total number of points was 1166. The current network includes modifications to the past network and extends the coverage. Coordinates of points north of the Apollo region have been recomputed based on Galileo images from the second Earth-Moon flyby. Coordinates of points in the Apollo region were held fixed; however, coordinates of points north of the Apollo region in the telescopic region and many Mariner 10 points were recomputed. All of the Mariner 10 points were remeasured and integrated into the network. Additional points in the Apollo region including the farside have been added. The unified network now contains 1478 points. Apollo, Mariner 10, and Galileo pictures all contained some farside points. The coordinates of the 1478 points are available only in the microfiche supplement to this paper.

    Description: We examine quantitatively the suggestion that the heavy anomalous isotopes of Xe-HL found in meteoritic diamonds were produced by a short intense neutron burst and then implanted into the diamonds. Using a large nuclear reaction network we establish one (out of many) neutron irradiation hostories that successfully reproduces the heavy isotopes of Xe-HL, and then evaluate what that same history would produce in every heavy element. This has become more relevant following recent measurement of anomalous Ba and Sr in those same diamond samples. Therefore we offer these calculations as a guide to the anomalies to be expected in all elements if this scenario is correct. We also discuss several other aspects of the problem, especially the established contradictions for Ba, the observed Kr pattern, the near normalcy of Xe-129 and some related astrophysical ideas. In particular we argue from p-process theory that the observed deficit of Kr-78 in correlation with Xe-(124-126) excess implicates Type II supernovae as the diamond sources.

    Description: The possibility that lunar samples have been contaminated by the proprietary lubricant paint known as Xylan, which has been applied to screw threads in dry-N sample processing cabinets at NASA JSC, is considered. From a sample analysis using sealed-tube and stepped combustion, it is argued that the unexpectedly high concentration of organic materials found in EET A79001 is not due to Xylan contamination. It is considered unlikely that previous C and N analyses of lunar samples have been affected by the introduction of Xylan.

    Description: A unified lunar control network for the moon's near side, which combines all the data collected by the Lunokhod 2 and Apollo 11, 14, 15, 16, and 17 missions, is presented. Transformations involving translation, rotation, and scale were determined that adjusted the coordinates of the points of three Apollo control networks, computed previously, to the center of mass origin and the mean earth/polar axis coordinate system defined by the lunar ranging retroreflector experiment. The transformed control network computed by the Defense Mapping Agency Aerospace Center was found to be the best fit to the Apollo ALSEP antenna coordinates and was selected as a base to transform all points in Meyer's (1979) telescopic network to the new origin and coordinate system. New coordinates of 1156 of these points are given as are 10 points from a Mariner 10 solution in the north polar region.
