    Description: The detection of an X-ray flare in the RS CVn binary Sigma Coronae Borealis with the Monitor Proportional Counter on the Einstein Observatory is described. During the 513 min of observation, an X-ray flare of 208 min duration was detected at a significance level of 26 sigma in the 1.19-10.16 keV band. The rise time of the flare is between 25 and 70 min and the decay time is greater than or equal to 34 min. The X-ray luminosity at the flare maximum is found to be 6 x 10 to the 30th erg/s and the total energy radiated in X-rays during the flare is 2 x 10 to the 34th erg. The energy spectrum in the flaring state is found to be harder (temperature T about 2.5 x 10 to the 7th K) compared to the one observed in the quiescent state (T about 6 x 10 to the 6th K). Applying the coronal loop model, the loop parameters are calculated and compared for the X-ray flares observed in the various RS CVn binaries and the sun. The significance of the differences in the observed and derived parameters of the X-ray flares is briefly discussed.

    Description: Cosmogenic radionuclides produced by near-surface, nuclear interactions of energetic solar protons (approx. 10-100 MeV) were reported in several lunar rocks and a very small meteorites. We recently documented the existence and isotopic compositions of solar-produced (SCR) Ne in two lunar rocks. Here we present the first documented evidence for SCR Ne in a meteorite, ALH77005, which was reported to contain SCR radionuclides. Examination of literature data for other shergottites suggests that they may also contain a SCR Ne component. The existence of SCR Ne in shergottites may be related to a Martian origin.

    Description: A crossed electron beam-molecular beam collision geometry is used to measure cross sections for the production of positive ions by electron impact on NH3 and CS2. Ionization cross-section data for NH3 and the values of various cross sections are presented, as well as ionization efficiency curves for CS2. Considerable differences are found between the various results on NH3. The present values are close to the data of Djuric et al. (1981). The semiempirical calculations of Hare and Meath (1987) differ considerably in the absolute values of cross sections. Discrepancies were observed in comparisons of cross sections of other fragment ions resulting from the ionization and dissociate ionization of NH3.

    Description: Damped Lyman-alpha and metal absorption lines in the spectra of quasars indicate the presence of intervening gas-rich systems at high redshift (z greater than 2). These systems have characteristic size scales, velocity dispersions, and neutral hydrogen column densities (N(H1)) similar to present day spirals and are thus thought to be their progenitors. Constraints on galaxy evolution can be derived by comparing the H1 properties of high redshift systems to the present galaxy population. Good observational statistics on high redshift absorbers specify the number of these systems along the line of sight as a function of N(H1), the column density of neutral hydrogen per absorber. Similar statistics for nearby (z = 0) galaxies of which spirals are the only gas-rich systems that provide a significant cross-section for the interception of light from quasars is derived.
