Notes: The tolerances of imperfections of superconducting bending magnets in a compact storage ring have been estimated. The storage ring, which is under construction, is a race-tracked type with combined function bending magnets. A tracking code "providence,'' which calculates a particle's orbit with a numerical integration of exact equations of motion has been used. The results of calculating dynamic apertures with modelized three-dimensional (3-D) magnetic fields show that multipole errors must be suppressed with (sextupole errors) ≤20[T/m2], (octupole errors) ≤110[T/m3], where the dynamic aperture is defined as a stable amplitude area with nominal aperture limitation in this paper. The dynamic aperture with actual magnetic fields has been also calculated. The result shows that the superconducting bending magnets have enough good field regions, and that the ring has a sufficient dynamic aperture: ||x||(approximately-equal-to)30 mm and ||y||(approximately-equal-to)50 mm.

Notes: A small synchrotron radiation source in the hard-x-ray region was conceptually designed and its injection scheme, dynamic aperture, and beam instabilities were studied. Synchrotron radiation with the critical wavelength of 0.1 nm is emitted from a pair of superconducting bending magnets. The storage ring has only one pair of quadrupole magnets to save its drift space. The decay time of the kicker magnet and the angle between the central orbit and the orbit of the injected beam were optimized by computer simulation. The reduction of the dynamic aperture due to the errors of the bending field is less than 20%. Considerations of possible instabilities showed that there is no critical instability up to the beam current of 200 mA when the beam is injected with higher energy than 650 MeV.

Notes: An 800-MeV compact storage ring is under construction for development of the technology of a compact ring and for research of x-ray lithography and material analysis. Synchrotron radiation with a critical wavelength of 0.65 nm is emitted from a pair of superconducting bending magnets. A straight section of the ring has only one quadrupole magnet to make the smaller ring. An injection efficiency with a single kicker magnet is optimized by computer simulation. The kicker field strength and an injection angle are determined. A beam tracking with a numerical integration method shows this ring has a sufficiently wide dynamic aperture of ||x||(approximately-equal-to)30 mm and ||y||(approximately-equal-to)50 mm at the center of the bending magnet, which has βxmin and βymax. A 1-GeV synchrotron is used as an injector, which has accelerated a beam up to 1 GeV.

Notes: Transfer of immunity to horse erythrocytes (HRBC) by immune lymphoid cells was performed to analyze the kinetics of adoptive immunity in the clonal ginbuna crucian carp, Carassius auratus langsdorfti. Immune lymphoid cells were intravascularly transferred to the unprimed recipients and then recipients were evaluated by measuring the antibody titre of the plasma. Antibody productivity was most successfully conferred by splenic cells, followed by pronephric and mesonephric cells, taken from immune donors 7 days post-immunization, while transferability by thymic cells was lacking or very low, even if possible. Peak response of plaque-forming cells (PFCs) was observed at 5–7 days after the first injection, and the maximum number of PFCs at peak response was almost the same in all organs examined, such as the pronephros, mesonephros, spleen and the thymus. Direct correlation between transferability and number of PFCs was not observed on individuals, although the peak of transferability corresponded to that of the PFC response. Preliminary experiments of cell transfer by separated pronephric cells showed that the lymphocyte-rich fraction was more effective than the bottom fraction containing fewer lymphocytes in transferring immune reactivity. These results suggest that cells involved in transferring immune reactivity are B lymphocytes, composed of different developmental stages and distributed differently in the different lymphoid organs.

Notes: Histocompatibility analyses in goldfish were performed using the tetraploid goldfish-crucian carp hybrid and the first generation of gynogenetic diploid (GD1) goldfish. Tetraploids were obtained by crossing clonal triploid crucian carp with goldfish. GD1 goldfish were produced by the suppression of the second meiotic division. Tetraploid scale grafts on triploid clone members evoked an acute rejection in 4–6 days, whereas the reverse transplants were accepted or rejected chronically. Reciprocal grafting between tetraploids showed subacute rejection in 10–12 days, although some fish showed chronic rejection in 20–30 days. On the other hand, scale grafts reciprocally exchanged among triploids were intact even 3 months after grafting, although some of them showed a unidirectional rejection pattern. Furthermore, allograft rejection among gynogens occurred between 5 and 20 days, whereas all the scale allografts between members of control siblings were rejected within 9 days. In addition, neither accelerated acute rejection nor acceptance of allografts was observed in grafts exchanged among GD1 goldfish. These results suggest that single doses of histocompatibility alleles are effective in eliciting acute rejection, and each of the fourth haploid set of chromosomes originating from paternal goldfish might share the same histocompatibility antigens to a large extent. This experiment also indicates that the genecentromere recombination rate is quite high with respect to the histocompatibility loci in this species.

Notes: Abstract Peptide YY (PYY) is thought to possess paracrine and endocrine functions. The highest concentrations of this peptide are in the colonic mucosa. The effect of PYY on electrolyte and water transport in the rat colon was studied in vivo. Under urethane anesthesia, rat colonic loops were perfused at a constant rate with physiological buffer solution containing phenol red as a nonabsorbable volume marker, and net movements of water, sodium, chloride and potassium in the perfused colon were determined every 10 min. Intravenous administration of PYY produced a dose-dependent increase in the net absorption of sodium chloride and water, as well as a decrease in the net secretion of potassium. PYY inhibited the reduction in net absorption of sodium chloride and water evoked by vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), but did not affect the VIP-evoked increase in net potassium secretion. These findings suggest that PYY acts as an enhancer of sodium chloride and water absorption and as an antagonist to VIP-induced secretion in the colon.

Notes: Summary Recent studies regarding developmental changes in the myocardial contractile system from fetal, newborn, and adult animals are reviewed. From the data obtained so far, we conclude that in the early fetus myocardial contraction is mainly dependent on Ca which enters via the sarcolemma. Ca release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum is minimal. The role of the sarcoplasmic reticulum as a source of contractile Ca increases and the role of Ca influx across the sarcolemma in contractile system decreases with development.

Notes: Summary During screening of animal metabolites which induce drought resistance in plants, two diketopiperazines, cyclo(L-Hyp-L-Pro) (1) and cyclo(L-Hyp-L-Leu) (2), emerged as effective. When rice seeds were pretreated with the cyclic dipeptides (1 and2) during their germination period, the resulting seedlings showed significant resistance to water-stress caused by 0.5–1.5% NaCl solution or 2.5–5.0% mannitol solution.
