Notes: Field emission from a single level surface state is modelled and numerically estimated. Field emission current from the surface state is dominant at low fields while field emission current from the conduction band is dominant at high fields due to not enough electrons being supplied for the surface state. The field emission Fowler–Nordheim plot shows no linearity. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: When starved, Bacillus subtilis undergoes asymmetric division to produce two cell types with different fates. The larger mother cell engulfs the smaller forespore, then nurtures it and, eventually, lyses to release a dormant, environmentally resistant spore. Driving these changes is a programme of transcriptional gene regulation. At the heart of the programme are σ factors, which become active at different times, some only in one cell type or the other, and each directing RNA polymerase to transcribe a different set of genes. The activity of each σ factor in the cascade is carefully regulated by multiple mechanisms. In some cases, novel proteins control both σ factor activity and morphogenesis, co-ordinating the programme of gene expression with morphological change. These bifunctional proteins, as well as other proteins involved in σ factor activation, and even precursors of σ factors themselves, are targeted to critical locations, allowing the mother cell and forespore to communicate with each other and to co-ordinate their programmes of gene expression. This signalling can result in proteolytic σ factor activation. Other mechanisms, such as an anti-σ factor and, perhaps, proteolytic degradation, prevent σ factors from becoming active in the wrong cell type. Accessory transcription factors modulate RNA polymerase activity at specific promoters. Negative feedback loops limit σ factor production and facilitate the transition from one σ factor to the next. Together, the mechanisms controlling σ factor activity ensure that genes are expressed at the proper time and level in each cell type.

Notes: Abstract This article describes the universal birefringent filter (UBF) which will be mounted at Taiwan. The UBF permits observations of solar images, vector magnetic fields and/or line-of-sight velocity fields in any Fraunhofer line in the wavelength region from 4000 Å to 7000 Å with half width from 0.05 Å to 0.14 Å. We have tested it at ten Fraunhofer lines under a spectral telescope in Huairou Station of Beijing Astronomical Observatory and obtained the passband profiles. The principles of magnetic field and velocity field measurement with the UBF are also described.

Notes: Abstract MAL63 of the MAL6 locus and its homologues at the other MAL loci encode transcription activators required for the maltose-inducible expression of the MAL structural genes. We carried out a deletion analysis of LexA-MAL63 gene fusions to localize the functional domains of the Mal63 MAL-activator protein. Our results indicate that the sequence-specific DNA-binding domain of Mal63p is contained in residues 1–100; that residues 60–283 constitute a functional core region including the transactivation domain; that residues 251–299 are required to inhibit the activation function of Mal63p; and that the rest of the C-terminal region of the protein contains a maltose-responsive domain that acts to relieve the inhibitory effect on the activation function. Abundant overproduction of Mal63p does not overcome the negative regulation of MAL gene expression in the absence of maltose, suggesting that a titratable MAL-specific repressor similar to Gal80p is not involved in the negative regulation of the MAL-activator. A model for maltose-inducible autoregulation of the MAL-activator is presented.

Notes: Abstract We consider the trilinear form of the Kaup-Broer system which gives rise to solutions in Wronskian form. The Kaup-Broer system is connected with AKNS system through a gauge transformation. The AKNS hierarchy can be understood as a generalized 1-constraint of the KP hierarchy. Imposing that constraint on Sato's equation we obtain the basic trilinear form and moreover a hierarchy of trilinear equations governing the AKNS flows. Similary, hierarchies of multilinear forms are derived in the case of generalized k-constraints.

Notes: Abstract Curved laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is manufactured from glue-coated pieces of rotary-cut veneers assembled and pressed between molds. In this study, curved LVLs were produced from two fast-growing wood species such as massion pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.) and poplar (Populus euramericana CV. I.) for use in furniture. In addition to the applicability of the two wood species used, the optimum technological conditions of curved LVL production with radiofrequency (RF) heating and the physical and mechanical properties of curved LVL were investigated. The results are as follows: (1) Curved LVL made from massion pine and fast-growing poplar shows excellent mechanical properties. These fast-growing wood species are suitable for curved LVL being used as furniture structural members. (2) The mechanical properties of curved LVL are affected by frequency, voltage, RF application time, and moisture content, with the RF application time and moisture content having more important effects on the mechanical properties than the frequency and the voltage. (3) The mechanical properties of curved LVL increase with a linear increase in the density of curved LVL.

Notes: Abstract A Cherenkov oscillator operating simultaneously at two different wave bands (3cm and 8mm) is described in this paper. Experimental results from the oscillator are reported. The measured output power is 10 MW at 3cm wave band, and 1MW at 8mm wave band. The operating modes for BWO and R-orotion are E 01 and E 13, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The preparation of TiO2 nanopowders by vapor-phase hydrolysis of TiCl4 below 600°C is studied in this paper. Influences of preparation variables, such as preparative temperature, residence time, reactant concentration, and H2O/TiCl4 mole ratio, on TiO2 particle size, morphology and chlorine contamination are investigated, followed by discussion. It shows that the hydrolysis temperature exerts greatest influences, while the residence time hardly have impact on product particles below 400°C, among the hydrolysis variables investigated. The chlorine contamination on nanopowders occurs during the preparation which can be greatly reduced by proper control on preparation variables. Unlike the high temperature gas-phase processes such as oxidation route and flame synthesis, low-temperature route shows the ready control on product powders, and thus obtains titania powders with small size, narrow size distribution and very weak agglomeration. In addition, the decreased energy consumption, retarded corrosion on the reactor and the reduced operation problems would be expected for the low temperature processes.

Notes: Summary The application of capillary zone electrophoresis to the study of interactions betweenBacillus subtilis tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase (TrpRS) and tRNATrp is described. Significant changes in peak shape of tRNATrp incubated with TrpRS indicated the occurrence of interactions between TrpRS and tRNATrp in pH 8.0 Tris-HCl buffer containing 0.1 mmol L−1 EDTA and 1 mmol L−1−5 mmol L−1 mgCl2. Addition of Mg2+ decreased the electrophoretic mobility of tRNATrp, which illustrated that conformation of tRNATrp depended on Mg2+. The dissociation constant of the TrpRS-tRNATrp complex was estimated to be 0.63 μmol L−1 at 25°C in buffer solution.
