Notes: A compact storage ring has been designed with a method that uses a numerical integration of exact equations of motion and exact three-dimensional magnetic fields measured. A beam test has shown that betatron tunes and chromaticities can be calculated within accuracies of 0.2% and 10%, respectively. An agreement of measured and calculated closed orbit errors and the good corrections have shown that an alignment of nonisomagnetic bending magnets, the manufacture of coils, and measurements of magnetic fields have been made accurately. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A compact storage ring has been developed for industrial research such as x-ray lithography and material analysis. This machine is of a racetrack type with two superconducting bending magnets and only two normal conducting quadrupole magnets. The circumference is as short as 9.2 m. One quadrupole magnet per cell contributes to making the smaller machine. The injector is a synchrotron, and a full energy injection of 600 MeV is performed. The bending magnets excite a field of 3.5 T, and are operated in a persistent current mode. A decrease in a coil current is ΔI/I〈3×10−3/year. The helium consumption is as low as 2 l/h for two magnets. An iron shield of the magnet decreases a leakage flux to a terrestrial level at a point 3 m from the magnet. A beam current of 380 mA has been stored with no beam instability in spite of there being no correction of the chromaticities. Beam emittances were obtained from measured beam sizes and were in good agreement with calculated values. The coupling coefficient εy/εx is calculated as around 0.04. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Automated knowledge acquisition is an important research issue in machine learning. Several methods of inductive learning, such as ID3 family and AQ family, have been applied to discover meaningful knowledge from large databases and their usefulness is assured in several aspects. However, since their methods are of a deterministic nature and the reliability of acquired knowledge is not evaluated statistically, these methods are ineffective when applied to domains essentially probabilistic in nature, such as medical domains. Extending concepts of rough set theory to a probabilistic domain, we introduce a new approach to knowledge acquisition, which induces probabilistic rules based on rough set theory (PRIMEROSE) and develop a program that extracts rules for an expert system from a clinical database, using this method. The results show that the derived rules almost correspond to those of the medical experts.

Notes: The central Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) of New Zealand is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism, active since 1.6 Ma. We report palaeomagnetic measurements from 59 distinct volcanic units sampled at 98 sites in the TVZ. These are mainly rhyolitic ignimbrites and lava domes, with a few basaltic, andesitic, and dacitic lavas. Most have new K/Ar or 40Ar/39 Ar ages. The remanent magnetizations are generally stable to both thermal and alternating-field demagnetization, and well-determined mean palaeodirections were obtained for all sites. Our findings suggest that the Taupo, Whakamaru, Maroa, Reporoa, Rotorua, and Okataina volcanic centres were magnetized during the Brunhes normal chron. Kapenga is an older volcanic centre, where activity commenced around 0.89 Ma and extended into the Brunhes. Mangakino volcanic centre is significantly older and was active from 1.6 to 0.95 Ma.Transitional or intermediate palaeodirections were obtained from Ahuroa ignimbrite (1.18 ± 0.02 Ma) and Mamaku ignimbrite (0.22 ± 0.01 Ma). The former almost certainly corresponds to the Cobb Mountain Event. The latter is significantly older than the Blake Event, and probably corresponds to the recently reported Pringle Falls/Summer Lake magnetic episode.Multiple sites from the Whakamaru ignimbrite have indistinguishable 40Ar/39 Ar ages (0.33 ± 0.01 Ma) and glass composition, but divergent palaeomagnetic directions. This contrast suggests that either (1) the different sites were formed during a phase of extremely violent activity, lasting up to a few hundred years, during which geomagnetic secular variation was recorded; or (2) that they were formed in a single eruption, and rotation during subsequent extensional tectonism has caused divergence of the palaeodirections. 40Ar/39Ar ages of 0.77 ± 0.03 Ma for the reversely magnetized Rahopeka ignimbrite and 0.71 ± 0.06 Ma for the overlying normally magnetized Waiotapu ignimbrite bracket and constrain the age of the Maluyama-Brunhes transition.

Notes: In a low-emittance synchrotron radiation source it is difficult to provide magnet-free long straight sections (MLSSs) a few tens of metres long because introducing MLSSs to the radiation source causes symmetry breaking and markedly reduces dynamic stability. To overcome this difficulty and realize MLSSs in such a ring, a method of building MLSSs is proposed starting from the stable lattice with high symmetry and proceeding via a transient lattice.

Notes: A low-energy positron beam is a unique probe of materials. In high-energy electron and positron storage rings it is possible to generate intense synchrotron radiation with a photon energy of 1–3 MeV by installing a high-field (8–10 T) superconducting wiggler. High-energy photons are converted to low-energy positrons by using a suitable target–moderator system. For an 8 GeV electron storage ring at a beam current of 100 mA, final yields are estimated to be about 108–1010 slow-e+ s−1 or larger depending on the moderation efficiency, with the size of the positron source 101–102 cm2. In the present work a wiggler magnetic system of 10 T is proposed. The main parameters of the superconducting wiggler are presented.

Notes: Abstract We report the temperature dependence and input optical power tolerance of an InGaAsP electroabsorption (EA) modulator module. Thermal stability of the module was found to be very high. The optimum ΔE g at 20°C has been estimated to be 48–55 meV. At ΔE g of 53 meV, the insertion loss was almost independent of the temperature, while the driving voltage was strongly dependent on the temperature. The breakdown phenomena were investigated in detail; these occurred under conditions of very high input power and/or high bias voltage. Input power for breakdown was smaller for higher bias voltage or smaller ΔE g. Allowable maximum input optical power has a large margin (〉5 dB) for the conventional input level in practical systems.

Notes: Abstract Metal–support interaction in the catalytic combustion of toluene was studied, using metal oxides with different acid–base properties as supports. The combustion activity over Pd loaded on strong acidic or basic support was lower than over Pd on weak acidic or basic metal oxides. The study of Pd surface with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and reaction order measurement showed that the affinity for oxygen changed according to the acid–base property of support. It was considered that the combustion activity of Pd was controlled by the acid–base property of support through an electronic interaction.

Notes: Abstract  The effect of short-term bark compost (Ba) and leaf litter (Li) applications on the labile soil organic matter (SOM) status was investigated. The SOM status studied in this paper includes soil microbial biomass, soil available N, hot water extractable C (HwC) and N (HwN) and soil neutral sugar-C composition. The soil microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN), soil available N, HwC and HwN increased upon application of Ba and Li. No quantitative relationship was observed between application of organic material and MBC, MBN or soil available N. A positive linear correlation was observed between MBN and HwC but not between MBN and soil available N. Among the various soil neutral sugar C, xylose C (Xyl) content in Ba plots showed a remarkable increase but mannose C (Man) did not differ among Fer (fertilizer), Ba or Li plots. Soil neutral sugar C had a positive linear correlation with soil available N, MBN and HwC. The proportion of MBN : TN is positively correlated with the Xyl/Man ratio. The increase in the proportion of MBN in SOM seems to occur with the increase of SOM derived from plant debris.
