    Description: Across the boreal forest of Canada, lynx populations undergo regular density cycles. Analysis of 21 time series from 1821 onward demonstrated structural similarity in these cycles within large regions of Canada. The observed population dynamics are consistent with a regional structure caused by climatic features, resulting in a grouping of lynx population dynamics into three types (corresponding to three climatic-based geographic regions): Pacific-maritime, Continental, and Atlantic-maritime.     Description: The enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of the major structural component of the yeast cell wall, beta(1--〉3)-D-glucan synthase (also known as 1,3-beta-glucan synthase), requires a guanosine triphosphate (GTP) binding protein for activity. The GTP binding protein was identified as Rho1p. The rho1 mutants were defective in GTP stimulation of glucan synthase, and the defect was corrected by addition of purified or recombinant Rho1p. A protein missing in purified preparations from a rho1 strain was identified as Rho1p. Rho1p also regulates protein kinase C, which controls a mitogen-activated protein kinase cascade. Experiments with a dominant positive PKC1 gene showed that the two effects of Rho1p are independent of each other.     Notes: The structure of a low-temperature GaAs layer grown by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition with precursors of triethylgallium and arsine is reported. Dense particles containing Ga clusters are found in a high resistivity GaAs film grown at 420 °C. The size and concentration of particles are about 800–1000 nm and 7×1011 cm−3, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Arc plasmas in switching devices are investigated in the presence of external and self-induced magnetic fields, as well as of gassing materials, using a three-dimensional computational model. The model development and validation for two- and three-dimensional arc columns with a self-induced magnetic field and natural-convection effects was presented in L. Z. Schlitz et al. [J. Appl. Phys. 85, 2540 (1999)]. The present paper discusses further development of the model to enable an investigation of the effects of external magnetic fields and the presence of gassing materials. Steady-state solutions with an external transverse magnetic field (0–20 mT) imposed on a wall-stabilized air arc column are presented, followed by a study of the transient response of the arc in an open-ended arc chamber in a 0.68 ms time span. Ablation from the side walls of the arc chamber made of gassing materials (and the resulting mixing of hydrogen and air) is shown to increase the arc voltage dramatically due to the increase in heat transfer around the arc body. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A three-dimensional computational model has been developed to study the effects of self-induced and external magnetic fields, as well as gassing effects, on arcs involved in switching devices. A commercial computational fluid dynamics code has been adapted and modified to model the fully coupled plasma flow, heat transfer, and electromagnetic field. In this paper, a model is developed to analyze a steady-state, two-dimensional axisymmetric air arc column at low current levels under conditions in which the effects of the self-induced magnetic field are negligible. The model is then extended to analyze a three-dimensional arc column at high current levels with the inclusion of self-induced magnetic effects. The effects of cathode size, distance from the electrode, current level, self-induced magnetic field, and natural convection on the arc plasma are investigated. Predictions from these models compare favorably with published analytical and experimental results. The influence of external transverse magnetic fields, as well as the presence of gassing materials, on a three-dimensional arc column in both steady-state and transient situations will be discussed in L. Z. Schlitz et al. [J. Appl. Phys. 85, 2547 (1999)]. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract In robot manipulators, optical incremental encoders are widely used as the transducers to monitor joint position and velocity information. With incremental encoder, positional information is determined as discrete data relative to a reference (home) position. However, velocity information can only be deduced by processing the position data. In this paper, a method of using a neural network to estimate the velocity information of robotic joint from discrete position versus time data is proposed and evaluated. The architecture of the neural net and the training methodology are presented and discussed. This approach is then applied to estimate the joint velocity of a SCARA robot while performing an electronic component assembly task. Based on computer simulations, comparison of the accuracy of the neural network estimator with two other well established velocity estimation algorithms are made. The neural net approach can maintain good performance even in the presence of measurement noises.

    Notes: Abstract The idea of perturbation compensation is incorporated in variable structure control (VSC) of robot manipulators to cancel the effects of system parametric uncertainties and external disturbances and hence alleviate control chattering. By using the dynamic response of the robot as characterized by the sliding function, a technique is proposed to deduce the system perturbation signal. For practical implementation, a perturbation estimator is introduced to approximate the system uncertainties. Estimates of the bounds on modelling errors and external disturbances are not required while signal measurement uncertainties can be accommodated. The suggested VSC law ensures that the robot control system reaches the sliding mode in finite time and with prescribed transient behaviour. Detailed computer simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this new approach.

    Notes: Abstract A computationally efficient, obstacle avoidance algorithm for redundant robots is presented in this paper. This algorithm incorporates the neural networks and pseudodistance function D p in the framework of resolved motion rate control. Thus, it is well suited for real-time implementation. Robot arm kinematic control is carried out by the Hopfield network. The connection weights of the network can be determined from the current value of Jacobian matrix at each sampling time, and joint velocity commands can be generated from the outputs of the network. The obstacle avoidance task is achieved by formulating the performance criterion as D p〉d min (d min represents the minimal distance between the redundant robot and obstacles). Its calculation is only related to some vertices which are used to model the robot and obstacles, and the computational times are nearly linear in the total number of vertices. Several simulation cases for a four-link planar manipulator are given to prove that the proposed collision-free trajectory planning scheme is efficient and practical.
