    Notes: A single 0.2 m focal length near-IR monochromator providing a 0.8-3.2 nm effective bandpass was evaluated as spectrometer for F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, S-, and P-selective atomic emission detection in capillary gas chromatography. With optimized plasma conditions and careful wavelength selection, interferences from eluting hydrocarbons were almost eliminated for all the elements studied (element-to-carbon selectivities between 1000:1 and 10000:1). For Cl and S, other heteroatoms were found not to cause cross-interferences. F-, Br-, I-, and P-selective detection, however, was complicated by this second type of non-specificity. For these atoms, elemental confirmation was carried out by analyzing the samples also for heteroatoms potentially causing interferences.

    Notes: ---Capillary gas chromatography was performed with mass spectrometric detection using a novel microplasma ion source for operation in an element-selective mode. The ion source was a 350 kHz radio frequency helium plasma, which was sustained inside the 4 cm end of a 0.32 mm i.d. fused silica capillary column, and located inside the high vacuum chamber of the quadrupole mass spectrometer. Due to the low volume of the ion source, a stable low pressure discharge was produced utilizing only the 2.25 mL min-1 of GC carrier gas (helium) for plasma support. Small amounts of oxygen (0.1-0.2% v/v) were added to the plasma gas in order to prevent carbon deposits and to enhance signal-to-noise ratios. Chlorine and bromine were selectively detected at the 5-20 pg s-1 level (S/N = 2), and both produced a response that was linear within 3 orders of magnitude.

    Notes: ---Simultaneous element-selective detection of the halogens and carbon was accomplished with capillary gas chromatography coupled with microplasma mass spectrometry. The microplasma ion source was a radio frequency plasma contained inside the last 4-5 cm of the 0.32 mm i.d. fused silica capillary column. The ion source was located inside the high vacuum housing of the MS, and only the GC carrier gas (2.3 mL min-1 of helium) was used for plasma generation. Atomic ions were detected in the positive mode. Detection limits were in the low picogram area, and the selectivity to carbon ranged from 8×102 for fluorine to higher than 104 for the other halogens. By introduction of both hydrogen and oxygen as reagent gases, peak tailing was avoided by suppression of analyte reactions with the silica walls of the ion source. Special attention was given to the fluorine-selective detection due to an interfering background species at m/z 19, assumed to be H3O+ originating from the reagent gases. The background signal was minimized by careful control of the power level.

    Notes: Capillary gas chromatography (GC) combined with on-column radio frequency plasma atomic emission detection was evaluated for the determination of polychlorinated and polybrominated biphenyls (PCBs and PBBs). Quantitation was possible utilizing a single chlorine or bromine calibration curve based on a randomly selected reference compound, because the signal per ng of halogen ranged within 17 % for 29 congeners. Combined with an internal standard to correct for potential plasma quenching from matrix components, this type of universal quantitation represented a sub-stantial simplification of current calibration procedures. In combi-nation with relatively low detection limits (1-5 pg/s of halogen), the present work suggested that GC, coupled with on-column atomic emission detection is a promising technique for the determination of halogenated micropollutants.

    Notes: A recently proposed method for the separation of fat-soluble vitamins by electrokinetic chromatography was further developed and investigated in the present study. The separation medium consisted of acetonitrile-water (80:20 v/v) and contained 80 mM tetradecylammonium bromide (TDA+); the content of acetonitrile served to maintain the hydrophobic vitamins dissolved during electrophoresis, while the TDA+ ions served as the pseudostationary phase. With the cathode placed at the outlet of the capillary, the fat-soluble vitamins were separated based on different hydrophobic interactions to the TDA+ ions and migrated in order of decreasing hydrophobicity prior to the electroosmotic flow. Migration time stability was significantly enhanced by the addition of 4 mM borate to the separation medium. The separation system was validated for the determination of vitamin E acetate in commercial tablets; quantitative results deviated by less than 3.5% from specified values, varying by less than 2.5% relative standard deviation (RSD) for within-day experiments, and by less than 6.5% RSD during between-day experiments. The separation system was compatible with injection solvents ranging in polarity from water to tetrahydrofuran, and was even capable of separating the water-soluble vitamins B1, B2, B12, and nicotinamide.

    Notes: While the hallucinogenic mushrooms Psilocybe semilanceata have previously been analyzed for the indole alkaloids psilocybin and baeocystin by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) at pH 11.5, the present work focused on the development of an alternative and complementary capillary electrophoretic method for their identification. Owing to their structural similarity and zwitterionic nature, the compounds were difficult to resolve based on different interactions with cationic or anionic micelles. However, while the attempts with micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) were unsuccessful, rapid derivatization with propyl chloroformate and reanalysis by CZE at pH 11.5 was effective to support identification of the two indole alkaloids. Psilocin was difficult to analyze by CZE at pH 11.5 owing to comigration with the electroosmotic flow. For this compound, the pH of the running buffer was reduced to 7.2 to effectively enhance the electrophoretic mobility.
