    Notes: We consider experiments by Ludviksson and Lightfoot [AIChE J. 17, 1166 (1971)] on thin liquid films driven up a vertical plate by a thermally induced surface tension gradient with a counteracting gravitational force, and revisit their theoretical analysis, which neglects the effects of curvature, for predicting the climbing rate of the front. We present a new theory for the lubrication model with curvature effects, and get rising rates that depend on the microscopic length scale at the contact line. The predictions are, in general, in better agreement with the experiment. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Small-angle scattering is a powerful tool for the investigation of micellar solutions. By applying a shear flow, increased information can be obtained. A new parallel disks shear apparatus for in situ detection of the sheared state by means of small-angle x-ray scattering is described. The steady shear rate Γ may be changed from 0.25 to 200 s−1. If needed transient shear rates Γ having the shape of stop and go, being sinusoidal or a ramp, can be applied. Typical response times of the apparatus are less than 1 s. The path length of the x rays in the shear cell can be continuously changed between 0.5 and 5 mm. The angle α between the incident x-ray beam and the shear gradient vector Γ may be varied from 0° to approximately 55°. As an example, we give a brief report of experiments performed on two sheared aqueous surfactant solutions with differently shaped (disk-like and rod-like) particles: a 30% by weight solution of tetramethylammonium perfluorononanoate in D2O and a 30 mM solution of tetraethylammonium perfluorooctanesulfonate in H2O. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Thin films of the nonlinear optical material 4′-nitrobenzylidene-3-acetamino-4-methoxy-aniline have been prepared using the organic molecular beam deposition technique. High quality homoepitaxial layers have been grown at substrate temperatures of 80 °C and moderate growth rates of 0.1–0.5 A(ring)/s. The samples have been characterized by optical polarization and interference microscopy as well as atomic force microscopy. Growth experiments on inorganic substrates, including silicon and glass, have been performed in a substrate temperature range of −190 to 100 °C and led to amorphous films at low temperatures and polycrystalline films at temperatures above 50 °C. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Complexation of Cu by 5 mg Cl−1 dissolved organic matter (DOM) from a marsh kept Cu from binding to gills of small rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss in 9-day exposures to 0.5 μM Cu in soft water. The protective effect of DOM occurs because the formation of Cu-DOM complexes reduces the amount of free Cu in the water, so the disruptive effects of Cu on ionoregulation, such as inhibited Na uptake, cannot develop. The Cu-DOM complexes themselves do not bind to the gills. Calcium (1100 μm) reduced the accumulation of Cd by trout gills in short, 2-h exposures through competition for gill binding sites but not over longer, 7-day exposures to 0–14 μM Cd. However, the protective effect of Ca against Cd toxicity persisted throughout the longer experiment, likely due to the decrease in the electrochemical gradient for diffusive loss of Ca from the fish to the water. Rainbow trout and fathead minnows Pimephales promelas accumulated Cu and Cd on their gills in a similar manner; thus, binding constants for metal-gill interactions determined for one species of fish can be generalized to other fish species. When literature binding constants determined for fathead minnows were applied to our studies with rainbow trout, computer modelling of Cu-gill and Cu-DOM interactions simulated our results well. In contrast Cd-gill and Ca-gill modelling predicted the initial competitive effect of Ca against Cd accumulation by trout gills, but did not predict the longer-term accumulation of Cd by trout gills.

    Notes: Componentware is a new paradigm in software development that is based on the concept of a software component. Software components are self-contained, immutable units of software which can be distributed over large networks or even over the Internet. The distribution of software components requires new, Internet-based search and retrieval mechanisms. A set of collaborating software components is called componentware. We discuss the architectural requirements and mechanisms of componentware, a technical realisation of a componentware architecture, and identify obstacles in building componentware. Finally, we propose possible solutions for the realisation of componentware and componentware architectures.

    Notes: Alanine aminotransferase (ALT, EC 2.6.1.2) is regulated by hypoxia in the roots of several plant species, and by light and nitrogen stress in the leaves of the C4 plant, broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum). In order to more fully characterize the regulation of ALT, we isolated a maize alt genomic clone that has high sequence homology to the coding regions of both the barley (Hordeum vulgare) and P. miliaceum alt cDNA clones. This is the first plant alt gene isolated to date. The alt gene consists of 15 exons, and has regions of the promoter that are similar to the maize Anaerobic Responsive Element, and to the maize 27-kDa zein promoter. ALT activity increased 2.1-fold in roots after 96 h of hypoxic stress, but did not increase significantly in either root or leaf tissue when the plant was subjected to anaerobic conditions. Northern analysis of hypoxic root tissue showed an 18-fold increase in a single alt mRNA band after 8 h of hypoxic stress, followed by a continual decline in mRNA levels. ALT activity and mRNA levels were also found to increase in root tissue after recovery from nitrogen stress but not after salt, cold or heat stress conditions. These interesting patterns of ALT expression in maize roots as a result of exposure to hypoxia and nitrogen stress are discussed.

    Notes: A study was conducted over a 84-day period to evaluate glycine, L-glutamic acid and L-glutamine as sources of non-essential amino acids (NEAA) in dietary ‘protein’ consisting of crystalline amino acids only. The study was performed with a total of 1200 rainbow trout fingerlings (Oncorhynchus mykiss) of 48 g mean body mass. The addition of non-essential amino acids (NEAA) to essential amino acids (EAA) evidently improved growth and feed efficiency: glutamine was superior to glycine and glycine superior to glutamic acid. However, the best results in growth were obtained by adding a mixture of all three NEAA. The improvement of trout performance by glutamine may hypothetically be traced back to a better amino acid absorption capacity by a less acidic intestinal milieu. In consequence, the optimal EAA to NEAA ratio may have to be redefined.

    Notes: Eight experimental diets were formulated for rainbow trout using agricultural byproducts as major ingredients. Each experimental diet contained varying amounts of corn grain, corn gluten meal, corn gluten feed and one of the following: 200 g kg−1 peanut meal, 200 or 400 g kg−1 soybean meal (SBM), 390 g kg−1 low-allergen soy flour, 310 g kg−1 soy protein concentrate, 300 g kg−1 low-allergen soy protein concentrate or 200 g kg−1 SBM + 110 g kg−1 blood meal. One diet contained 200 g kg−1 SBM and canola oil as the main lipid source. The remaining diets contained 95 g kg−1 menhaden oil. Fish fed a commercial trout diet exhibited significantly greater weight gain (322%), and a lower feed conversion ratio (0.89) but significantly lower protein efficiency ratio (2.18) than fish fed the experimental diets. Within the experimental diets, fish fed the 400 g kg−1 soy flour diet and the 400 g kg−1 soybean meal diet had significantly higher weight gains (276% and 268%) and protein efficiency ratios (2.58 and 2.52), and lower feed conversion ratios (1.02 and 1.03) than fish fed other experimental diets. Fillet flavour varied between treatments. Most notable was the lower fishy flavour and higher chicken flavour of fish fed the diet that contained canola oil rather than menhaden oil. Microscopic evaluation of the liver and five sections of the gastrointestinal tract failed to demonstrate any differences between treatment groups. The ingredient costs of several experimental diets were lower than the estimated cost of a standard commercial trout diet. However, the superior feed conversion ratios of fish fed the control diet resulted in lower feed costs per unit of fish produced.
