    Notes: The influence of a substitution of Mn for Fe in the Sm2(Fe,Mn)17Nx alloys on the structure and the magnetic properties was studied. Sm2(Fe,Mn)17Nx alloy powders of 32–74 μm in particle size with several values of x were successively synthesized using NH3+H2 gas. It was found that the primary phase of the powders maintained the Th2Zn17-type structure in the wide range for 0〈x〈6. On the other hand, the coercivity of the powders remarkably increased for x〉3. The Sm2(Fe0.95Mn0.05)17N5 powder proved to have a coercivity of 0.62 MA/m (7.7 kOe), without a fine grinding. Microstructural analysis by transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray analysis revealed the powder consisted of Sm2(Fe,Mn)17N3 nanocrystalline grains of 10–30 nm in diameter surrounded by Mn-enriched amorphous phase. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new mechanical grinding (MG) process in NH3 and subsequent nitriding in N2 without a crystallization treatment was developed for synthesizing Sm2Fe17Nx powders. This process features a shorter MG time compared to conventional MG to prevent amorpharization of the alloy structure and to avoid hydrogen in the ground powders which promotes a diffusion of nitrogen atoms into their particles. The Sm2Fe17Nx powder with x=3.2 prepared by grinding for 10 h and subsequent nitriding at 723 K for 6 h showed magnetic anisotropy and its magnetic properties were Ir=1.00 T, iHc=0.61 MA m−1, and (BH)max=129 kJ m−3 (16.1 MGOe). © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have examined the phase equilibrium and thermoelectric properties of Co1−xFexSb3 ternary system up to high iron context x=0.40. Traces of Sb were observed in the hot-pressed samples with x≥0.06, and FeSb2 (Fe0.73Co0.27Sb2) compound with marcasite structure was also observed in the samples with x≥0.25 by x-ray diffraction. The lattice parameter of Co1−xFexSb3 is slightly larger than that of the binary compound CoSb3. The Seebeck coefficient and the electrical resistivity are generally reduced by the substitution for Co by Fe. The thermal conductivity is also reduced by the substitution especially at high iron content region. These behaviors of the thermoelectric properties in the samples with low iron content are ascribed to the substituted Fe, while those in the samples with high iron content are ascribed to the precipitated FeSb2 (Fe0.73Co0.27Sb2) compound. For x≤0.04, the figure of merit for Co1−xFexSb3 decreases with increasing x. However, above x=0.06 the figure of merit increases with x and as a result, Co0.75Fe0.25Sb3 has a maximum value of figure of merit of 4.8×10−4 K−1 at 773 K. This value is much larger than the maximum value for CoSb3 3.2×10−4 K−1 at 482 K. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new quasiperiodic (QP) pattern with dodecagonal symmetry defined by a self-similar inflation/deflation rule is presented. The pattern consists of three kinds of base tiles, thin rhombus, regular triangle and square, and their self-similar inflation/deflation rule is shown to be derived from a regular zonogon with 12-fold symmetry. The self-similar transformation matrix for this pattern is derived and the quasiperiodicity is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract A xylanase gene, xynF1, was cloned and characterized from a shoyu koji mould Aspergillus oryzae KBN616. The xynF1 gene was found to be comprised of 1484 bp with ten introns. The deduced amino acid sequence encodes a protein consisting of 327 amino acids (35,402 Da) which is very similar to the fungal family F xylanases such as Aspergillus nidulans XlnC, Aspergillus kawachii XynA and Penicillium chrysogenum XylP. The intron/exon organization of xynF1 is very similar to that of the fungal family F xylanase genes. Plasmid pXPR64, which contains 64 copies of the xynF1 promoter region (PxynF1) in the same direction, was constructed and introduced into A. oryzae. This led to reduced expression of both xylanase and β-xylosidase genes in the transformants.

    Notes: Polarization tunability and analysis of X-rays is one of the most advancing features of third-generation synchrotron radiation sources. In order to apply such developments to the observation of magnetic effects, a diffractometer for X-ray magnetic absorption and scattering experiments was constructed on BL39XU at SPring-8. The efficiency of the apparatus is clearly demonstrated by several observations of the magnetic effects. In particular, a diamond phase plate plays an essential role in regulating both circular and linear polarization states.

For several different bone mineral measurements and various skeletal sites, we compared capability to discriminate between women in various age decades with and without spinal fracture, and attempted to identify the most effective cutoff level in discrimination of spinal fracture. The subjects were 88 women aged 50–59 years (including 32 with fracture), 95 women aged 60–69 years (including 54 with fracture), and 34 women aged 70–79 years (including 18 with fracture). Spinal trabecular and cortical bone mineral density (BMD) were measured using quantitative computed tomography (CT), and spinal, radial (ultra-distal, 10% distal and 33% distal), and calcaneal BMD were measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry. These BMD values were obtained in each subject on the same day. Three statistical techniques—Student's t-test, the logistic regression analysis, and the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis— were applied and accuracy was calculated using the various cutoff values. The capability to discriminate between women with and those without fracture using these BMD values was different among the three age groups. In women aged 50–59 and 60–69 years, all measurements showed good capabilities for discriminating women with fracture. In women aged 70–79 years, these measurements showed lower capability than in those aged 50–59 and 60–69 years, but among them, the calcaneal and ultradistal radial BMD showed relatively good capability. The 10% and 33% distal radial BMD values were not useful in the detection of the high risk women with fracture. The cutoff BMD values for discrimination of women with fracture varied according to the sites and methods of measurement. For each specific age group, the most suitable measurement methods and the appropriate skeletal sites should be considered, and the effective cutoff values to discriminate those with fracture may differ according to the measurement methods, the skeletal sites examined, and age.

    Notes: Abstract The study of background factors in individuals with high bone mineral density (BMD) may provide useful information in the prevention of osteoporosis. We investigated the relationship of reproductive factors to BMD. In 519 female volunteers (327 postmenopausal and 192 premenopausal women) ranging in age from 21 to 74 (mean 52.3 ±11.8) years, spinal BMD values were obtained using both quantitative computed tomography and dual x-ray absorptiometry. The z score was calculated from the mean BMD in each 5-year age group, and high BMD and low BMD was defined as BMD with z score 〉+1.5 and 〈-1.5, respectively. Normal BMD was defined as BMD within the range-1.0 〈z score 〈+1.0. Long reproductive period, early menarche, and late menopause were associated with high BMD. Among these, the reproductive period showed the strongest association with BMD. In postmenopausal women, early menopause had a significant relationship with low BMD, and early menarche also had some relation to high BMD. In premenopausal women, there was a significant relationship between early menarche and high BMD. The age at menarche may have a strong association with peak bone mass, as suggested by the positive correlation of early menarche with high BMD observed in this study. It is considered important to prevent risk factors that disturb the beginning of menstruation in adolescent girls.

To investigate risk factors for spinal fracture, we studied the relationship between the prevalence of asymptomatic spinal fracture and various morphological measures including spinal bone mineral density (BMD) in women. A total of 122 women ranging in age from 55 to 79 years were studied. The group consisted of 46 women aged 55–59 years (18 with fracture), 51 women aged 60–69 years (26 with fracture), and 26 women aged 70–79 years (14 with fracture). BMD of cortical and trabecular bone from L1 to L3 was measured using quantitative computed tomography (QCT). Run-length analysis was applied to evaluate the spinal trabecular textural features using CT images; the texture indices which represent the mean width of trabeculae (the T-texture) and that of intertrabecular spaces (the I-texture) were obtained. Anthropometric factors including body weight and height, psoas muscle area, and vertebral bone volume were measured using CT images. Among the various factors, trabecular BMD in women aged 55–69 years showed the highest odds ratio for the presence of fracture per standard deviation (SD) decrease in bone density. However, in women aged 70–79 years, the highest odds ratio was observed for trabecular texture index but not for trabecular BMD. The I-texture in women aged 55–59 years, the muscle area in women aged 60–69 years, and cortical BMD and muscle area in women aged 70–79 years were also considered significantly related to the risk of fracture.
