    Notes: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between molecular marker diversity and heterosis in both intra-and inter-sub-specific hybrids of rice to evaluate the feasibility of predicting hybrid performance using molecular markers. Eleven elite lines were intermated resulting in a diallel set including 10 indica × indica, 15 japonica × japonica and 30 indica × japonica crosses. The F1 hybrids and parents were evaluated for agronomic performance in a replicated field trial. The parental lines were tested for DNA polymorphisms with 113 restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) probes covering the 12 rice chromosomes. Inter-subspecific crosses showed better performance and higher heterosis than intrasubspecific hybrids. Correlations of marker heterozygosity with hybrid performance and heterosis differed considerably between the two subspecies; they were higher in crosses within japonica subspecies than within indica subspecies. Very little correlation was detected in intersubspecific crosses. It was concluded that relationships between marker heterozygosity and hybrid performance were complex owing to germplasm diversity and the complexity of the genetic basis of heterosis. The implications of the results in predicting hybrid performance using molecular markers are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract— The behavior of fatigue crack growth for low and medium carbon steels, an austenitic stainless steel and an aluminum alloy under pure Mode II loading was investigated experimentally, using cruciform specimens. The results show that under pure Mode II loading, fatigue crack propagation has three possibilities, namely, bifurcation into two branches, propagation along the original Mode II direction, and the mixture of these two situations, depending on the material. The growth rate da/dN vs. ΔKII relation for Mode II propagation is similar to a Pans type law for Mode I growth. Fractographic observations by optical microscopy and SEM were made also on all specimens tested. When a crack branched, striations parallel to the crack front which were often associated with Mode I fatigue crack growth were observed and long marks parallel to the crack propagation direction were also found for slanted fracture surfaces. When a crack propagated along the original Mode II direction, many frictional marks parallel to the crack propagation direction were observed.

    Notes: Abstract The method of independent joint control has been widely used in the position control of industrial robots. In order to improve the control performance of this type of controllers, the concept of nonlinearity-estimation and-compensation is introduced. With this extended method comparable results can be obtained as with the method of exact linearization. Especially by the treatment of unmodeled or inaccurate effects, e.g., friction, load variation or parameter inaccuracy, the presented control concept shows great advantages.

    Notes: Abstract To improve the performance of position controllers of robots, a designapproach using the method of nonlinearity estimation and compensation ispresented. The controller designed has a similar structure to that of thelinear independent joint control. Nonlinearities in the robot dynamics areestimated by a state observer based on approximate linear models of thesystem, and then compensated by an appropriate feedback. The paper presentsthe theory how to design such a controller as well as the experimentalresults verifying its performance.

    Notes: Abstract [Cd(NTO)4Cd(H2O)6]·4H2O was prepared by mixing the aqueous solution of 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one and cadmium carbonate in excess. The single crystal structure was determined by a four-circle X-ray diffractometer. The crystal is monoclinic, space group C2/c with crystal parameters of a=2.1229(3) nm, b=0.6261(8) nm, c=2.1165(3) nm, β=90.602(7)°, V=2.977(6) nm3, Z=4, Dc=2.055 g·cm−3, μ=15.45 cm−1, F(000)=1824, λ(MoKα)=0.071073 nm. The final R is 0.0282. Based on the results of thermal analysis, the thermal decomposition mechanism of [Cd(NTO)4Cd(H2O)6]·4H2O was derived. From measurements of the enthalpy of solution of [Cd(NTO)4Cd(H2O)6]·4H2O in water at 298.15 K, the standard enthalpy of formation, lattice energy, lattice enthalpy and standard enthalpy of dehydration have been determined as -(1747.8±4.8), -2394, -2414 and 313.6 kJ mol−1 respectively.

    Notes: Abstract The eight solid complexes of zinc with L-α-methionine or L-α-histidine were prepared. The thermal decomposition processes of these complexes were determined by means of TG-DTG. The results show that their decomposition processes can be divided into three steps except for the complex Zn(Met)2 the decomposition of which is completed in one step. All the final products are ZnO.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal decomposition behaviour of the complexes of rare earth metals with histidine: RE(His)(NO3)3⋅H2O (RE=La—Nd, Sm—Lu and Y; His=histidine) was investigated by means of TG-DTG techniques. The results indicated that the thermal decomposition processes of the complexes can be divided into three steps. The first step is the loss of crystal water molecules or part of the histidine molecules from the complexes. The second step is the formation of alkaline salts or mixtures of nitrates with alkaline salts after the histidine has been completely lost from the complexes. The third step is the formation of oxides or mixtures of oxides with alkaline salts. The results relating to the three steps indicate that the stabilities of the complexes increase from La to Lu.

    Notes: A series of novel structured latex particles with interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) cores and glassy SAN shells were developed in an attempt to investigate the feasibility of these polymers as both toughening and damping agents in thermoplastics. The IPN cores were composed of one impact part (polybutadiene based) and one damping part (acrylic based, with Tg around +10°C). The particle morphologies of these polymers were determined by TEM. The glass transitions and mechanical behavior of the polymers were characterized from DMS. The effect of different components on the final core/shell particle morphologies and mechanical properties was studied. The mechanical behavior of core/shell particles with IPN cores was also compared with that of separate core/shell and multilayered core/shell particles. In addition, normal core/shell synthesis (rubbery part first then the glassy part) and inverted core/shell synthesis (glassy part first then the rubbery part) were performed to provide another access for morphology control. It was found that the core/shell latex particles with poly(butyl acrylate) based copolymers are more miscible than poly(ethylhexyl methacrylate)-based copolymers. The high grafting efficiency of poly(butyl acrylate) plays an important role in governing phase miscibility. The latex particles synthesized by the inverted core/shell mode showed higher miscibility than the normal synthesized ones. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
