    Notes: We report the effect of metal-island size variation in nanoparticle-enhanced photodetectors. Nanoparticle size was controlled by varying the deposition and annealing conditions used to produce the metal-island films. Increasing the size of silver-island particles fabricated onto 165 nm thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photodetectors resulted in a dramatic increase in the observed photocurrent. A nearly factor-of-20 photocurrent enhancement was observed for light of wavelength 800 nm, a significant improvement over previously reported results. The improvement is linked to two physical effects: the increased scattering efficiency of the larger nanoparticles and a qualitative change in the resonance characteristics of the metal-island film due to radiative coupling to the SOI waveguide modes. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An ultralow noise transimpedance amplifier with a gain of 1010, a bandwidth greater than 10 kHz, and an input equivalent noise power spectral density of 1.7×10−30 A2/Hz (single sided) for frequencies less than 10 Hz and a level of 5×10−30 A2/Hz at 1 kHz is described. This level of performance is achieved with standard electronic devices, rather than batteries, powering the amplifier. Very good agreement between theoretical and experimental noise measurements is achieved due to careful measurement and modeling of the significant noise sources. It is shown that the noise level of the 1010 Ω feedback resistor increases with frequency and contributes a significant level of noise for frequencies in the kHz frequency range. The usefulness of the amplifier is demonstrated through measurement of the noise of a HgCdTe planar photovoltaic 3–5 μm mid-wavelength infrared detector cooled to 80 and 120 K. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the degree to which the resonances associated with metal island films can be used to enhance the sensitivity of very thin semiconductor photodetectors. The island films can couple incident light into the waveguide modes of the detector, resulting in increased absorption. To characterize the coupling, silver-, gold-, and copper-island layers were formed on the surface of a thin-film photodetector fabricated in the 0.16 μm thick silicon layer of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer. The copper islands gave the best result, producing more than an order of magnitude enhancement in the photocurrent for light of wavelength 800 nm. The enhancements appear to be due primarily to coupling between the metal island resonances and the waveguide modes supported by the SOI structure. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper compares experts and consumers to determine the degree to which they agree with each other on ratings of 37 sauce products, using the same sensory attributes. The paper also assesses the degree to which sensory attribute ratings correlate with objective physical measures. The ratings of experts (1-9 scale) and consumers (0–100 scale) agree quite highly, as shown by the high correlation between the two panels across the 37 products. The paper refutes the notion that consumers are incapable of validly rating the sensory aspects of products. The paper therefore presents the case for using consumers to assess the sensory characteristics of products.

    Notes: In a recent paper, Gregurick, Alexander, and Hartke [S. K. Gregurick, M. H. Alexander, and B. Hartke, J. Chem. Phys. 104, 2684 (1996)] proposed a global geometry optimization technique using a modified Genetic Algorithm approach for clusters. They refer to their technique as a deterministic/stochastic genetic algorithm (DS-GA). In this technique, the stochastic part is a traditional GA, with the manipulations being carried out on binary-coded internal coordinates (atom–atom distances). The deterministic aspect of their method is the inclusion of a coarse gradient descent calculation on each geometry. This step avoids spending a large amount of computer time searching parts of the configuration space which correspond to high-energy geometries. Their tests of the technique show it is vastly more efficient than searches without this local minimization. They report geometries for clusters of up to n=29 Ar atoms, and find that their computer time scales as O(n4.5). In this work, we have recast the genetic algorithm optimization in space-fixed Cartesian coordinates, which scale much more favorably than internal coordinates for large clusters. We introduce genetic operators suited for real (base-10) variables. We find convergence for clusters up to n=55. Furthermore, our algorithm scales as O(n3.3). It is concluded that genetic algorithm optimization in nonseparable real variables is not only viable, but numerically superior to that in internal candidates for atomic cluster calculations. Furthermore, no special choice of variable need be made for different cluster types; real Cartesian variables are readily portable, and can be used for atomic and molecular clusters with no extra effort. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper discusses the relation for soaps between sensory attributes and both liking and image attributes. A clear relation emerges between sensory attribute level and liking, but no clear relation emerges between sensory attributes and image attributes. There are two possible conclusions to be drawn from these results. One conclusion is that consumers can validly assign ratings to the image attribute of a soap, but that there is no way to trace this image rating back to sensory inputs. This conclusion suggests that more research is needed to understand the meaning of image attributes. The second conclusion is that consumers cannot validly rate the image attributes of a soap, even though they can complete the questionnaire. This second conclusion implies that consumers can validly rate some attributes (e.g., sensory, liking), but not others (e.g., image), and that it may be misleading to collect and attempt to analyze image ratings for health and beauty aids products.

    Notes: This paper investigates the combined effects of price and product quality (overall liking) on the acceptance of restaurant pizza pies. The results reveal that when a panelist evaluates both liking and purchase intent (with price attached to the purchase intent question), product quality is a significantly stronger determinant of purchase intent than is the stated item price. For instance, a 10% increase in product quality (viz., liking) has the same effect on purchase intent as a 20% reduction in item price. The results are surprising, because for other categories investigated by the same method price is a significantly greater determinant of purchase intent. In terms of predictability, 57% of the variation in purchase intent ratings is accounted for by liking, 24% of the variation is accounted for by price, and the remaining 19% is due to error.
