Notes: Examines the power of market signalling through a marketsimulation. Finds that use of marketing signals by firms within anindustry is positively related to the profitability of the industry andthe profits of the individual firms within the industry. The marginalcontribution by the addition of another signaller to the industry issignificant. However, there is a negative incentive for a firm to be theonly signaller within an industry. This "lone man out"phenomenon puts a firm at a competitive disadvantage to the other firmswithin its industry. A "temporal pattern recognitiondeficiency" also seems to exist which inhibits managers fromfinding patterns of behaviour over time.

Notes: The Shinjinrui are those Japanese who came of age during the 1970sand afterwards. They have had little or no experience with the postwartraumas their parents encountered. Quite the contrary, they haveexperienced only awareness of Japan as a rich country, success and theeasy life. For this generation, hard work, devotion of oneself to thecompany and country, and the sacrifice of the present for the future arealien concepts. They have travelled abroad and seen other lifestyles, especially American, and they want to live the good life. Thisgeneration will be the Japanese leaders of the twenty-first century. Thechanges they bring and the demographics of the Japanese society indicatea far different Japan for the twenty-first century from that whichexists today. Examines the Shinjinrui, who they are, why they are theway they are, the resulting social implications for Japan the Shinjinruiwill cause, and their effect on the country's future internationalcompetitiveness.

Notes: Within the last two decades, the Japanese economic machine has developed into the leading economy in the world on a per capita income basis and second only to the USA in GNP. Contends that Japan has virtually conquered the US consumer electronics, semiconductor, and machine tool markets and, except for quotas, would have done the same for the automotive segment. Various explanations are offered for Japan's success and some say it is because of the Japanese ability to listen to and serve their customers by delivering quality merchandise at a low price, while others point to Japanese companies' ability to innovate. Asks how truly innovative are the Japanese. In what ways do they struggle and prosper innovatively? Examines the notion of "innovation" and how it is accomplished in Japan; explores the positives and negatives of their innovative patterns; and discusses implications for the US and international competition.
