Notes: The new HiECR-3 ion source has been designed to have a mirror field and a hexapole field strong enough for both 14 and 18 GHz operation. We designed, manufactured, and operated the HiECR-3, for studying characteristics of volume and surface dependence on the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma zone. From these measurements of the ECR plasma, we examined many problems. They are the ECR plasma zone, the extraction efficiency from the plasma zone, electron injection from another ECR plasma zone, and volume and surface of the ECR plasma zone. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) at National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) is the first heavy-ion accelerator complex dedicated to cancer therapy. HIMAC is equipped with two kinds of ion sources. The PIG ion source is an indirectly heated cathode type, which is operated with a very low-duty factor. The ECR ion source has a single closed ECR zone with 10 GHz microwaves. Both sources realize good stability and reproducibility with easy operation, and satisfy the requirements for radiotherapy. They have been successfully used for clinical trials since June of 1994, and several tens of cancer patients have already been treated with 290–400 MeV/u carbon beams. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A unique growth mode of Ge on Si(110) substrates was clarified by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. A spectral redshift and an increase of the relative no-phonon intensity were found for PL from the two-dimensional Ge layer on Si(110) compared to that on Si(100). These results likely arise from nonuniformity in the Ge layer thickness owing to the step-bunched Si(110) surface and resultant exciton localization. The two-dimensional to three-dimensional growth mode changeover was observed as evidenced by emergence of broad PL from Ge islands. In contrast to Ge on Si(100) PL from the wetting layer was found to show continuous redshift with increasing Ge coverage even after Ge island formation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Microcellular systems, such as the Personal Handyphone System, need a large number of cell stations to cover service areas. Therefore, a quick and efficient means to evaluate a service area is of great importance. This paper describes a new microcell automatic propagation measuring system (MAPS) employing location recognition and cell-site identification. Service-area evaluation of microcellular systems based on field experiments in urban and suburban areas is also described. Measurement location is recognized using the Global Positioning System, an optical-fiber gyroscope, and a vehicle speed sensor. Cell-site identification is determined through cell-station ID. Computer-aided propagation-data processing using a map database is adopted for service area mapping. This enables evaluation of cell overlaps, out-of-service areas, cell shapes, interference, etc. This system greatly improves the efficiency in propagation measurement and evaluation of service area for microcellular systems.

Notes: Abstract Partially protonated alkaline mordenites showed higher activity per acid amount below 573 K than acidic zeolites for the selective reduction of NO with C3H6 in the presence of O2, which can be related to a high concentration of NO3 - species in the zeolite channels.

Notes: Abstract In the mustached bat, the central auditory system contains FM–FM (delay-tuned) neurons which are specialized for processing target-distance information carried by echo delays. Mechanisms for creating the FM–FM neurons involve delay lines, coincidence detection and amplification. A neural basis for delay lines can be a map representing response latencies. The aim of the present study is to explore whether the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus has a latency axis incorporated into iso-best frequency slabs. Responses of single or multiple neurons were recorded from the inferior colliculus of unanesthetized mustached bats with tungsten-wire electrodes, and their response latencies were measured with tone bursts at their best frequencies and best amplitudes or 65 dB SPL. In the dorsoventral electrode penetrations across the inferior colliculus, response latency systematically shortens from ˜12 to ˜4␣ms. Tonotopic representation in the inferior colliculus is somewhat complex. Iso-best frequency slabs are tilted and/or curved, but they orient more or less ventrodorsally. Nevertheless, the latency axis is evident in each iso-best frequency slab, regardless of best frequency. The inferior colliculus has the frequency-vs-latency coordinates.

Notes: Abstract A 5.7-kbp region of the Clostridium thermocellum F1 DNA was sequenced and found to contain two contiguous and highly homologous xylanase genes, xynA and xynB. The xynA gene encoding the xylanase XynA consists of 2049 bp and encodes a protein of 683 amino acids with a molecular mass of 74 511 Da, and the xynB gene encoding the xylanase XynB consists of 1371 bp and encodes a protein of 457 amino acids with a molecular mass of 49 883 Da. XynA is a modular enzyme composed of a typical N-terminal signal peptide and four domains in the following order: a family-11 xylanase domain, a family-VI cellulose-binding domain, a dockerin domain, and a NodB domain. XynB exhibited extremely high overall sequence homology with XynA (identity 96.9%), while lacking the NodB domain present in the latter. These facts suggested that the xynA and xynB genes originated from a common ancestral gene through gene duplication. XynA was purified from a recombinant Escherichia coli strain and characterized. The purified enzyme was highly active toward xylan; the specific activity on oat-spelt xylan was 689 units/mg protein. Immunological and zymogram analyses suggested that XynA and XynB are components of the C. thermocellum F1 cellulosome.

Notes: Abstract  In order to confirm the possible existence of FeGeO3 perovskite, we have performed in situ X-ray diffraction measurements of FeGeO3 clinopyroxene at pressures up to 40 GPa at room temperature. The transition of FeGeO3 clinopyroxene into orthorhombic perovskite is observed at about 33GPa. The cell parameters of FeGeO3 perovskite are a=4.93(2) Å, b=5.06(6) Å, c=6.66(3) Å and V=166(3) Å3 at 40 GPa. On release of pressure, the perovskite phase transformed into lithium niobate structure. The previously reported decomposition process of clino-pyroxene into Fe2GeO4 (spinel)+GeO2 (rutile) or FeO (wüstite) +GeO2 (rutile) was not observed. This shows that the transition of pyroxene to perovskite is kinetically accessible compared to the decomposition processes under low-temperature pressurization.
