    Description / Table of Contents: Apart from a summary of observations of Weddell seals in the Vestfold Hills in 1966, directed research on Weddell seals did not begin until the commencement of tagging of seals, particulary pups, in 1973. Other studies of the Weddell seal in the Vestfold Hills have been directed at an understanding of their diet, vocalisations, response to anaesthesia, and their genetic make-up. Variable efforts have been made in the tagging and resighting of seals over the years. The data have been unsuitable for the calculation of some population parameters but at the same time they have provided good long-term data on other aspects such as total pup numbers. These data, along with those from aerial censuses and studies of the moult, have allowed an assessment of the methodology of seal censusing to be made. This work has supported the theory that food availablitiy in different years affects numbers of seals censused during the moult, thus calling into question some inter-annual comparisons. In addition there are periods during the moult when aerial censuses are not comparable on an inter-annual basis, due to the composition of the population. This finding has direct relevance to seal monitoring undertaken for the CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program. Corrections of anomalies in the Weddell seal data base and a stricter sampling regime dating from the breeding season 1988-89 are expected to return results in the future that will be useful in studying population processes in an environment where the species is not being exploited and its population is regulated by natural factors.

    Notes: A diagnostic which combines a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and a gridded energy analyzer has been developed to measure the metal flux ionization fraction in a modified commercial dc magnetron sputtering device. The sensor is mounted on a linear motion feedthrough and embedded in a slot in the substrate plane to allow for measuring the uniformity in deposition and ionization throughout the plane of the wafer. Radio-frequency (rf) power is introduced through a coil to ionize the Al atoms. The metal flux ionization fraction at the QCM is determined by comparing the total deposition rate with and without a bias that screens out the ions, but that leaves the plasma undisturbed. By varying the voltage applied to the grids, the plasma potential is determined. At a pressure of 35 mTorr, a magnetron power of 2 kW, and a net rf power of 310±5 W, 78±5% ionization was found. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Equipment is described which provides measurements of the pressure and volume of unidirectional liquid flow through sample cores of porous solids. The real-time measurement of flow pressures enables any changes in conductivity resulting either from interactions with the flow liquid or from changes in effective stress levels to be monitored directly. The equipment can use a range of flow liquids and be adapted for miscible and immiscible displacement studies.     Notes: A 1.5 kW, 2.45 GHz microwave sustained plasma in a flowing sample of stack exhaust gas has been shown in recent Department of Energy/Environmental Protection Agency testing to be an accurate monitor of trace hazardous metals (in the ppb range) such as lead, chromium, and beryllium. Optical-ultraviolet spectroscopic studies are being carried out to better understand this particular atmospheric pressure plasma torch. An experimental device has been modified with extra visible access for radial and axial profile measurements. Diffraction limited fiber optic plasma views and high-resolution grating spectrometer instrumentation for molecular rotational and atomic excitation temperature (Trot,Texc) measurements are being used for plasma studies. Initial chord averaged measurements have been made of the N2+(0,0) first negative system for Trot and Fe I levels for Texc in nitrogen and air plasmas, respectively. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Measurements are reported for x-ray diffraction topography (XRDT) images of implantation and superstructure details in an integrated circuit device investigated with the reflection method of line modified-asymmetric crystal topography (LM-ACT). The x-ray penetration depth and the micron grain size of thin-film nuclear emulsions used to record the diffraction images are shown to limit spatial resolution in the x-ray topographs. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract . The number of predators from Heard Island foraging in shelf waters, their prey requirements, and the proportion of their diet that was commercial and non-commercial fish were estimated. The calculated annual consumption of commercial fish species varied between 36,360 and 84,166 tonnes. The non-commercial Krefftichthys anderssoni was the preferred prey for most predators, and when its occurrence in diets was low it was replaced by crustaceans and commercial fish species. The estimated annual consumption of Champsocephalus gunnari was approximately 2 and 6 times the highest and lowest estimates respectively of the biomass of this species, obtained from three fisheries research cruises. For Dissostichus eleginoides, the maximum estimate was 28% of the highest estimate of biomass. The current fishery for D. eleginoides will most likely impact on southern elephant seals, whose population decreased by 50% between the 1950s and the 1980s, possibly as a result of overfishing around Iles Kerguelen.

    Notes: Stable, semipermeable polyamide microcapsules were prepared by interfacial polymerization from a mixture of 1,6-hexanediamine and poly(allylamine) crosslinked with di-acid chlorides and were used to encapsulate baker's yeast. The size and distribution of cells within the capsules were investigated by a combination of laser confocal, electron scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. The encapsulated cells were studied as a biocatalyst for the model reduction of 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione to 2-hydroxy-1-phenyl-1-propanone in a number of organic solvents. The polymerization conditions were extensively investigated and were found to greatly influence the product yield. Microencapsulated yeast cells, prepared under optimized conditions, carried out the reduction more efficiently than free cells as well as those immobilized in alginate and κ-carrageenan beads. The developed methodology should be broadly applicable to other biotransformations of interest. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
