Notes: Abstract Many components of machines and plants are made of cast materials. Their essential advantages are a layout with a high freedom of design, and the possibility of individually choosing material properties. The finding of optimal layouts of cast components is a MultiDisciplinary Optimization (MDO-) task, as the manufacturing and operation of thermal rollers demand the treatment of heat conduction problems, metallurgical aspects, as well as mechanical considerations.
