    Notes: Materials with a large capacity to dissipate mechanical energy are of interest for passive vibration damping. We have measured the zero-field damping capacity of the giant magnetostrictive terbium–dysprosium–iron compounds by quasistatic stress–strain hysteresis loops. The magnetization and strain of the samples were measured for increasing and decreasing compressive stresses, up to 50 MPa. The zero-field, room temperature damping capacity (ΔW/W) was calculated from the stress–strain loops and is plotted against maximum stress. The damping capacity maximum for the alloy with the nominal Terfenol-D composition occurs at 4.1 MPa with the value 1.75 which corresponds to Q−1=0.28. The damping is almost independent of stress in a multi-phase sample, (Tb0.6Dy0.4)Fe1.4, which contains both Laves phase and elemental rare earth. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The temperature dependence of Young's modulus has been measured for a series of Tb1−xDyxZn pseudobinary compounds with x ranging from 0 to 1. From the sharp dips in the modulus vs temperature data, the reorientation transition temperatures have been determined, and the magnetic phase diagram deduced. Magnetization measurements taken on the same samples show less pronounced features at the corresponding temperatures. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A normally on, high-performance quantum confined Stark effect asymmetric Fabry–Pérot reflection modulator with enhanced optical bandwidth is reported. The wide optical bandwidth is achieved by utilizing the variation in refractive index in the vicinity of the heavy-hole exciton. The nominal operating wavelength is set in the region where the on-state refractive index starts to increase and allows the Fabry–Pérot resonance condition to be maintained over a wide wavelength range. An optical bandwidth of 5 nm is achieved for an operating voltage of 7 V, insertion loss 〈2.5 dB, reflectance change 〉55% and contrast ratio 〉15 dB, and 7 nm if the contrast ratio is relaxed to 〉10 dB. These values are twice as wide as previously reported for a quantum confined Stark effect modulator structure, and correspond to an operating temperature range of 25 °C compared to 10 °C for conventional structures. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Tunability in the concentration and average dimensions of self-forming semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) has been attained. Three of the approaches examined here are: variations with temperature, group V partial pressure and with substrate miscut angle. Thermally activated group III adatom mobilities result in larger diameters and lower concentrations with increasing deposition temperatures. These variations are presented for InGaAs/GaAs and AlInAs/AlGaAs, where striking differences were seen. Tunability in the InGaAs/GaAs QD concentration was also obtained in metalorganic chemical vapor deposition by varying the arsine flow. The latter gave widely varying concentrations and similar sizes. Substrate orientation was found to also be a key factor in island nucleation: Changes in vicinal orientation near (100) can be used to exploit the preferential step edge nucleation at mono and multi-atomic steps, so varying miscut angle (θm) can be used to change island densities and sizes. Anisotropies in island nucleation producing n-dot strings aligned with multiatomic step edges are observed for θm≥0.75° and up to 2°. Quantum mechanical coupling from such island strings result in non-Gaussian shapes in the inhomogeneously broadened photoluminescence peaks. The effects of some of the other morphological differences presented here on the luminescence emission from QD ground states is discussed for InGaAs/GaAs QDs. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In autumn 1993, an outbreak of gill disease occurred in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., smolts farmed in the Huon estuary in southern Tasmania, Australia. Histologically, the presumptive primary lesion appeared as focal, sometimes full thickness, gill necrosis, which showed no host reaction in the initial stages. Healing of these damaged areas gave rise to conspicuous expanded tips or clubbing of gill filaments. The term clubbing and necrosis gill (CNG) syndrome is suggested to include both these histological features. Fusion of lamellae proximally along the filament, often with vascular dilation, was also a feature of the condition. Similar lesions have been described previously in the literature, but the initial necrosis followed by the very prominent clubbing of filaments was sufficiently different from previous descriptions to warrant designation of this condition as a distinct entity.

    Notes: Amoebic gill disease (AGD) is the most serious health problem in Atlantic salmon cultured in Tasmania. Our field investigation examined prevalence of AGD during 2 years, every year for up to 7 months after transfer to sea water. The relationship between environmental factors and AGD prevalence was determined. Additionally, effects of adding levamisole to freshwater baths were investigated in a field trial. AGD was recorded on all farms, except for farm A, which did not move salmon from a brackish site to a full-salinity site during the study. The prevalence showed a bimodal distribution with the first larger peak in summer (usually in January) and the second smaller peak in autumn (between March and May). During both years the prevalence of AGD was significantly greater in January than any other month. Sampling month and the interaction between farm and month had a statistically significant effect on AGD prevalence. AGD was recorded at a minimum temperature of 10.6 °C and minimum salinity of 7.2 ppt. There was a positive relationship between the time since the freshwater bath and the prevalence of AGD for the first 30 days after the bath, with a dramatic increase in the AGD prevalence about 3 weeks after the bath. After 30 days, there was no statistically significant relationship between AGD prevalence and days since the last bath, except for the second bath. The addition of levamisole to the freshwater bath did not significantly increase the time between treatments. The relationship between diagnosis on the basis of gross signs and histological diagnosis was significant, however, the gross diagnosis was unreliable within the lower range, with 31.8% false negatives and 15.9% false positives and kappa value of 0.2742.
