Abstract In this paper we classify all surfaces of general type withK 2=2χ –2 and nontrivial torsion, proving that they are specializations of the ones with K 2=8, $$\chi = 5 $$ introduced by Du Val [7] and studied in [5]. Since the cases χ=2 and χ=4 have been respectively studied in [4] and [2], we restrict our attention to the case χ=3 , giving a detailed description of the surfaces in question and of their moduli space. One of the main tools is the use of the bicanonical map of these surfaces, which turns out to be nonbirational, and allows the description of the surfaces as double covers of known rational surfaces.
