    Notes: Abstract. Two experiments on the same site in different years compared the effects of different intensities of deep loosening on soil properties and crop yield. Both experiments included subsoiling and one experiment, with potatoes, also included double digging and a comparison of conventional and zero traffic. The site was in a moist climate area (S.E. Scotland) on an imperfectly drained Gleysol with a clay loam subsoil. Cone resistance, soil water content and potential, bulk density and crop yield were measured to assess the effects of the treatments. Subsoiling did not loosen the soil very effectively because the subsoil was wetter than the plastic limit at the time of cultivation, even though the growing season prior to subsoiling was drier than average in both years. Double digging was more effective than subsoiling. Zero traffic gave a large yield benefit, especially when combined with double digging. There was no crop response to deep loosening in the presence of conventional traffic. Deep loosening had little effect on the drainage status of the topsoil.

    Notes: Soil compaction is a concern worldwide, particularly where compactible soils are used for intensive agriculture in a wet climate. We have investigated the impact of compaction and the associated changes in soil structural qualities on crop production and environmental pollution. The overall objective was to develop soil management systems that provide suitable conditions for crop growth and minimize environmental damage. We ran large-scale field experiments studying the preservation of structural quality in arable and permanent grassland, using management systems such as the control or elimination of field traffic and the application of conservation tillage and zero tillage. We measured bulk density, shear strength, cone resistance, macroporosity, relative diffusivity, air permeability and water infiltrability to identify soil qualities that could be used for selecting suitable soil management. Along with crop yield, we measured environmental impacts, such as the emissions of nitrous oxide from the soil, which require the interaction of soil structure and water content near the soil surface. Soil structure influenced wetness, which affected trafficability, compaction and nitrogen retention. Measurement of properties that affect fluid storage and transport, such as macroporosity, provided soil quality indices that helped in recommending suitable soil management systems. Spatial variation of structure associated with wheel-track locations could be estimated rapidly using a cone penetrometer. Variation was particularly important in determining crop yield consistency. Crop productivity and soil structural qualities were preserved best when field traffic was eliminated. A reduced ground-pressure system successfully minimized compaction in grassland but was less effective in an arable rotation. Unless traffic is eliminated, good timing of operations is the most effective way to preserve soil structural quality.

    Notes: Compaction, tillage, stresses around growing roots and other soil deformation events may be predicted by the critical state model of soil mechanics, but estimating the parameters is time consuming and expensive. We develop a back analysis of the constant cell volume triaxial test, in which the critical state parameters are derived from the results of a single test. This both saves much labour and provides more information than traditional analyses, which require several triaxial compression tests and an isotropic compression test to yield the same information. The method finds, using a minimization algorithm and a quasi-analytical solution to the stress–strain equations, the simulated soil deformation (and hence the properties used in that simulation) that best fits the test data. The minimization is a form of regression analysis.For normally consolidated samples the method provides stable estimates of the slope of the critical state line (M), the slope of the virgin compression line (λ) and elastic modulus (E). The standard errors of the estimates are small in relation to the means of these parameters. The estimates appear to be more reliable than those of more commonly used estimation procedures. The slope of the rebound line (κ) is estimated, but a measure of the accuracy of the estimate cannot be calculated.

    Notes: We report a bistability in the resistance of a GaAs/AlGaAs modulation doped field effect transistor in which a layer of InAs self-organized quantum dots has been grown near the electron channel. Brief optical illumination causes a large, persistent drop in the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) resistance which can be recovered by allowing a current to flow through the Schottky gate. We demonstrate that illumination reduces the number of electrons trapped in the quantum dots, lowering their potential and thereby enhancing the 2DEG mobility. This bistability could be the basis of an optical memory or sensitive phototransistor. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We demonstrate that the conductance of a field-effect transistor (FET) gated by a layer of nanometer-sized quantum dots is sensitive to the absorption of single photons. Rather than relying upon an avalanche process, as in conventional semiconductor single-photon detectors, the gain in this device derives from the fact that the conductivity of the FET channel is very sensitive to the photoexcited charge trapped in the dots. This phenomenon may allow a type of three-terminal single-photon detector to be developed based upon FET technology. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : Effects of glycerol, xylitol, and sorbitol on selected physical properties of whey protein isolate (WPI) films were examined. Increasing glycerol or sorbitol content led to increases in moisture content, water vapor permeability, and % elongation; and decreases in tensile strength, elastic modulus, and glass transition temperatures of the films. Increasing levels of xylitol had no effect on permeability, moisture content, or glass transition temperature of the films, but decreased % elongation, tensile strength, and elastic modulus. Moisture content of the films correlated well with glass transition temperatures. Differences in measured physical properties of films with plasticizer type and concentration may be attributed to differences in the hygroscopic and crystalline properties of the plasticizers.

    Notes: Previous studies of the ESTD* isozyme locus in the Atlantic salmon show the *80 allele to be absent across the species’ European range, with the exception of northern Russia, whereas the allele is nearly fixed in North American populations. The allele was found in samples from 15 out of 18 rivers on the Kola Peninsula and White sea coast and had frequencies that ranged from 0·017 to 0·363. Typing of fish in nine of these rivers for mtDNA variation in the ND1 gene region found variation characteristic of North American salmon in three Kola Peninsula populations and is the only part of Europe where such variants have been detected. The study area was completely glaciated during the late Pleistocene period and the restriction of the European distribution of these ESTD* and mtDNA variants to this area suggests that salmon that colonized the Russian Arctic coast rivers included fish of North American origin after the Pleistocene glacier had retreated.
