    Notes: The refractive index and extinction coefficient of cubic GaN in the energy range of 1.5–3.7 eV were determined with high accuracy using combined reflectivity and spectroscopic ellipsometry studies of layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(001). A comparison of the experimental reflectivity data with theoretical calculations demonstrates that the data analysis has to be performed by taking into account both surface roughness and a nonabrupt substrate–film interface. In the transparent region the refractive index of cubic GaN was found to be slightly higher than that of the hexagonal modification. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Tracer diffusion of 95Zr and 95Nb has been measured in a set of β-Zr-Nb alloys (Zr-5.5 at. % Nb, Zr-16.3 at. % Nb, and Zr-28.1 at. % Nb) in a wide temperature range from 1035 to 1871 K. All experimental concentration profiles revealed a Gaussian-like behavior over two to three decades in logarithm of concentrations. Experimental data were analyzed in terms of the Manning's random alloy model and the partial correlation factors were calculated as functions of temperature. The partial correlation factors vary smoothly over the whole temperature range, whereas the diffusivity shows a pronounced curvature of the Arrhenius plots. A correlation was found between the degree of deviation from the Arrhenius behavior of the diffusion coefficients of both components and the lattice dynamics features of the measured phonon dispersions in their dependence on the Nb content in these alloys. The temperature dependence of the isotope effect parameter E of Zr diffusion was measured in the Zr-5.5 at.% Nb alloy. E essentially increases with temperature and the energy transfer factor ΔK deduced for the alloy was found to be somewhat larger than the corresponding values for pure β-Zr, especially at low temperatures. The whole set of experimental data leads to the conclusion that only one diffusion mechanism—the vacancy mechanism—is operating in the whole investigated temperature range. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract.  Time-resolved, in-situ-applied STM has been used to study the epitaxial growth of iron on W(1 1 0) at room temperature. By this way, sequences of STM images show directly the atomistics of the growth process on the surface. The first layer of iron on W(1 1 0) grows pseudomorphically without a preferred growth direction. Beginning with the second layer, the islands grow anisotropically with preferred growth in the [0 0 1]-direction. The generation of an ordered two-dimensional dislocation network starts at a coverage of 1.4 pseudomorphic monolayers to relax the misfit of 9.4%. A direct correlation of the creation of misfit dislocations in the second layer and the nucleation of the third-layer islands was found. Together with the onset of strain relaxation, the growth mode abruptly changes from layer-by-layer to statistical growth. A quantitative statistical analysis of the data allows to exactly determine the onset of relaxation, the vertical location of the dislocation lines, and the lateral extension of an island that is necessary to induce the formation of dislocations.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: Hypertension is often seen in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and is characterized by increased sympathetic activity, depressed baroreflex and accentuated vascular responsiveness. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the new T-selective calcium channel blocker mibefradil on invasively measured blood pressure (BP) and heart rate in hypertensive patients with OSA. Methods: The present study was a double-blind, randomized and placebo-controlled before and after trial in two parallel groups. Fifty-three men aged 23–69 years with systemic hypertension and OSA were recruited from the Outpatient Department of the Marburg University Sleep Laboratory and hospitalized for 10 days. Mibefradil (50 mg) or placebo were given orally in the morning for 8 days. The main outcome measure was the mean arterial (radial) BP monitored continuously during nocturnal sleep and during standardized daytime physical and psychological performance testing. Results: Mibefradil lowered mean arterial BP and heart rate with (SD) during the entire measurement period compared with placebo: −7.25 (9.59) vs −2.11 (8.43) mmHg (P = 0.039) and −4.83 (5.94) vs −1.34 (4.13) bpm (P = 0.022), respectively. Both effects were observed during nocturnal sleep and performance testing, including graded exercise. Adverse events did not differ compared with placebo. Conclusion: Mibefradil is an effective but well-tolerated antihypertensive that also lowers heart rate over 24 h in OSA, in conditions known to increase BP.

    Notes: Abstract  Most of the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) genes characterized in plants and algae to date have one intron very close to the 5′ end of the gene. To study the functional relevance of some of these introns for gene expression we have analysed the influence of three 5′ introns on transient gene expression of the anaerobically inducible maize GapC4 promoter in maize cells. Under aerobic conditions, reporter gene expression is increased in the presence of the first introns of the GapC4 and GapC1 genes, and the first intron of the nuclear encoded chloroplast-specific GapA1 gene. In contrast, the GapC4 intron increases anaerobic gene expression above the level obtained for the intronless construct, while anaerobic expression of constructs harboring the GapA1 and GapC1 introns was similar to the anaerobic expression level of the intronless construct. Splicing analysis revealed that the GapC4 intron is processed more efficiently under anaerobic conditions, while no change in splicing efficiency is observed for the GapC1 and the GapA1 introns when subjected to anaerobic conditions. These results suggest that an increase in splicing efficiency contributes to the anaerobic induction of the maize GapC4 gene.

    Notes: Abstract We have usedAlu polymerase chain reaction generated probes from rearranged human/rodent somatic cell hybrids for fluorescencein situ hybridization and comparative mapping of some intrachromosomal changes in the karyotypes of great apes (Pan troglodytes, P. paniscus, Gorilla gorilla Pongo pygmaeus), a gibbon (Hylobates lar), and an Old World monkey (Macaca fuscata). Probes containing chromosomes 2 and 18 fragments confirmed inversions already suggested by the banding pattern of great ape homologues. However, a chromosome 3 fragment showed complex rearrangements in the gibbon and macaque karyotype which were previously not well defined from banding. ‘Subchromosomal painting’ will allow the identification of intrachromosomal changes on the basis of DNA homology and provides a powerful method to study karyological and genomic evolution.
