    Notes: Irregularities in voiced speech are often observed as a consequence of vocal fold lesions, paralyses, and other pathological conditions. Many of these instabilities are related to the intrinsic nonlinearities in the vibrations of the vocal folds. In this paper, bifurcations in voice signals are analyzed using narrow-band spectrograms. We study sustained phonation of patients with laryngeal paralysis and data from an excised larynx experiment. These spectrograms are compared with computer simulations of an asymmetric 2-mass model of the vocal folds. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We describe an experiment that couples a high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) to a supersonic jet of radicals. A 1-mm-i.d. cylindrical SiC nozzle is resistively heated to 1500 K in order to decompose organic precursors and generate expansions of jet-cooled radicals. We have used this apparatus to pyrolyze alkyl nitrites to make alkoxy and nitric oxide radicals. The residence time of radicals in this hot nozzle is roughly 20 μs RONO→ΔRO+NO. We use the FTS to detect the IR absorption of the product NO (ν0=1876.1 cm−1) at resolutions as fine as 0.005 cm−1 FWHM. We observe the product NO from the pyrolysis of CH3CH2ONO to be rotationally cooled to roughly 50 K. The IR spectra indicate that the optical path length is about 3/4 cm and that the nitrites pyrolyze to produce approximately 1014 NO radicals cm−3 some 9 mm downstream from the nozzle. Our spectrometer is capable of detecting an absorption signal of 0.1% over a bandwidth of 100 cm−1 at 0.005 cm−1 resolution. Depending on the infrared cross section of the radical, this implies that we are able to monitor diatomic radical densities of roughly 5×1012 cm−3 (quantum state)−1. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract This article describes two experiments suitable for a first-year general chemistry laboratory program emphasising “everyday chemistry.” The first experiment is the synthesis of various inorganic pigments that have been used by artists painting in oils. The second treats such pigments as unknown samples in a semimicroanalysis scheme, allowing the goal to be a detection of forgery. Each experiment can be performed in a three-hour time period and can be conveniently tailored for a team or individual exercise.

    Notes: Abstract Many adverse impacts on the environment can be directly related to the materials dispersed to the environment during processing or use, or after use as refuse and waste. Some materials, such as toxic wastes, are a major concern because they create immediate problems with longerterm effects. Gases released by major manufacturing industries can contribute to long-term regional and global problems such as acid rain or increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The use of other materials, however, appears to be more benign or strictly localized in their impacts. If the current per capita level of material consumption in the United States was achieved worldwide, it would create major stresses on both resource adequacy and the environment. In fact, stresses have been created and will continue from this consumption style (developed countries) even if others don't achieve them.

    Notes: A systematic method to synthesize crystallization-distillation hybrid separation processes is presented. Two classes of hybrids are identified for binary mixtures. The first bypasses azeotropes and tangent pinches, while the second bypasses eutectics. Guidelines for flow-sheet selection are proposed based on an analysis of simple eutectic, constant relative volatility systems. In addition, the hybrids are compared to both extractive and adductive crystallization in order to determine the conditions under which solvent-based crystallization techniques outperform the proposed hybrid configurations. The method is extended to ternary mixture. The use of stream combination and complex distillation columns is also considered.

    Notes: A method is presented to synthesize drowning-out crystallization-based separation schemes for binary mixtures. The method tracks how the composition of each process stream changes from unit to unit on a phase diagram by assuming that the system is at equilibrium. Features of phase behavior favorable to drowning-out processes are identified. Two types of systems are highlighted. In the first, the drowning-out agent causes the solute to become sparingly soluble. Several process alternatives to separate the feed into pure components are proposed. Dominant costs of each configuration are identified. In the second, the solute is extracted into a phase rich with respect to the drowning-out agent. The extraction can be performed in a decanter, countercurrent extractor, or fractional countercurrent extractor. Guidelines are given to select an extractor type and to choose between crystallizer-extractor and extractor-crystallizer equipment trains.

    Notes: A method is presented that synthesizes fractional crystallization separation processes to obtain pure solids from conjugate salt solutions. The method, which includes a procedure to generate phase diagrams by using solubility products, explains how to calculate concentrations of all components in a system given a point on a Jänecke projection. Both multivalent ions and species that exhibit complex-ionic equilibrium are considered. For solutions from which only simple salts crystallize, three separation classes are identified. The classification is based on the composition of the feed, the characteristics of the phase diagram, and the product salts. Class I separates compatible salts, Class II incompatible salts, and Class III two compatible salts and one incompatible salt. Process paths and design equations for each class are also presented. Guidelines proposed select the separation sequence and the stream compositions based on the effects of the design variables on stream flows and on total annual cost. The method is applicable to systems in which hydrates and double salts are present. An example given shows how to obtain simple salts from these systems.

    Notes: A systematic method is presented to synthesize reactive crystallization processes. It shows how to selectively crystallize a desired solid product(s) after a reaction step and how to use compound formation to effect separation of a mixture. The method is based on the generation of phase diagrams with liquid-phase reactions. Using transformed coordinates, systems with three or fewer degrees of freedom can be conveniently analyzed, regardless of the number of components and reactions. Features of the solid-liquid phase diagram that are relevant to process synthesis are identified. The method is illustrated with systems with multiple components, complex reactions, and multiple phases.
