Notes: Three-dimensional simulations of pyrolytic laser direct writing from gas-phase precursors are presented. They are based on a fast method for the calculation of temperature distributions induced by an energy beam in deposits of arbitrary shape. Analytical approximations, fast Fourier transform, and the multigrid technique are combined in the algorithm. Temperature dependences of the absorptivities and heat conductivities of the deposit and the substrate have been taken into account. Self-consistent modeling of the growth process allows one to explain oscillations in the height and width of lines caused by the feedback between the shape of the deposit, the temperature distribution, and the growth rate. For the deposition of W from an admixture of WCl6+H2 and a-SiO2 substrates, the oscillations originate from a sharp increase in the absorptivity of the deposit with temperature. With the deposition of Si from SiH4, or C from CH4, C2H2, and C2H4, onto a-SiO2, the oscillations are related to the large ratio of height/width of the deposit and the increase in temperature on its upper surface. This increase also explains the transition from line-type to fiber-type growth. The hysteresis of this transition with respect to laser power and scanning velocity is explained as well. The same algorithm can be used in the modeling of pyrolytic etching and e-beam microprocessing when the feedback between the temperature distributions and changes in the processing geometry is important. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Single-pulse laser ablation of polyimide was investigated by using focused UV-Ar+-laser radiation (λ(approximate)302 nm, 140 ns≤τl≤50 ms) and atomic force microscopy. The results clearly demonstrate that the ablation rates do not depend on the total dose only, but depend as well on the duration of the laser pulses, τl. The experimental results can be interpreted almost quantitatively on the basis of a purely thermal model. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: 2 Cu3O7-δ films have been patterned by means of an arrangement employed in scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). Standard SNOM probes were modified to achieve high transmission for direct writing by oxygen depletion in N2 atmosphere. The written lines are about 1.5 μm wide and show a semiconductor-like resistivity behavior (δ≥0.5). The morphology of illuminated regions is about the same as that of the YBCO films.

Notes: Abstract. Ferroelectric SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) films were grown by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) at different substrate temperatures and fluences. A correlation between film structure and ferroelectric properties is established. The dielectric function ε′ of thin SBT films shows a Curie–Weiss behavior well below the peak temperature Tmax and relaxor-like behavior in the vicinity of Tmax. Domain walls have a strong influence on the dielectric and ferroelectric properties and on the polarization fatigue of SBT films below 100 °C. The formation of ferroelectric phases is favored at lower substrate temperatures by incorporating Bi2O3 template layers into the structure.

Notes: Abstract. Single-pulse excimer-laser irradiation of poly-ethylene-terephthalate (PET) with fluences around and above the ablation threshold leads to the formation of surface dendrites. The lateral size and the number density of dendrites depend on the laser wavelength and the type and pressure of the ambient atmosphere. The results are discussed on the basis of excimer-laser-induced polymer fragmentation and the redeposition of ablation products.

Notes: Abstract.  The role of non-stationary effects in nano-second ultraviolet (UV) excimer-laser ablation of organic polymers is discussed. The model includes reversible changes in absorption related to darkening and bleaching effects. Comparison of calculations and experimental data for polyimide demonstrates that the photophysical model describes the ablation kinetics quite well.

Notes: Abstract The origin of oscillations observed in laser direct writing of W lines on quartz substrates is studied on the basis of a one-dimensional model. The dependence of oscillations on laser power, scanning velocity, etc., is discussed. The predictions are compared with experimental data. The present approach can be applied also to other systems, where such oscillations have a different origin.

Notes: Abstract.  Surface topology changes in polyimide induced by single UV-laser pulses with pulse durations between 140 ns and 5 μs are investigated by means of atomic force microscopy. With increasing fluence three different regimes are found: (a) real material removal (ablation), (b) swelling of the irradiated area above the level of the untreated surface (hump formation) and (c) lowering of the irradiated area below the level of the untreated surface (dent formation). A detailed description of these topology changes is given and different formation processes are discussed.
