    Notes: The piezoresistive effect of p-type crystalline materials under uniaxial stress was analyzed by the deformation-potential theory and the valence-bands split-off model. The calculation formula of the gauge factor under the condition of the strain-induced separation of the heavy- and light-hole bands was obtained. It is found that the great difference of the effective mass between the heavy and light hole in diamond is one of the main factors which are responsible for the piezoresistive effect in the p-type diamond. The piezoresistive effect of the p-type polycrystalline material was also discussed from the Mayadas–Shatzkes model. The results showed that the piezoresistive effect of polycrystalline materials is related to both the valence-bands split off and the grain-boundary scattering. The grain-boundary scattering played a role of decreasing the piezoresistive effect, which made the polycrystalline materials have a smaller gauge factor than the crystalline materials. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Intrinsic Josephson effect devices from Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (Tl-2212) thin films were investigated. The device was produced by epitaxially growing a Tl-2212 thin film on a LaAlO3 substrate with the surface cut at a small angle to the LaAlO3(001) plane, and by patterning a microbridge in the proper direction. The I–V characteristics of the microbridges exhibit large hysteresis at low temperatures, and the temperature dependence of the critical current Ic(T) is in good agreement with the theoretical Ambegaokar–Baratoff relation for superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) junctions. The I–V curves also show multibranches for longer microbridges. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The availability of high-quality epitaxial thin films of HgBa2CaCu2O6+δ (Hg-1212) and TlBa2CaCu2O7 (Tl-1212) with high critical current densities (Jc) has made it possible to examine and compare the Jc of these species. Results reveal that the Jc of 1212 species have very similar temperature behavior at low fields, strongly suggesting that the 30 K shift in critical temperature (Tc) induced by the exchange of Hg and Tl in the 1212 structure is due largely to a change in charge carrier density and/or electronic band structure. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The control region (D-loop) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was amplified and sequenced for eight samples of the rhinogobies Rhinogobius maculafasciatus and R. giurinus from Taiwan and southern China. The control regions of both species are of 841–842 bp; the length of these sequences being the most compact among all known sequences in teleost fishes. Three conserved sequence blocks (CSB) were observed. The full D-loop and tRNA Phe gene sequences were determined and compared with other fishes. The interspecific sequence divergence between the two species is 11.3–11.7%; and the intraspecific variation in R. guirinus 0.8–1.8%. Results suggest that the control region of Rhinogobius is informative for phylogenetic reconstruction at both intraspecific and interspecific levels in this gobiid genus.

    Notes: Abstract Acceptability of clean air and air polluted by building materials was studied in climate chambers with different levels of air temperature and humidity in the ranges 18–28°C and 30-70% relative humidity (RH). The acceptability of the air quality immediately after entering a chamber and during the following 20-min whole-body exposure was assessed by 36 untrained subjects who maintained thermal neutrality by modifying their clothing. The results confirm the significant decrement of the acceptability with increasing temperature and humidity, as shown in a previous study with facial exposures. The odour intensity was found to be independent of temperature and humidity. A linear relation between acceptability and enthalpy of air was again observed by this experiment. No significant difference was observed between the immediate acceptability and the acceptability during the following 20-min exposure, i.e., no adaptation took place. Both the immediate assessment of acceptability and the assessments during the 20-min exposure were independent of the air temperature and humidity to which the subjects were exposed before entering the chamber. The results further indicate that a notable decrement of the ventilation requirement may be achieved by maintaining a moderate enthalpy of air in spaces.

    Notes: Abstract Sensory responses to clean air and air polluted by five building materials under different combinations of temperature and humidity in the ranges 18-28°C and 30-70%RH were studied in the laboratory. A specially designed test system was built and a set of experiments was designed to observe separately the impact of temperature and humidity on the perception of air quality/odour intensity, and on the emission of pollutants from the materials. This paper reports on the impact on perception. The odour intensity of air did not change significantly with temperature and humidity; however, a strong and significant impact of temperature and humidity on the perception of air quality was found. The air was perceived as less acceptable with increasing temperature and humidity. This impact decreased with an increasing level of air pollution. Significant linear correlations were found between acceptability and enthalpy of the air at all pollution levels tested, and a linear model was established to describe the dependence of perceived air quality on temperature and humidity at different pollution levels.

    Notes: Abstract The chemical and sensory emissions from five building materials (carpet, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) flooring, sealant, floor varnish and wall paint) were tested under different combinations of temperature and relative humidity in the ranges 18–28°C and 30–70% relative humidity (RH). The experiment was performed in a climate chamber where a specially designed test system was built to study emissions from the five materials. The test system could provide different temperatures and humidities of air around the materials, while the air, after being polluted by the emissions from the materials, could be reconditioned to 23°C and 50% RH for sensory assessments. The experiment was designed to separate the direct impact of temperature and humidity on perception from the impact on sensory emission. The study found little influence of temperature on the emissions from the five materials whether expressed in chemical or sensory terms. The effect of humidity was found to be significant only for the waterborne materials – floor varnish and wall paint. Compared with the direct impact of temperature and humidity on the perception of air quality, the impact of temperature and humidity on sensory emissions from the building materials has a secondary influence on perceived air quality.

    Notes: Non-linear transformation of freeform curves and surfaces is useful in computer-aided design and computer graphics. It is highly desirable that the original and transformed curves or surfaces are defined using the same representation. But freeform curves and surfaces defined by control points are invariant only under affine transformations, and not so under non-linear transformations. This paper develops a method that can perform non-linear transformations of freeform curves to specific accuracies, while retaining the same representation. It involves first applying the transformation to the control points and then modifying them so that the resulting curve and the exact transformed curve are equal at a specific number of points, which is the number of control points. Refinement to the approximation is made by increasing the number of control points. A method for measuring the maximum positional error has been implemented and this is used to facilitate an algorithm for automatic refinement. Extension of the method for surfaces is also given.

    Notes: Abstract The uterus is a rich source of eicosanoids synthesized from arachidonic acid metabolism through the cyclo-oxygenase pathway. Two isoforms of cyclo-oxygenase, constitutive (COX-I) and inducible (COX-II) enzyme, have been reported. In the present study, we have immunohistochemically mapped the distribution of both COX-I and COX-II during various physiological states of the rat uterus. Uterine tissue was collected from female rats (a) during different stages of the oestrous cycle, (b) on days 1, 4, 8 and 18 of gestation, (c) after spontaneous delivery and (d) post partum, and fixed in Bouin's fixative. After paraffin wax embedding, 5-μm-thick sections were immunohistochemically stained by the ABC technique. Observation of the stained sections under the light microscope revealed that, in non-pregnant rat uterus, both COX-I and COX-II were abundantly expressed in the endometrium, with minimal staining observed in the myometrium. Staining was more prominent in epithelial cells than in stromal cells. The intensity of staining in epithelial cells was highest at pro-oestrus and oestrus and lowest at dioestrus. In pregnant rats, although the expression of both COX-I and COX-II was localized primarily to the endometrium with very little staining in the myometrium on day 1 of gestation, both of these enzymes were also apparent in myometrial cells by day 4 of gestation. The staining intensity of endometrial and myometrial cells increased further with the progression of gestation, being maximal at the time of spontaneous delivery. During the post-partum period, however, the staining intensity for both of the enzymes in endometrium and myometrium was decreased. Thus, our studies show that the expression of cyclo-oxygenases in various uterine cells vary with the oestrous cycle and with pregnancy. Furthermore, prominent increases in the expression of cyclo-oxygenases in the myometrium during pregnancy and parturition imply that the cyclo-oxygenase system in the myometrium may play a major role in modulating uterine contractility during pregnancy and labour. © 1998 Chapman & Hall
