    Notes: Abstract  Variation at and 5S ribosomal DNA loci was assessed on 62 Erianthus Michx. clones, representing 11 species, and 15 clones from two Saccharum L. species used as a reference. Genus-specific markers for Erianthus Michx. sect. Ripidium Henrard (Old World species) were identified. Ribosomal DNA units in Erianthus sect. Ripidium exhibited an additional BamHI site compared to Saccharum, and 5S units showed length and restriction-site differences between Erianthus and Saccharum. These markers will be useful to follow introgression in SaccharumErianthus hybrids. Six ribosomal units (genes) were revealed in Erianthus sect. Ripidium, differing by restriction-site positions and/or length. These results provided new information on species relationships and evolution within the genus Erianthus. The Indonesian and Indian forms of E. arundinaceus (Retz.) Jeswiet gave different restriction patterns, which were similar to those of E. bengalense (Retz.) R. C. Bharadwaja and E. procerus (Roxb.) Raizade, respectively. The two species, E. ele-phantinus Hook.f. and E. ravennae (L.) P. Beauv., could also be differentiated at this locus. Two of the New World Erianthus species studied, E. rufipilus (Steud.) Griseb. and E. longisetosus Andersson, appeared more like Erianthus sect. Ripidium, whereas E. trinii Hack. and E. brevibardis Michx. showed patterns consistent with Miscanthus sinensis Andersson and S. spontaneum L., respectively. Finally, the comparison of rDNA restriction maps among Erianthus sect. Ripidium, Saccharum, sorghum and maize, led to unexpected conclusions concerning the relationships between the different genera and the position of Erianthus in the “Saccharum complex”.

    Notes: Abstract In recent years, hybrids with levels of resistance to sorghum midge (Stenodiplosis sorghicola Coquillett) have become available to Australian sorghum producers. These hybrids have been readily accepted to the extent that more than 80% of the sorghum growing area was planted to hybrids with some level of midge resistance by 1995. Since selection for resistance to sorghum midge is one of the primary objectives of Australian sorghum breeding programs, the relationship between resistance and genetic diversity was investigated. Genetic diversity and heterozygosity were assessed using restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis among 26 grain sorghum hybrids grown commercially in Australia. The genetic distances between each sorghum hybrid and a standard highly resistant hybrid were found to be strongly negatively correlated to hybrid midge resistance ratings (r = - 0.77, p 〈 0.001). In addition, the average heterozygosity of each hybrid was correlated with their midge resistance ratings (r = - 0.54, p 〈 0.01). The results indicate that the move to midge resistant hybrids has been associated with a narrowing of the genetic diversity and average heterozygosity of commercial sorghum hybrids. Repeated use of particular elite parent lines, linkage drag and genetic drift are likely to have contributed to this decline. This reduction in genetic diversity may have implications for the genetic vulnerability of sorghum in Australia and the rate of progress in breeding for yield.

    Notes: Abstract The location and effects of genomic regions for rust resistance in sorghum were determined. One hundred and sixty recombinant inbreds, which derived from a cross between QL39 and QL41, were used as a segregating population for genome mapping and rust resistance evaluation. Phenotypic data were collected in replicated field trials in two years. Interval mapping and non-parametric mapping identified four regions, each in a separate linkage group, associated with rust resistance. The region with the largest effect on rust resistance is on linkage group 10; it accounted for 40% of the total phenotypic variation.

    Notes: Abstract A collection of 65 Erianthus Michx. sect. Ripidium Henrard accessions (representing seven accepted species) and 14 Saccharum L. representatives (S. officinarum L. and S. spontaneum L.) were studied by RFLP analysis using 14 dispersed nuclear single-copy probes from maize. An intergeneric distance (1–F) of 0.748 was revealed between Erianthus and Saccharum. Within the Erianthus collection, the greatest distances were found between E. elephantinus Hook f. or E. ravennae (L.) P. Beauv. (the two 2n=20 species), and the rest of the Erianthus collection. The smallest distances were found amongst the E. arundinaceus (Retz.) Jeswiet clones collected in Indonesia ((1–F)=0.005). In addition, a partition based on the geographical origin and consistent with the chromosome numbers, ie E. arundinaceus from Indonesia versus E. arundinaceus and E. procerus from India, was revealed. E. bengalense was intermediate. The study of the Saccharum individuals confirmed the greater variability of S. spontaneum compared to the so called noble cane, S. officinarum. The 2n=80 S. spontaneum genotypes were shown to be closely related to S. officinarum. The implication of these results on the involvement of S. spontaneum and Erianthus sect. Ripidium in the origin of S. officinarum is discussed.

    Notes: The gas phase downstream products of an air glow discharge have been measured, using absorption and emission spectroscopies, as a function of plasma power, air flow rate, and distance from the plasma. In addition, the reaction of these products with a linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) polymer surface has been followed using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). At higher air flow rates (〉300 sccm), the primary reactive species is confirmed to be O(3P) atomic oxygen. Some O(3P) is generated in the plasma itself, but more appears to be formed in the downstream region, because of dissociation of molecules in their excited states. At low flow rates, the concentration of O(3P) is strongly depleted at the sample position, but other atomic oxygen states become more prominent. O(5S) and O(3S) are two states which are identified. XPS studies of the polyethylene surface reacted at high flow rates shows oxygen functionalities that are likely the result of an initiation by hydrogen abstraction. At low flow rates, the products suggest initiation by oxygen insertion. Thus, changes in flow rate can result in major changes to the polymer surface chemistry. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Bales of antioxidant-stabilized guayule rubber underwent significant losses in bulk viscosity when stored under ambient conditions at an Arizona processing facility. Previous work implicated the unsaturated fatty acid esters present in entrained resin as promoters of such degradation. Aging studies as functions of storage temperature and unsaturated acid ester content were carried out on both bulk rubber and rubber-resin solution (miscella) for cultivar AZ-101. The rate of thermooxidative degradation, determined as a function of Mooney viscosity, was increased by the addition of unsaturated ester. Anaerobic degradation was not affected in this way. The activation energy of chain thermolysis was found to be 116 ± 6 kJ/mol (28 ± 1 kcal/mol). At temperatures above 60°C, chain recombination successfully competed with chain scission in lower viscosity rubber. The rate of thermoox-idative degradation was substantially higher in a typical process miscella. A hindered amine antioxidant significantly reduces chain scission under these conditions. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Factor analysis (FA), the multivariate statistical technique, has been used to extract chemical bonding information from SIMS secondary ion energy distributions. The method is outlined in detail and shown to be capable of constructing quantitative profiles for the chemical states of zirconium present in ZrO2/Zr and ZrNx/Zr structures. In addition, a truncated data collection procedure wherein secondary ion intensity values are collected at a fixed number of emission energy values during the depth profile is outlined. This method, which enables data to be collected in a shorter time and from a smaller sample volume, is subsequently shown to yield reliable results, as confirmed by FA of Auger depth profiles on similar specimens.

    Notes: Three-dimensional (3D) SIMS images of secondary ion distributions in a solid volume can be produced from a stack of individual images acquired sequentially at different depths during depth profiling of the solid. While it is often possible to obtain visual correlations of large-scale features that occur in several images in the stack, the correlation of less-obvious features requires a more mathematical approach. We present here two cases where image cross-correlation spectroscopy (ICCS) can be used to clarify the presence or absence of organized structure in a 3D depth profile. In one example, the images of deuterium distribution in a zirconium oxide thin film were confirmed to exhibit order over a series of images, thereby suggesting the existence of continuous pores in the material. In a second example, the apparent clustering of gold distributions in a 3D profile of an arsenopyrite mineral was shown to be uncorrelated and likely an artefact of data collection. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The maximum entropy method (MEM) is applied to the deconvolution of x-ray photoelectron spectra. This method provides the least-biased estimate of the unbroadened spectrum by using the Shannon information content as the regularizing functional. The large-scale, non-linear optimization problem is solved using a robust variable metric sequential-quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm implemented on a personal computer (PC). The program is tested on simulated spectra and then shown to provide reliable resolution enhancement of measured spectra by unfolding a measured instrumental resolution function. Typical resolution enhancements of 50% are achievable in 〈15 min of computer time. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
