Abstract Multiscale edge detection (MSED), using wavelet transform extrema, provides a robust method to compress the information in a transient signal. We apply this to gamma-ray burst (GRB) time series. Multiscale edge detection can be used to quantify the variability, identify structures (e.g. FREDs), and suppress noise. We present preliminary results of MSED applied to BATSE 64ms discsc data.
