    Notes: The ternary neodymium-based catalyst for the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene, Nd(versatate)3/Ali-Bu2H/tert-butyl chloride, has been examined with respect to the effects of a range of alkylaluminums and alkylaluminum chlorides. Using either pre-formed or in situ catalysts, observations pertaining to catalyst activity and physical state and the characteristics of the final polymer are discussed. The catalyst activity series with the type of alkylaluminum was found to be: Aln-Pr3 ≫ Aln-Dodec3 = Aln-Oct3 = Aln-Hex3 〉 Ali-Bu2H 〉 Ali-Bu3 〉 AlEt3 ≫ AIMe3. Polybutadiene cis content was found to vary with the type of alkylaluminum used. Pre-formed catalysts using methylaluminum chlorides as chloride source were found to be the most active; AlMe2Cl chloride gave the highest activity. The activity of in situ catalysts prepared using alkylaluminum chlorides was found to be independent of alkylaluminum chloride structure. Polybutadiene prepared using catalysts based on different alkylaluminums and alkylaluminum chlorides was found to decrease in cis content with conversion. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) composed of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and aromatic/aliphatic siloxanes have been made via sequential and simultaneous polymerizations. As the percentage of aliphatic siloxane increases, flexibility and, in general, toughness of the IPNs increases and clarity is reduced. This loss in clarity is due to the mismatch of refractive indices (1.49 form PMMA vs. 1.43 for aliphatic siloxane). PMMA is quite transparent. On the other hand, in making aromatic siloxane/PMMA IPNs clarity is retained as aromatic siloxane is increased due to better matching refractive index (1.49 for PMMA and -1.49 for poly(diphenyl siloxane)). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) indicates slightly crosslinked IPNs with the THF soluble portions having number-average molecular weight, M¯n, of 105-106. NMRs of IPNs essentially show peaks for the components, PMMA and the siloxane, which make up the respective IPNs. 29Si-NMRs indicate cross-linking and grafting. Mechanical properties show increased toughness of IPNs versus PMMA as percentage of siloxane and crosslinker increases, but with a corresponding loss in tensile strength. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: We have prepared amperometric glucose sensitive electrodes with a composite active layer consisting of Nafion, glucose oxidase, and carbon-supported platinum particles. A particularly advantageous configuration results from the use of such a film on a gas diffusion electrode. We demonstrate that the gas diffusion electrode configuration enables us to supply oxygen from the back of the electrode, thus providing the capability of operating the sensor independent of dissolved oxygen. The insensitivity to solution oxygen concentration has been demonstrated by monitoring the glucose response of the electrode after extensive deoxygenation of solution. Cast composite layers yield mechanically robust coatings with high enzyme loadings, and thus high sensitivity to glucose. The electrode responds rapidly and is stable over a long period (90% activity after more than half a year) when stored in solution. We have optimized the composition of the sensitive layer with respect to Nafion to C/Pt ratio and enzyme loading.

    Notes: The DNA-binding protein HU from Bacillus stearothermophilus (HUBst) is a dimer with a molecular weight of 19.5 kDa that is capable of bending DNA. An x-ray structure has been determined previously [Tanaka et al. (1984) Nature, Vol. 310, pp. 376-381], but no structure could be established for a large part of the supposed DNA-binding β-arms. Distance geometry and restrained molecular dynamics using nmr restraints were used to generate a set of 25 structures. These structures display a backbone rms deviation (RMSD) of 0.36 Å for the well-defined region (residues 2-54 and 75-90). The structure of the core is very similar to that observed in the x-ray structure, with a pairwise RMSD of 1.06 Å. The structure of the β-hairpin arm contains a double flip-over at the prolines in the two strands of the β-arm. Heteronuclear 15N relaxation measurements indicate that the β-arm and the tip of the β-arm is flexible. This explains the disorder observed in the solution and x-ray structures of the β-arm with respect to the core of the protein. Overlayed onto itself the β-arm is better defined, with an backbone RMSD of 1.0 Å calculated for residues 54-59 and 69-74. The tip of the arm adopts a well-defined 4 : 6 β-hairpin conformation. Changes in amide 15N and 1H chemical shifts upon titrating DNA are most pronounced for the residues in the β-hairpin arm and for the residues in the second half of the third α-helix. Heteronuclear 15N relaxation data for free and complexed HUBst show that the arms become structured upon DNA binding. Together with chemically induced nuclear polarization measurements on a mutant HUBst (M69Y; V76Y) this shows that the β-hairpin arm is involved in direct DNA interaction. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The solution properties of cellulose derivatives are of interest from both technological and purely scientific aspects. At high concentrations these solutions form liquid crystalline structures. In dilute solution cellulosic chains can be described as semiflexible or wormlike with properties intermediate between random coils and rigid rods. A series of fractions of cellulose propionate have been examined by dilute solution viscometry, static and dynamic light scattering, and polarizing microscopy. Power law exponents are considerably larger than those observed for flexible chains and analysis of the intrinsic viscosity and hydrodynamic radii has yielded chain diameters and Kuhn statistical segment lengths. Corresponding aspect ratios from the hydrodynamic measurements are in good agreement with those obtained from polarizing microscopy, as analyzed in light of Flory's theory. Some aggregation and specific solvent effects have been observed, however separation of these effects has proven to be difficult. Results of these studies are compared to previous work for other cellulose derivatives. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Thin hydrophobic polymer films produced by radio frequency (rf) plasma decomposition of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) have been produced on flat metal (titanium, stainless steel, and copper/nickel) and silicon substrates. By using a statistical design methodology, the deposition conditions have been assessed for their control of the deposition rate, refractive index, water droplet contact angle, and longevity of dropwise condensation of steam. The films showing the best performance were those deposited at the slower rates, using low rf power density and high monomer flow rates, and having the lower refractive indices. There is some dependence on substrate material, with CuNi behaving worst, and titanium providing the best results of the three metals studied. This may be connected with the stability of an interfacial oxide layer. The steam immersion tests have already exceeded 7500 hours of continuous condensation, and many of the films are still producing excellent dropwise condensation. The reasons for these effects of preparation conditions and substrate material on performance are discussed with reference to the plasma chemical process.

    Notes: Propoxylation of lactitol [4-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-D-glucitol] under alkaline conditions afforded poly(ether polyol)s (PEP) which have been characterized by their unsaturation content, alpha color, hydroxyl number, viscosity, hygroscopicity, and molecular weight distribution. The analogous sucrose-based PEP were prepared for comparison. Lactitol was found to require shorter reaction times and produced lighter-colored polyols than did sucrose. Polyols produced from lactitol displayed similar physical properties to sucrose-based PEP. Molecular weight analysis by GPC using the universal calibration method showed lactitol PEP to have polydispersities between 1.04 and 1.07. Negligible decomposition of lactitol during propoxylation was confirmed by 13C-NMR and GPC. 1H-NMR of trifluoroacetyl derivatives of lactitol PEP afforded secondary determination of Mn. In addition, rigid polyurethane foams (PURF) formulated with lactitol-, sucrose-, or commercial sucrose-glycerin-based polyols and PAPI 27 were prepared and characterized. Lactitol-based PURF were found to compare favorably with sucrose-based foams, displaying a density and compressive strength of 28.9 kg/m3 and 1.213 × 105 N/M2, respectively. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
