Notes: Abstract  In order to dissect the complex genetic system that controls pollen development, we have undertaken a program of transposon insertion mutagenesis, with the purpose of producing mutations in gametophytically acting genes that are important for this process. The present work reports the developmental cytology of one of the mutants isolated, gaMS-2 (gametophytic male sterile-2). A peculiar feature of the mutant grains was lack of differentiation between the vegetative and the generative nuclei, leading to alteration in number, conformation and placement of nuclei. At anthesis, the grains carrying the mutant allele are about 40% of the normal grain size, contain a very reduced amount of starch and exhibit various nuclear abnormalities.

Notes: The regiospecific synthesis of 3,4-disubstituted furans and thiophenes is reviewed. Our initial approach used 3,4-bis(tri-n-butylstannyl)furan as a building block, which led to many structurally diverse 3,4-disubstituted furans. Another avenue was explored by using 3,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)furan and 3,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)thiophene as precursors. A variety of unsymmetrically 3,4-disubstituted furans and thiophenes were prepared in this way. The advantages of our strategy lie in its stepwise manner as well as its prospect of yielding 3,4-disubstituted furans and thiophenes with rather different substitution pattern.

Description: A cladistic study was carried out on known species of the characteristically Antarctic genus Oswaldella, adopting as outgroups some other genera included in the family Kirchenpaueriidae. The analysis resulted in a cladogram with low CI in which no relationship between genera can be depicted. However, the hypothesis of monophyly of the genus Oswaldella is corroborated, being supported in our cladogram by five synapomorphies (although all are homoplastic with other taxa or reversed within the species of the genus). The basal relationships of the genus are uncertain, but three species groups are distinguishable within Oswaldella: 1) the O. incognita group, 2) the O. antarctica group, and 3) a clade formed by (O. garciacarrascosai, O. elongata ( O. blanconae (O. gracilis O. herwigi, Oswaldella sp. two)))).
