    Notes: New classes of copolymers, poly[oxy(chloromethyl)ethylene]/poly[oxy-((alkylthio)methyl)ethylene] copolymers (CE-ATEs), poly[oxy((alkylthio)methyl)-ethylene]s (ATEs), poly[oxy(chloromethyl)ethylene]/poly[oxy((alkylsulfonyl)meth-yl)ethylene] copolymers (CE-ASEs), and poly[oxy((alkylsulfonyl)methyl)ethylene]s (ASEs) have been made for the first time. The thioether-containing polymers (CE-ATEs and ATEs) were synthesized by reacting poly[oxy(chloromethyl)ethylene] (CE, poly(epichlorohydrin)) with different amounts of sodium alkanethiolates. The sulfone-containing polymers (CE-ASEs and ASEs) were synthesized by oxidizing the CE-ATEs and ATEs using m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid. The Fox equation, a linear relationship, fit the Tg/composition data for most CE-ATEs. The Tg's of the CE-ASEs showed positive deviations from those calculated using the Fox equation. The Johnston equation, in which steric and/or polar interactions between dissimilar monomeric units are considered by using TgAB (the Tg of the AB or BA dyad), fit the Tg/composition data for all copolymers in this study. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Pure 1,2-addition polymers, poly(2-methylene-1,3-dioxolane), 1b, poly(2-methylene-1,3-dioxane), 2b, and poly(2-methylene-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane), 3b, were prepared using the cationic initiators H2SO4, TiCl4, BF3, and also Ru(PPh3)3Cl2. Small ester carbonyl bands in the IR spectra of 1b and 2b were observed when the polymerizations were performed at 80°C (1b) and both 67 and 138°C (2b) using Ru(PPh3)3Cl2. The poly(cyclic ketene acetals) were stable if they were not exposed to acid and water. They were quite thermally stable and did not decompose until 290°C (1b), 240°C (2b), and 294°C (3b). Different chemical shifts for axial and equatorial H and CH3 on the ketal rings were found in the 1H NMR spectrum of 3b at room temperature. High molecular weight 3b (M̄n = 8.68 × 104, M̄w = 1.31 × 105, M̄z = 1.57 × 105) was obtained upon cationic initiation by H2SO4. Poly(2-methylene-1,3-dioxane), 2b, underwent partial hydrolysis when Ru(PPh3)3Cl2 and water were present in the polymer. The hydrolyzed products were 1,3-propanediol and a polymer containing both poly(2-methylene-1,3-dioxane) and polyketene units. The percentages of these two units in the hydrolyzed polymer were about 32% polyketene and 68% poly(2-methylene-1,3-dioxane). No crosslinked or aromatic structures were observed in the hydrolyzed products. The molecular weight of hydrolyzed polymer was M̄n = 5740, M̄w = 7260, and M̄z = 9060. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Poly[oxy(ethylthiomethyl)ethylene] (ETE) was prepared from poly[oxy (chloromethyl)ethylene] (CE) by reaction with sodium ethanethiolate. Sulfoxide and sulfone analogues were synthesized by oxidation of the poly[oxy(ethylthiomethyl)ethylene]. By changing the chloromethyl/sodium ethanethiolate ratio, poly[oxy (chloromethyl)ethylene-co-oxy(ethylthiomethyl)ethylene] (CE-ETEs) were easily made. Poly[oxy(ethylsulfinylmethyl)ethylene] (ESXE), poly[oxy(chloromethyl)ethylene-co-oxy(ethylsulfinylmethyl)ethylene] (CE-ESXEs), poly[oxy(ethylsulfonylmethyl)ethylene] (ESE), and poly[oxy(chloromethyl)ethylene-co-oxy(ethylsulfonylmethyl)ethylene] (CE-ESEs) were obtained by oxidation of ETE or CE-ETEs. There was little if any chain degradation. The (co)polymer structures were confirmed by FTIR and 1H-NMR spectroscopic studies. Their thermal properties were studied by DSC and TGA. Tgs of ETE, ESXE, and ESE were -57, 36, and 57°C, respectively, and Td,os (initial decomposition temperature, TGA) were 331, 198, and 308°C, respectively. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Calmidazolium {R24571, 1-[bis(4-chlorophenyl)methyl]-3-[2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-2-[(2,4-dichlorophenyl)methoxy]ethyl]-1H-imidazolium chloride} is a potent calmodulin inhibitor. This paper describes the synthesis and properties of the enantiomers of calmidazolium from the enantiomers of miconazole {1(N)-(2-(2,4-dichlorobenzyloxy)-2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl))-ethyl imidazole}, prepared from the racemate by chiral preparative scale high performance liquid chromatography. Overlap between ligand and protein resonances in the aromatic region of the 1H NMR spectrum of the calmidazolium-calmodulin complexes has been obviated by preparation of the protein with all of its nine phenylalanine rings deuterated (Phe-d5 calmodulin). This has been accomplished by the overexpression of calmodulin derived from Trypanosoma brucei rhodiesiense in E. coli in a medium supplemented with ring-deuterated phenylalanine. The kinetics of binding of each enantiomer are slow on the 1H NMR time scale as judged by the behaviour of the H2 resonance of Histidine-107, which is clearly visible under the sample conditions used. The aromatic spectral regions of the protein-bound (+) and (-) enantiomers contrast strikingly, reflecting differences in bound environment and/or conformation.     Notes: Tri-O-benzyl cellulose, tri-O-p-fluorobenzyl cellulose, and a corresponding series of cellulose mixed benzyl ethers were synthesized and blended with poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL). Mechanical and thermal analyses indicated that none of the cellulose benzyl ethers of the cellulose mixed benzyl ethers was miscible with PCL. However, there was evidence of a limited degree of compatibility that exhibited a dependence on the substituent ratio, or copolymer composition, of the cellulose mixed benzyl ethers. The weak interactions in these blends were found to be nonspecific, and thus the limited compatibility is thought to arise from intramolecular interactions within the cellulose mixed benzyl ethers. The treatment of cellulose mixed derivatives as copolymers and the potential use of intramolecular effects in cellulose derivative blending is discussed. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A 99% 15N-labeled polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI) resin was used to make a series of wood/15N-pMDI composites at various wood precure moisture contents. Cure chemistry and bondline morphology was monitored using 15N CP/MAS (15N cross-polarization, magic-angle spinning) NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance). Biuret-type structures were identified as the predominant chemical moieties when dry wood flakes were bonded together, while urea linkages were predominant at higher precure moisture. Urea and urethane signal overlap make the unambiguous identification of urethane difficult. Relaxation studies using variable contact times were complicated by excessively long cross-polarization rates for nonprotonated nitrogens. Experiments using variable spin lock periods prior to a fixed contact time indicate that the cured resin in these composites is homogeneous. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The water-soluble solids comprised of the ionic complex between chitosan and acetic acid, chitosonium acetate, are converted into chitin by heating. The thermally-induced conversion of a water-soluble chitosonium acetate in film form into a water-insoluble chitin film was examined by thermal analysis (DMTA, TGA, DSC, and TMA) and by solid state 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Results indicate that tan δ-transitions occur at increasingly high temperatures, and over progressively wider temperature ranges, as the transformation progresses. Likewise, the storage modulus, log E′, increases as the chitosonium acetate film undergoes “cure” and converts to chitin. Cure kinetic parameters are obtained using the model proposed by Provder et al. modified for glass transition temperature (Tg). The results suggest the existence of two sequential first order reactions, an initial and a late cure reaction, having activation energies of approximately 15 and 21 kcal/mol, respectively. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Solvent selection for extractive fermentation for propionic acid was conducted with three systems: Alamine 304-1 (trilaurylamine) in 2-octanol, 1-dodecanol, and Witcohol 85 NF (oleyl alcohol). Among them, the solvent containing 2-octanol exhibited the highest partition coefficient in acid extraction, but it was also toxic to propionibacteria. The most solvent-resistant strain among five strains of the microorganism was selected. Solvent toxicity was eliminated via two strategies: entrapment of dissolved toxic solvent in the culture growth medium with vegetable oils such as corn, olive, or soybean oils; or replacement of the toxic 2-octanol with nontoxic Witcohol 85 NF. The complete recovery of acids from the Alamine 304-1/Witcohol 85 NF was also realized with vacuum distillation. ©1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Biotechnol Bioeng 57: 454-461, 1998.

    Notes: The reaction of 5-hexenyl iodides with diethylzinc (2 equiv) and catalytic amounts of a PdII or NiII complex like PdCl2(dppf), PdCl2(MeCN)2, or Ni(acac)2 results in an efficient ring closure (THF, RT, 2-12 h) affording cyclopentylmethylzinc iodides, which, after transmetalation with CuCN·2LiCl, can be further functionalized by treatment with a range of electrophiles like allylic halides, acyl chlorides, enones, nitroolefins, ethyl propynoate, and alkynyl halides to yield polyfunctional cyclopentane derivatives. The ring closures occur via radical intermediates, and the stereochemistry of the products can be explained according to the rules for radical cyclizations developed by Beckwith. The preparation of several di- and trisubstituted cyclopentanes has been achieved with high stereoselectivity. Tandem ring closures can be performed to construct bicyclic or tricyclic ring systems. Cyclizations of iodo-ethylenic and acetylenic esters and ketones can be accomplished, although the high reactivity of acetylenic ketones leads to unexpected cyclization products. The synthetic utility of this method has been demonstrated by an enantioselective synthesis of (+)-methyl epijasmonate and (-)-methyl cucurbate.

    Notes: Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells were attached to tiny adhesive sites in poly-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(polyHEMA-) coated glass, and their divison properties were examined. The adhesive sites were produced by placing a metal mask, containing 8-μm-diameter holes arranged in a regular pattern, on top of the coated glass and exposing the sandwich to glow discharge treatment. This treatment produced an ordered array of circular cavities in the polyHEMA down to the glass. These adhesive sites were smaller in diameter than a newborn CHO cell, so that, upon division, there would theoretically be room for only one of the two new daughter cells to remain attached. It was found that individual CHO cells attached to, and grew upon, the sites, and that division normally resulted in the releas of one of the two new daughters. It is concluded that this culture technique has applications in research on the mammalian cell cycle, cell partitioning, and cellular senescence. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
