    Notes: Early in the development of electrohydrodynamic mass spectrometry (EH-MS), it was realized that ion source performance improved when the sample liquid was supplied discontinuously to the capillary emitter. Based on this realization, an ion source was designed that operates without an external sample supply system. Its essential part is a metal capillary that serves both as the liquid reservoir and the field anode and is mounted exchangeably on a pushrod. As the liquid flow is field induced, the flow rates are extremely low, in the range of 0.2 nl min-1. Thus, in spite of high analyte concentrations needed, sample consumption is only a few picomoles per mass scan. Moreover, the emission of larger droplets is avoided, which contributes to the stability of the ion signal. As the capillary emitter is mounted on a standard emitter carrier known from field desorption (FD) MS, the new ion source is compatible with conventional FD ion sources. EH mass spectra of analytes could be obtained from substances whose solubility in glycerol was〉0.5 mol l-1. The substances investigated with the new ion source include sugars, amino acids, peptides and an antibiotic. The general characteristics of the mass spectra are essentially the same as those known from other EH ion sources. Besides abundant solvent cluster ions, only cationated or protonated molecules of the analytes could be detected, frequently with one or more solvent molecules attached to the ions. Fragment ions were not observed.

    Notes: Collision with neutral molecules is shown to provide a convenient method of adding internal energy to ions in a field-free drift region of the mass spectrometer. The effects on this process of ion accelerating potential, target gas pressure and identity, and precursor ion internal energy and mass have been investigated to optimize experimental conditions. Such collisions cause ion decompositions whose activation energies cover a broad range; for a particular ion such decompositions can be viewed as its “collisional activation (CA) spectrum.” CA spectra, which can be obtained for each ion in the normal mass spectrum, and which appear to follow the predictions of the quasi equilibrium theory, show many more of the possible unimolecular ion decomposition reactions for an ion than do unimolecular metastables, and thus provide valuable information for ion reaction mechanisms and molecular structure determination. Collisional activation can sometimes yield ion energies which are relatively inaccessible by electron impact. The precursor ion internal energy has a negligible effect on the ion's CA spectrum except for product ions formed through the processes of lowest activation energy. Thus, CA spectra should also be valuable for the characterization of ion structures.

    Notes: This work addresses finite element (FE) modelling of creep cracks under reversed and cyclic loads in steels. A constitutive model based on the creep hardening surface developed by Murakami and Ohno has been selected for this purpose. This model is particularly accurate for describing creep under reversed and cyclic loads and requires no additional material constants. An FE algorithm for this model has been derived and implemented into a research code FVP. The algorithm is verified by comparing the numerical predictions with closed form solutions for simple geometries and loading configurations. FE predictions are compared with experimental data for a stationary crack in a compact tension specimen. The stress and strain fields in the vicinity of a crack under a sustained load are compared with those for the intermediate unloading case. Several integral fracture parameters are investigated as to their appropriateness for describing creep cracks under reversed and cyclic loads.

    Notes: An alternative algorithm for finding exact natural frequencies or buckling loads from the transcendental, e.g. dynamic, stiffness matrix method is presented in this paper and evaluated by using the plate assembly testbed program VICONOPT. The method is based on the bounding properties of the eigenvalues provided by either linear or quadratic matrix pencils on the exact solutions of the transcendental eigenvalue problem. The procedure presented has five stages, including two accuracy checking stages which prevent unnecessary calculations. Numerical tests on buckling of general anisotropic plate assemblies show that significant time savings can be achieved compared with an earlier multiple determinant parabolic interpolation method.

    Notes: High-purity copper samples were irradiated with high-energy protons and neutrons. The concentration of transmutational elements was measured by means of the total reflection x-ray fluorescence method using synchrotron radiation. The spectra of non-irradiated samples were substracted from the spectra of the irradiated samples. By this evaluation method, the minimum detectable concentration was as low as 1.5 μg g-1 in a copper matrix.

    Notes: A higher-order compact scheme that is O(h4) on the nine-point 2-D stencil is formulated for the steady stream-function vorticity form of the Navier-Stokes equations. The resulting stencil expressions are presented and hence this new scheme can be easily incorporated into existing industrial software. We also show that special treatment of the wall boundary conditions is required. The method is tested on representative model problems and compares very favourably with other schemes in the literature.

    Notes: Explanation for the widely reported observation that fully grouted reinforcement is more effective in hard rock that behaves as a discontinuum than in soft rock is presented. Analytical solutions are presented for the distribution of displacement and load along an untensioned fully grouted elastic bolt, of specified bond stiffness, which is activated during excavation by either a continuous or discontinuous distribution of rock displacement. The results indicate that significantly higher axial loads are developed for the discontinuous case.Since the mechanics of bond failure depend on the type of bolt and grout used, in the second part of the paper a finite difference formulation is introduced and combined with a non-linear model for the bond behaviour of a cement grouted seven-wire strand cable bolt. The results of a parametric study indicate that, because the bond is frictional and depends on confinement at the borehole wall, for the same profile of rock mass displacement lower loads are developed in soft rock. Furthermore, in soft rock, excavation induced stress changes can cause a dramatic reduction in bond strength, so that, even after significant rock mass displacement, the axial load developed is significantly less than the tensile strength of the cable. A combination of these effects can explain why failures of cable bolted ground involve debonding at the cable-grout interface in soft rock, and why instances of cable rupture are confined to hard, blocky rock masses.

    Notes: In this paper, the stress states of a sand particle (or aggregate) with an interface layer in a cement paste (or mortar) subjected to uniaxial compression or tension are studied. This is a dual layer inclusion problem. The general analytical solutions of stresses and deformations are obtained in closed form, and the solutions of several special cases including the sand (or aggregate) treated as rigid body and as a hole as well as when the thickness of the interface layer approaches zero are also given.

    Notes: In this paper, the influence of geometrical and physical parameters (size of the sand particle, thickness of the interface layer and ratios of the modulus of elasticity) on stress distributions in a mortar is studied. It is found that a weak or soft interface layer in the mortar will greatly reduce the strength of the concrete; if the modulus of the interface layer approaches to that of the cement paste and the modulus of the sand particle (or aggregate) is 4-10 times as large as that of the cement paste, the concrete will possess a much higher strength and thus has a better property.

    Notes: Raman trace scattering intensities are reported for the d0, d3, d6, d8 and d9 deuterated species of trimethylamine. Using normal coordinates from a previous scaled ab initio force field, the data are analysed in terms of seven derivatives ∂α¯∂S in the A1 symmetry species, each of which is well defined. Similar derivatives (dα¯/dr)CH with respect to the stretching of the two kinds of CH bond are shown to be very different from each other, showing a marked effect of the lone pair. Infrared intensities were measured for the d0, d8 and d9 species. These are well reproduced by ab initio calculations at the MP2/6-31G* level. The dipole derivative for the CHS bond trans to the lone pair is much greater than that for the Ha bond in the gauche position. The ab initio atomic polar tensors were used to obtain effective charges and other invariants, and the directions of dμ/dr for the CH bonds were determined. That for the Hs bond lies 23° off the bond direction. The ratio Xa/Xs of the abundances of the Ha and Hs conformers in the d8 isotopomer, required for the above analyses of the spectra, is calculated to be 1.80(4).
