    Notes: We explored the behaviour of a series of phenolic acids used as enhancers or inhibitors of luminol chemiluminescence by three different methods to determine if behaviour was associated with phenolic acid structure and redox character. All the phenolic acids inhibited chemiluminescence when hexacyanoferrate(III) was reacted with the phenolic acids before adding luminol. The redox character of these compounds was clearly related to structure. When hexacyanoferrate(III)-luminol-O2 chemiluminescence was initiated by phenolic acid-luminol mixtures some phenolic acids behaved as enhancers of chemiluminescence, and others as inhibitors. We propose a mechanism to explain these findings. We found direct relationships between the redox character of the phenolic acids and the enhancement or inhibition of the chemiluminescence of the luminol-H2O2-peroxidase system and we propose mechanism to explain these phenomena.

    Notes: The phenomena of mixing and mass transfer of substrates to microorganisms greatly affect the biochemical reactions which take place in fermentation processes. The effect that agitation power has on the observable reaction kinetics involved in beer fermentation has been studied in different types of bioreactors, from laboratory to industrial scale. With this aim in mind, an effectiveness factor, η, is introduced which is defined as the relation between the existing rate of reaction, whichever bioreactor is considered, and the reaction rate in the well-mixed, and therefore presumably homogeneous, bioreactor with no diffusional limits. The limitation to homogeneously supplying nutrient material to the cells produces a decrease in this effectiveness factor, which has been correlated to the energy dissipation rate with a similar slope to that which appears in an existing correlation in the literature between this energy and the mass transfer coefficient. Additionally, a dimensionless reaction-convection number, NRC, which is a function of the power input per unit volume, is proposed, which has been appropriately employed in correlating the effectiveness factor for the types of processes in which convection may be the key resistance factor. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Systematic studies on phenol derivatives facilitates an explanation of the enhancement or inhibition of the luminol-H2O2-horseradish peroxidase system chemiluminescence. Factors that govern the enhancement are the one-electron reduction potentials of the phenoxy radicals (PhO•/PhOH) vs. luminol radicals (L•/LH-) and the reaction rates of the phenol derivatives with the compounds of horseradish peroxidase (HRP-I and HRP-II). Only compounds with radicals with a similar or greater reduction potential than luminol at pH 8.5 (0.8 V) can act as enhancers. Radicals with reduction potentials lower than luminol behave in a different way, because they destroy luminol radicals and inhibit chemiluminescence. The relations between the reduction potential, reaction rates and the Hammett constant of the substituent in a phenol suggest that 4-substituted phenols with Hammett constants (σ) for their substituents similar or greater than 0.20 are enhancers of the luminol-H2O2-horseradish peroxidase chemiluminescence. In contrast, those phenols substituted in position 4 for substituents with Hammett constants (σ) lower than 0.20 are inhibitors of chemiluminescence. On the basis of these studies, the structure of possible new enhancers was predicted. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: 2-Naphthyl acetate acts as a pro-enhancer of the luminol-H2O2-horseradish peroxidase reaction. Cholinesterase hydrolyses the bound acetyl group and produces 2-naphthol, and this compound is an enhancer of the chemiluminescent reaction. We studied the kinetics of chemiluminescent emission and the influence of 2-naphthyl acetate and cholinesterase enzyme concentration. The cholinesterase concentration versus chemiluminescence intensity maximum was linear for cholinesterase between 0 and 181 μU/mL, with a detection limit of 8 μU/mL and a relative standard deviation of 9.5% (n = 3), for a sample containing 90.67 μU/mL of cholinesterase.

    Notes: Abstract Acetonylacetone underwent both acid‐ and base‐catalyzed intramolecular cyclizations to 2,5‐dimethylfuran and 3‐methyl‐2‐cyclopenten‐1‐one, respectively, on pure AlPO4, whereas its modification with increasing amounts of cesium oxide developed AlPO4‐based materials with increased basic properties and, hence, higher selectivities to the base‐catalyzed cyclization process. However, the poisoning of surface acid and base sites indicated that acetonylacetone conversion into 3‐methyl‐2‐cyclopenten‐1‐one can also be attributed to the joint participation of surface acid and base sites. So, acetonylacetone cannot be used for the simultaneous characterization of acidic and basic surface properties of acid–base heterogeneous catalysts.

    Notes: A mathematical model to estimate the solar irradiance profile and average light intensity inside a tubular photobioreactor under outdoor conditions is proposed, requiring only geographic, geometric, and solar position parameters. First, the length of the path into the culture traveled by any direct or disperse ray of light was calculated as the function of three variables: day of year, solar hour, and geographic latitude. Then, the phenomenon of light attenuation by biomass was studied considering Lambert-Beer's law (only considering absorption) and the monodimensional model of Cornet et al. (1900) (considering absorption and scattering phenomena). Due to the existence of differential wavelength absorption, none of the literature models are useful for explaining light attenuation by the biomass. Therefore, an empirical hyperbolic expression is proposed. The equations to calculate light path length were substituted in the proposed hyperbolic expression, reproducing light intensity data obtained in the center of the loop tubes. The proposed model was also likely to estimate the irradiance accurately at any point inside the culture. Calculation of the local intensity was thus extended to the full culture volume in order to obtain the average irradiance, showing how the higher biomass productivities in a Phaeodactylum tricornutum UTEX 640 outdoor chemostat culture could be maintained by delaying light limitation. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Abstract 2-Methyl-3-butyn-2-ol underwent almost exclusively dehydration to 3-methyl-3-buten-1-yne (acid activity) on pure AlPO4, whereas its modification with cesium oxide developed AlPO4-based materials with increased basic properties and hence, high selectivities to the base-catalyzed cleavage of MBOH yielding acetone and acetylene. At the same conversion level, catalysts obtained from cesium chloride exhibit higher selectivities to the base-catalyzed process than those obtained from cesium acetate.

    Notes: Abstract The skeletal isomerization of 3,3-dimethyl-1-butene over AlPO4 (Al/P=1), CrPO4 (Cr/P=1), and CrPO4−AlPO4 (CrAlP, 5–10 wt.% AlPO4) catalysts is a first order reaction. Catalytic performance is affected by the precipitation agent. CrPO4 catalysts obtained in propylene oxide-aqueous ammonia showed the highest activity. Moreover, the incorporation of AlPO4 to CrPO4 developed CrAlP catalysts that exhibited increased activity, irrespective of the precipitation method, as compared with both AlPO4 and CrPO4 catalysts. Besides, CrAlP catalysts prepared in propylene oxide-aqueous ammonia were the more active ones.

    Notes: Abstract AlPO4-cesium oxide (20 wt.%) materials retain a low degree of crystallinity on calcination at 873 K for 3 h. After DTA measurements (1423 K), AlPO4 crystallizes (tridymite form). Furthermore, DRIFT spectroscopy shows that the P−OH stretching vibration (at 3670 cm−1) of AlPO4 support disappears upon cesium oxide loading. Moreover, Al and P atoms remain in tetrahedral coordination as in unmodified AlPO4. Furthermore, the incorporation of cesium oxide leads, simultaneously, to a progressive decrease in surface area and pore volume as well as to an increase in the most frequently occurring pore radius.

    Notes: A 10.5-m3 concentric tube jet loop reactor was used to study the influence of the working liquid volume, mean superficial air velocity, operating pressure, downcomer aeration, liquid jet velocity, and two ratios of draft tube/reactor diameter (Dt/D) on liquid circulation time (Tc). The experiments were carried out in a water-air system with the use of the acid pulse method. Results showed that circulation time was independent of the working liquid volume over a certain minimum liquid level, whereas downcomer aeration and Dt/D ratio appeared as amenable parameters to achieve a high degree of control over liquid circulation and mixing efficiency, and to optimize the overall reactor performance. Increasing the operating pressure caused a reduction of the liquid circulation rate. However, ionger residence times of the air bubbles and the higher mass transfer driving force that result at higher pressures improve oxygen utilization. The relationship between Tc and air load was independent of the operating pressure, provided the correlation is given as a function of the mean superficial air velocity. Neither liquid circulation nor gas holdup were significantly affected by liquid jet velocity. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
