    Notes: Abstract We present a technique for dynamically maintaining a collection of arithmetic expressions represented by binary trees (whose leaves are variables and whose internal nodes are operators). A query operation asks for the value of an expression (associated with the root of a tree). Update operations include changing the value of a variable and combining or decomposing expressions by linking or cutting the corresponding trees. Our dynamic data structure uses linear space and supports queries and updates in logarithmic time. An important application is the dynamic maintenance of maximum flow and shortest path in series-parallel digraphs under a sequence of vertex and edge insertions, series and parallel compositions, and their respective inverses. Queries include reporting the maximum flow or shortestst-path in a series-parallel subgraph.

    Notes: Various methods of hydrogenating ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) polymers were investigated as part of an effort to improve their stability and increase their usefulness as matrix materials for nanocluster synthesis. Hydrogenation with Pd/BaSO4 catalyst in high-pressure hydrogen gas was only partly successful and limited to unfunctionalized polymers such as polymethyltetracyclododecene. Block copolymers containing phosphine or carboxylic acid functionalities were successfully hydrogenated by diimide generated in situ from p toluenesulfonylhydrazide. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Three triblock copolymers of nylon-6 (Ny6) and aromatic poly(sulfone ether) (PSuE) were investigated relative to their morphology and their thermal properties. Generally, the nylon blocks of the three Ny6-PSuE-Ny6 samples were very short (between 5 and 16 monomer units). Heterogeneous, microphase-separated morphologies could be observed for all samples, independent of the processing conditions, i.e., solvent casting or melt cooling. However, the process conditions were highly influential on the formation of the supramolecular structures (i.e., spherulites), especially when the crystallizable block was short.

    Notes: Silver cluster formation in bulk block copolymer films (static-cast) and in thin films (microtomed or spin-coated) was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. In all cases, the silver clusters were formed predominantly within the original silver-containing microdomains. A greater degree of control of cluster formation and a narrower cluster size distribution were achieved in the thin films of block copolymers. The interfaces between domains of the heterogeneous copolymers and the free interfaces of the thin film specimens all played an important role in nucleation and growth of clusters.

    Description: The Goddard trajectory chemistry model was used with ER-2 aircraft data to test our current knowledge of radical photochemistry during the POLARIS (Polar Ozone Loss in the Arctic Region In Summer) campaign. The results of the trajectory chemistry model with and without trajectories are used to identify cases where steady state does not accurately describe the measurements. Over the entire mission, using trajectory chemistry reduces the variability in the modeled NO(x) comparisons to data by 25% with respect to the same model simulating steady state. Although the variability is reduced, NO(x)/NO(y) trajectory model results were found to be systematically low relative to the observations by 20-30% as seen in previous studies. Using new rate constants for reactions important in NO(y) partitioning improves the agreement of NO(x)/NO(y) with the observations but a 5-10% bias still exists. OH and HO2 individually are underpredicted by 15% of the standard steady state model and worsen with the new rate constants. Trajectory chemistry model results of OH/HO2 were systematically low by 10-20% but improve using the new rates constants because of the explicit dependence on NO. This suggests that our understanding of NO(x) is accurate to the 20% level and HO(x) chemistry is accurate to the 30% level in the lower stratosphere or better for the POLARIS regime. The behavior of the NO(x) and HO(x) comparisons to data using steady state versus trajectory chemistry and with updated rate coefficients is discussed in ten-ns of known chemical mechanisms and lifetimes.

We report in situ measurements of OH and HO2 in the exhaust plumes of a supersonic (Air France Concorde) and a subsonic (NASA ER-2) aircraft in the lower stratosphere. These measurements imply that reactions with OH are responsible for oxidizing only a small fraction of SO2 (2%), and thus cannot explain the large number of particles observed in the exhaust wake of the Concorde.
