Notes: Abstract.  With the overall critical current density, J c, remaining low for PbMo6S8, the addition of 0.3 at.% Sn noticeably improved the performance. The enhancement occurs despite the presence of excess Pb and a slightly suppressed T c. The increase in J c can be attributed to a better homogeneity with respect to the chemical composition of the samples, which may be as a consequence of Sn substitution in the lattice. Detailed calorimetric investigation of undoped PbMo6S8 showed a T c distribution down to 9 K evidenced by a smearing of T c. This may be due to a progressive degradation of the sample quality leading to a plausible off-stoichiometry. High-resolution Auger electron spectroscopic experiments suggest a variation in composition indicating excellent correspondence with the specific heat data. However, no such deviation was detected for the Sn-doped samples and therefore the observed raise in J c. The results are discussed in conjunction with oxygen, lead and tin incorporated PbMo6S8.

Notes: Abstract.  A direct observation of the grain-boundary phases for several well-characterized hot-pressed PbMo6S8 samples were made by Auger electron spectroscopy. The surface elemental concentrations are completely different when compared to its bulk composition. The thickness of this altered composition is in the range 100–200 AÅ gradually increasing with increase in hot-pressing temperature. Also, evidence of segregation of impurities, such as carbon and SiO x , to the grain-boundaries were noticed for some of the samples. Calorimetric experiments show a continuous broadening and a reduction in amplitude of the specific heat anomaly at T C. This in terms of superconducting volume fraction indicates a T C distribution in the range 9–15 K. Such an observation can be related to the local inhomogeneities with respect to the ternary composition, i.e., a deviation from ideal stoichiometry, PbMo6S8. The results are discussed in conjunction with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. By considering the grain-boundary phases and the calorimetric observation of inhomogeneities, a plausible explanation is given for the low critical current densities in these materials.

Notes: Abstract We report on the epitaxial growth of BaCuO2 infinite layer (stabilised with CO3 groups) thin films by rf magnetron sputtering on (100) SrTiO3 and (100) LaAlO3. Excellent (001) films with c∼4Å are obtained at 540 °C in a sputtering atmosphere of 1–10 mTorr of Ar+O2 with some addition of CO2. Off axis x-ray analysis reveal perfect in plane ordering and a tetragonal structure with a=b∼3.96 Å. For these deposition conditions the resistivity at room temperature is of the order of several Ωcm and exhibits a strong semiconductor-like behaviour. When the deposition temperature is increased to 660 °C, a supercell along the c axis appears with a period of about 8Å. After an in-situ annealing of these films in 7 Torr of oxygen at 500 °C, ϱ(300K) falls to 800μΩcm. The resistance versus temperature curve reveals then a metallic behaviour and a superconducting transitions with onsets between 10–40K.

Notes: Abstract Surface impedance measurements on highly c-axis epitaxial Nd 1+x Ba 2−x Cu 3 O 7 (x=0, 0.09 and 0.12) films grown by d.c. magnetron sputtering on LaAlO 3 substrates are presented. It is found that the zero temperature London penetration depth correlates well with the critical temperature of the films and with the corresponding number of carriers. The low temperature penetration depth follows a linear T law for optimally doped Nd123 sample and a T 2 law in Nd-rich samples. In the case of the heavily underdoped samples (T c 〈 60K) the T 2 law extends to temperatures higher than T c/2. The possible role of the Nd/Ba ions substitution on the penetration depth and surface resistance is discussed.

Notes: Abstract YBa2Cu3O7−δ/(Y1−xPrx)Ba2Cu3O7−δ multilayers have been used to probe coupling through (Y1−x:Prx)Ba2Cu3O7−δ alloys. We observe that the coupling between ultrathin YBa2Cu3O7−δ layers, 12 or 24 Å thick, survives through several hundred Å of (Y1−xPrx)Ba2Cu3O7−δ with x=0.4 and 0.55. Tc versus the thickness of the spacer-alloy, and activation energies for flux motion, with fields parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis, have been used to probe this long range coupling. All these experiments point to an unusually large coupling length for these two alloy compositions. In the x=0.55 case this result is particularly surprising since the alloy material display a semiconducting behaviour for this composition. Tc measurements, activation energies, and a study of the vortex dynamics in these coupled multilayers is presented along with new results obtained on a series of multilayers built with a more insulating alloy, x=0.7.

Notes: Abstract We report on ferroelectric field effect experiments on Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3/SrCuO2 and Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3/SrRuO3 epitaxial heterostructures with an emphasis on the material characterization. Upon reversing the polarization of the Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 ferroelectric layer, we measured a nonvolatile change in the resistivity of ultrathin layers of SrCuO2 and SrRuO3. In thin SrRuO3 films (30 Å) up to a 9% resistivity change has been observed at room temperature.

Notes: Abstract We present local probe tunneling spectroscopy of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ single crystals for different oxygen concentrations, from optimally doped (Tc=92.2 K) to highly overdoped (Tc=56.0 K) phases. With increasing oxygen overdoping, the superconducting gap (Δp) is reduced and the dip structure beyond Δp at negative sample bias1 shifts toward the Fermi energy. Apart from the shift in energy of these features, the generic shape of the tunneling spectra remains unchanged. The gap roughly scales with Tc, and 2Δp/kBTc stays large even in the highly overdoped phase. We also present preliminary results on the temperature dependence of the tunneling spectra. They are consistent with a gap that is largely independent on temperature up to the vicinity of Tc
