Notes: Abstract β-globin haplotypes of 20 β-thalassemia (β-thal) and 87 βA Mexican mestizo chromosomes were analyzed to ascertain the origin of the β-thal alleles and the frequencies and distribution of the βA haplotypes among northwestern Mexican mestizos. Sixteen β-thal chromosomes carried six Mediterranean alleles [five codon 39 C→T; two IVS1:1 G→A; two IVS1:5 G→A; three IVS1:110 G(A; one codon 11 (–T) and three (δβ)°-thal]; the remaining four were linked to three rare alleles (two –28 A→C and one each: –87 C→T and initiation codon ATG→GTG). Among the 87 βA chromosomes, 17 different 5′ haplotypes with frequencies for 1, 3, 2 and 5 of 39.0%, 17. 2%, 9.2% and 6.9%, respectively, were observed. The β-haplotype analysis showed that 13 out of 16 Mediterranean chromosomes could easily be explained by gene migration; however, one codon 39 associated with haplotype 4 (– – – – + + –), one IVS1:1 with haplotype 1(+ – – – – + +) and one IVS1:5 G→A, may represent separate mutational events. Analysis of the rare alleles showed that the –28 A→C mutation was associated with the commonest βA haplotype in Mexican mestizos, Mediterraneans and the total world population; therefore an independent origin cannot be ruled out. The –87 C→T and initiation codon ATG→GTG were found with β-haplotypes different from the reported ones, suggesting an indigenous origin.

Notes: Abstract The reaction of Woordward's reagent K (WRK) with model amino acids and proteins has been analyzed. Our results indicate that WRK forms 340-nm-absorbing adducts with sulfhydryl- and imidazol-containing compounds, but not with carboxylic acid derivatives, in agreement with Llamaset al. [(1986),J. Am. Chem. Soc. 108, 5543–5548], but not with Sinha and Brewer [(1985),Anal. Biochem. 151, 327–333]. The chemical modification ofEscherichia coli andSaccharomyces cerevisiae phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinases with WRK leads to an increase in the absorption at 340 nm, and we have demonstrated its reaction with His and Cys residues in these proteins. These results caution against claims of glutamic or aspartic acid modification by WRK based on the absorption at 340 nm of protein-WRK adducts.

Notes: Abstract  The genetic variation of 102 natural populations of wild barley growing in Spain was assessed using RAPDs (random amplified polymorphic DNA). The plant material included the annual species H. marinum subsp. marinum (22 populations) and subsp. gussoneanum (14), H. murinum subsp. murinum (7) and subsp. leporinum (35), and the perennial species H. bulbosum (17) and H. secalinum (7). Ten of the tested 64 arbitrary 10-mer primers amplified polymorphic DNA in all taxonomic units. Analyses was performed within and between populations, species and subspecies. The primers gave a total of 250 RAPD products. The level of polymorphism varied between taxonomic units depending on the primers employed and the plant reproductive system. In general, the most variable were the allogamous species H. secalinum and H. bulbosum and the autogamous H. marinum subsp. marinum. Among the amplified bands, 69 (27%) were shared by at least two different taxonomic units. The remaining bands were specific. The results demonstrate differences in the degree of similarity between taxonomic units. Jaccard’s similarity coefficients for interval measure within and between populations were used to produce a cluster diagram using the unweighted pair-group method (UPGMA). The different populations of the species and subspecies of Hordeum fell into three groups. The first group contained the populations belonging to both subspecies of H. marinum, plus those of H. secalinum. The populations of H. marinum subsp. gussoneanum were very closely associated. Those of H. marinum subsp. marinum were grouped in a broad cluster. The second group, occupying the innermost position of the tree, was very closely associated with the populations of both subspecies of H. murinum. The third branch segregated H. bulbosum. A series of RAPD markers were investigated by cleaving the amplified products of the same size with restriction endonucleases that recognize targets of 4- or 6-bp. The production of equivalent fragments following cleavage by the same enzyme would seem to demonstrate their homology in samples from different individuals, populations or taxonomic units.

Notes: Abstract Phaseolin genes are induced by unidentified factors at the onset of seed maturation in embryos of both Phaseolus and tobacco. We show that in tobacco, expression of a β-phaseolin promoter-GUS (PHSβ-uidA) mRNA and the corresponding GUS activity, could be induced by abscisic acid (ABA). The effect paralleled an increase in the amount of endogenous 12S globulin (Glb12S) mRNA. In contrast, ABA repressed the expression of isocitrate lyase (ll9) mRNA. The responses of PHSβ-uidA and Glb12S to ABA declined markedly between 11 and 13 DAF, indicating that they are developmentally regulated. We also show evidence that the ABA response of PHSβ-uidA can be modulated by the external concentrations of sucrose and Ca2+ ion. These compounds inhibited the response if added to the medium separately, in the concentration ranges of 80-200 mM for sucrose and 0.76–20 mM for CaCl2. However, the presence of both sucrose and CaCl2 restored the ABA response to 20–40% of the maximum value measured in sucrose- and CaCl2-free media. These results suggest that ABA induction of β-phaseolin gene expression is modulated by developmental signals and by the external supply of sucrose and calcium to the embryos.

Notes: Abstract A study was made of the genetic variability of 101 barley populations belonging to the four, wild, Spanish species of the genusHordeum (the autogamousH. marinum subspp.marinum andgussoneanum, andH. murinum subspp.murinum andleporinum, plus the allogamous speciesH. bulbosum andH. secalinum). Electrophoresis of endosperm proteins was performed using a large number of individuals from each population sampled, in order to determine intra- and interpopulational variation. The distribution of variability observed by population and taxonomic unit, is closely related to the breeding system.Hordeum bulbosum showed the greatest intrapopulational variability andH. marinum subsp.gussoneanum the least. In contrast to the autogamous species, the allogamous species showed low levels of interpopulational variation.

Notes: Zea mays L.)–wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–corn–oat (Avena sativa L.) crop rotation common in the area. Crop water consumption and D were estimated with the zero flux plane–water balance equation. The improved irrigation schedule, only applied to the two corn crops, saved 170 mm of irrigation water, or 15% of the irrigation water used for traditionally irrigated plots. Drainage during the experiment was reduced from 235 mm in traditional to 119 mm in improved treatment. The cumulative grain yield for subsequent crops was unaffected by the irrigation treatments (31230 ± 3900 vs. 30770 ± 3430 kg ha−1). Grouped across the 4-yr period, variation of evapotranspiration (ET) between individually instrumented sites (4%) was lower than the variation of D (30%). When daily ET and D estimates were grouped for cropping and intercultivation periods and compared with changes in water storage added to irrigation and rainfall, the mass balance principle was satisfied. Experienced corn farmers may apply this improved schedule by assessing soil depth of wetting.

Notes: Abstract A nitrogenous controlled release fertilizer (Floranid 32) and a treatment of municipal organic waste compost were tested under two irrigation managements (conventional and ET-adjusted irrigation rates) with the aim of assessing risk of nitrate leaching to the aquifer. A check without N fertilizer was introduced. The experiment was carried out at La Poveda Field Station (30 km SE Madrid, Spain) in alluvial soils with water table depth at 4 m and under maize cropping. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications, allocating 12 plots to each irrigation management. Although N fertilizer rate (150 kg ha−1) was reduced at half as related to a previous experiment, no difference in grain yields was observed. This result relates to a high content of soil-N. Floranid showed promising results in controlling N-leaching in comparison with urea that exhibited an accelerated rate of N release which finally determines low use of N by the plant and marked NO3 − leaching. Treatment of municipal waste compost showed NO3 − concentrations in the soil water solution of similar values as those of urea at 140 cm. ET-adjusted irrigation showed no drainage during the corn growing season and lower NO3 − concentrations in the soil water solution which could indicate a general lower rate of N solubilization.

Notes: Abstract In this paper a CMOS Hearing Aid Device is described. The system is composed of a low-distortion low-noise preamplifier, an automatic gain control (AGC), a fully programmable switched-capacitor filter (equalizer), and a control system. The device has been fabricated in a 1.2 μm CMOS analog process. The dynamic range of the device is 55 dB while the harmonic distortion components are below −50 dB. Experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed architecture.

Notes: Abstract The cost of irrigation water to the farmers in Mendoza Province consists of three components; canal cleaning by the farmer, a water charge to their Users Association (UA) and a water charge to the provincial Irrigation Department (DGI). The total cost of irrigation water shows large differences when the area of the UA is taken into consideration: farmers in smaller associations pay considerably more than those in large units. This is the case for all three groups of costs. The annual budgets of 31 UA's were analyzed with respect to 19 budget items prescribed by DGI. Several of these items contain a low percentage of the total budget. Further, they make participation of users during the annual meeting in which the budget is discussed and approved unnecessary difficult. We recommend to reduce the number of budget items to 7. Because of low collection levels (average 64%) the UA's spend a major part of their income on recurrent costs like salaries. As a result little is spent on maintenance and improvement of the system, creating dissatisfaction with the paying water users. Thus. a vicious circle needs to be broken about the deterioration of the system, dissatisfaction of users, less participation in the running of the Association and further deterioration. Recent experience shows that the discontinuation of flow to non-paying users in combination with improved water delivery services by the UA breaks the circle.
