    Notes: Abstract. To clarify the relationship of sex male hormones and bone in men, we studied in 140 healthy elderly men (aged 55–90 years) the relation between serum levels of androgens and related sex hormones, bone mineral density (BMD) at different sites, and other parameters related to bone metabolism. Our results show a slight decrease of serum-free testosterone with age, with an increase of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in a third of the elderly subjects studied. BMD decreased significantly with age in all regions studied, except in the lumbar spine. We found a positive correlation between body mass index (BMI) and BMD at the lumbar spine and femoral neck (P 〈 0.001). No relationship was found (uni- and multivariate regression analysis) between serum androgens or sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and BMD. We found a positive correlation of vitamin D binding protein (DBP) and osteocalcin with lumbar spine BMD and with BMI, DBP, IGF-1, and PTH with femoral neck BMD. In conclusion, there is a slight decline in free testosterone and BMD in the healthy elderly males. However, sex male hormones are not correlated to the decrease in hip BMD. Other age-related factors must be associated with bone loss in elderly males.

    Notes: Abstract The distribution of Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Mn, and Fe in soils dedicated to rice crops have been studied. Total content and extractable fraction have been determined by acid digestion and extraction with EDTA, respectively. A method of selective sequential extraction (SSE) has been applied to determine the fraction of the metals bound to organic matter, soluble plus exchangeable, precipitated with carbonates, associated to Fe and Mn amorphous oxides, precipitated with sulfides, and the residual; all the elements show their most important fraction as precipitates, mainly as forms of sulfides and carbonates. The forms available by plants and bound to the organic matter are less represented, except for Cu and Ni.

    Notes: Abstract. Estrogen-receptor–like binding was partially characterized in liver tissue of prespawning female largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (LMB). Saturation and Scatchard analyses exhibited estrogen binding activity with high affinity (Kd in the 10−9 M range) and limited capacity (nuclear = 37.4 fmol/g tissue; cytosol = 234 fmol/g tissue). Androgens, progestins, and cortisol competed poorly for binding in competition studies. Thus, LMB liver estrogen binding activity possesses similar properties to estrogen receptors (ER) described in other vertebrates. In a study of prespawning female LMB from Lake Hartwell, SC/GA, a reservoir contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), individuals environmentally exposed to high levels of PCBs had significantly lower ER binding capacity (Bmax) and higher nonspecific binding (NS) than fish from a relatively uncontaminated reference location. Fish obtained at a site with intermediate levels of PCBs did not exhibit the expected decrease in Bmax. The lower Bmax observed in fish from the location with high PCB contamination is consistent with the reported behavior of liver ER in fish experimentally exposed to PCBs. Increased NS in the ER assays could be related to elevations in albumin associated with the PCB exposure.

    Notes: Abstract  RAPD markers and agronomic traits were used to determine the genetic relationships among 32 breeding lines of melon belonging to seven varietal types. Most of the breeding lines were Galia and Piel de Sapo genotypes, which are currently being used in breeding programmes to develop new hybrid combinations. A total of 115 polymorphic reliable bands from 43 primers and 24 agronomic traits were scored for genetic distance calculations and cluster analysis. A high concordance between RAPDs and agronomic traits was observed when genetic relationships among lines were assessed. In addition, RAPD data were highly correlated with the pedigree information already known for the lines and revealed the existence of two clusters for each varietal type that comprised the lines sharing similar agronomic features. These groupings were consistent with the development of breeding programmes trying to generate two separate sets of parental lines for hybrid production. Nevertheless, the performance of certain hybrids indicated that RAPDs were more suitable markers than agronomic traits in predicting genetic distance among the breeding lines analysed. The employment of RAPDs as molecular markers both in germplasm management and improvement, as well as in the selection of parental lines for the development of new hybrid combinations, is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We have quantified the evolution during 1994 of the impact on the Tagus river of liquid releases of3H (51.3 TBq in the cited year), originating from the functioning of the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant, and conditioned by the management of the cooling reservoir water. Taking into account, on the one hand, that tritiated water is hydrodynamically indistinguishable from untritiated water when both form part of the same mass of liquid, and, on the other, the practically null stratification and forced circulation of the water in the cited cooling reservoir, together with the hydrological fluxes interchanged between the said reservoir and the Tagus river (which is entirely regulated in the section under study and, because of prolonged drought, had a relatively small flow during the study period), we were able to model satisfactorily the temporal evolution of the3H activity in the cooling reservoir.

    Notes: Abstract We describe the procedure developed for the electrolytic concentration of3H in water, together with systematically applied checks to guarantee the reproducibility of the process and to minimize the variability between water samples concentrated simultaneously in the different electrolytic cells. Starting from initial volume of 250 ml water, we obtained enrichment parameters normally greater than 70%, with a dispersion always less than 5%. Measuring the concentrated and the unelectrolyzed samples under the same conditions, we found that the lowest detectable activities had been improved from around 1.5 to 0.3 Bq/l. This allowed us to quantify the3H activity levels of 100% of the rainwater samples collected in Cáceres from 1994 to 1996. The resulting average value for this period was (0.79±0.38) Bq/l.
