    Notes: Abstract Muon spin relaxation (μSR) studies were carried out on YFeMnO4. Two interesting phenomena were found in measurements of longitudinal relaxation time spectra atT〉T cusp for a single crystal: (1) difference of the relaxation rates between the directions parallel with and perpendicular to thec-axis, and (2) suppression of local field fluctuations in a longitudinal external field. The spectra atT 〉T cusp were reproduced with the function exp[-(λ0 t)β]. The results are discussed under a picture of the magnetic spin fluctuations of triangular antiferromagnets.

    Notes: Abstract The paramagnetic state of the muonic atom formed by the negative muon (μ −) bound to the oxygen in highT c LaSrCuO which was found in our recentμ − spin rotation experiments was applied to probe an interaction between the paramagnetic electron and the highT c supercurrent. The observed enhanced spin relaxation rates of the (μ −O) system in the superconducting state revealed the presence of such an interaction.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of anti-symmetric electrolytes (CaCl2, Ca(SCN)2, MgCl2, and/or Mg(SCN)2) and pH on the phase behavior, the ζ-potential, the hydrodynamic diameter and the surface charge density of an oil-inwater type (O/W-type) microemulsion formed in solutions of an amphoteric surfactant (N α,N α-dimethyl-N ɛ-lauroyllysine, DMLL)/n-octane/1-pentanol/brine have been examined. The formation of the microemulsion in the presence of CaCl2 and/or Ca(SCN)2 is of Winsor-type with an increase in the concentration of 1-pentanol. Particularly, microemulsion is not formed by the addition of Ca(SCN)2 in a pH region less than 2.6. The ζ-potential and the surface charge density of the microemulsion in the presence of CaCl2 decrease with an increase in pH and show slightly positive values in the isoelectric region (pH 5-7), while, in the presence of Ca(SCN)2, the ζ-potential and the surface charge density show negative values in the same region at which the net charge of DMLL molecules becomes almost zero. The hydrodynamic diameters in the presence of CaCl2 show a maximum value around pH 2.5, whereas, in the presence of Ca(SCN)2, the minimum value is around pH 5.5. Similar tendencies are recognized in results for the ζ-potential, the hydrodynamic diameter and the surface charge density of the O/W-type microemulsion in the presence of MgCl2 and Mg(SCN)2. A new formula to estimate the binding constants (K) of Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl−, and SCN− to the hydrophilic groups in DMLL molecules and the adsorption density of DMLL molecules on the oil/water interface (N) in the presence of antisymmetric electrolytes has been derived.K for Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl−, and SCN− was found to beK Ca=0.12M−1,K Mg=0.14 M−1,K Cl=0.0084±0.0016 M−1, respectively.N for DMLL molecules in the presence of CaCl2, Ca(SCN)2, MgCl2 and/or Mg(SCN)2 was found to be 0.50 nm−2, 0.38 nm−2, 0.44 nm−2, and 0.47 nm−2, respectively; and the surfactant (DMLL) numbers per O/W-type microemulsion droplet change from a few hundreds to a few thousands with changing pH. The larger the hydrodynamic diameter of the O/W-type microemulsion, the greater the number of DMLL molecules adsorbed on the O/W-type microemulsion surfaces.

    Notes: Abstract Recent measurements on NiO and CoO show a complex temperature dependence. In this work, the local μ+ fields are examined over an extended temperature range. Only one precession frequency of 61.3 MHz was observed in the μ+ spin precession in zero field in NiO, similar to the case in MnO. The signal broadens at 200 K and is difficult to observe above 250 K. In contrast, in CoO, at least three lines are observed: two sharp lines at 54.2 MHz, and at 78 MHz, with an additional small peak at 162 MHz. Above 40 K, the 54.2 MHz signal (CoO) vanishes, but the 78 MHz signal survives to 110 K. However, at 270–280 K, a new signal at 13 MHz is also observed. Dipole field calculations of these 3d‐oxides (MnO, NiO and CoO) for various lattice sites (symmetric sites and O‐bonded positions) are examined and compared with the experimental results, with considerations toward the dynamics of the muons.

    Notes: Abstract Zero and longitudinal field μSR measurements on diluted triangular‐lattice antiferromagnet LuFeMgO4 have revealed gradual and highly anisotropic slowing‐down of spin fluctuation. Relaxation rate \lambda in the condition with initial muon spins perpendicular to the hexagonal c‐plane shows divergent behavior while that in the parallel configuration remains finite. At certain temperature range the fluctuation of spins is suppressed by a small external magnetic field. Monte Carlo calculation suggests that the correlation time for z(c)‐component of spins diverges first on cooling.

    Notes: Abstract The paramagnetic (μ-O) state formed at the oxygen site in high Tc LaSrCuO was used to probe an interaction between the localized moment of the paramagnetic electron and the conduction electrons via zero field μ- spin relaxation. The enhanced relaxation rates consistently observed in the superconducting state of various Sr concentrations are explained as an effect of spin‐pairing in the high Tc supercurrent.

    Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of muon interactions has been studied in ferroelectric KDP ( H2KPO4) and DKDP ( D2KPO4) using conventional μSR and muon spin resonance spectroscopy. In longitudinal field measurements, a fast relaxing component and a slow relaxing component were observed. The slow relaxing component is attributed to diamagnetic muons. The muon spin resonance measurements indicate that the fast relaxing component results from some muonium like species: either normal or anomalous. In zero field and weak longitudinal field μSR (0–100 G), a remarkable peak in the fast relaxing component is observed around 220 K in both KDP and DKDP. An additional feature is also seen around 300 K. The amplitude of the resonance measurement has a broad minimum around 200 K which corresponds to the maximum in the relaxation rate in longitudinal field (100 G). The temperature dependence of the muonium relaxation rate in KDP is almost identical to that of DKDP. The diamagnetic fraction also shows almost no difference in relaxation rate or asymmetry for DKDP and KDP.

    Notes: Abstract LFμSR studies on the pure fullerenes C60 and C70 show temperature dependent features associated with the reorientational behaviour of the fullerenyl radicals MuC60 and MuC70 in the crystalline host substrate. If not excluded from the experimental setup, molecular oxygen undergoes spin exchange reactions with the radicals. The data for C60 correspond to a situation effectively static at 150 K and fully averaged to isotropy at 300 K, while for C70 the data conspicuously do not conform to the predictions of the pseudostatic model employed in ALC‐μSR studies.

    Notes: Abstract Using a pulsed muon beam, we have investigated the microscopic μ+ behavior in solid H2 and D2 down to 0.6 K by the μ+SR method. From the studies of μ+ spin relaxation phenomena in solid para‐ H2 and ortho‐ D2, we have found that μ+ forms three distinct microscopic states; H2μ+( D2μ+)(20\sim25\%), muonium (15\sim20\%) and μ+(\sim60\%). In H2μ+, the μ+ spin is depolarized in solid para‐ H2 and a local magnetic field Bloc=1\sim2 G is deduced from LF‐μ+SR measurements. The magnitude of Bloc is inconsistent with the magnetic dipolar field (\sim25 G) expected from the magnetic moments of two protons in the H2μ+ molecule and suggests that the H2μ+ molecule might be in the rotationally excited state. From LF‐μ+SR measurements, muonium and μ+ have been found to diffuse in solid o‐ D_2. The diffusion rate of muonium is two order of magnitude larger than that of μ+.

    Notes: Abstract A newly developed μSR method combined with a tunable, high power and sharply pulsed laser was applied to GaAs. Anomalous transport phenomena of the photo excited effects into bulk crystal were observed, given that the stopping range of implanted muons is about 200 times larger than photo-absorption depth. In addition, the measurement of photon energy dependence of muon spin depolarization under laser irradiation suggests the impurity level associated with Mu BC 0 is located within the band gap of GaAs.
