Notes: Abstract We present the genotype/phenotype correlation analysis for 16 cystic fibrosis (CF) patients who carry mutation R334W. Current age and age of diagnosis was significantly higher in the R334W/any-mutation group (P 〈 0.05 and P 〈 0.01), compared with the Δ508/Δ508 group. A slightly, but not significantly, worse lung function was found in the R334W/any-mutation group, when compared with the Δ508/Δ508 patients. The proportion of patients with lung colonization with bacterial pathogens was slightly, but not significantly, higher in the R334W/any-mutation group (71.4%), compared with the Δ508/Δ508 or R334W/Δ508 groups (55.5%). None of the R334W patients had meconium ileus but 60% were pancreatic insufficient (PI), a significantly lower proportion (P ≪ 0.001) than Δ508/Δ508 patients. Two R334W/N1303K compound heterozygous sisters were PI but discrepant for lung function. Two groups of three sibs with genotype R334W/Δ508 showed interfamilial discordant clinical data for lung and pancreatic function. The data provided here for mutation R334W demonstrate that this mutation is responsible for a less severe form of CF than Δ508. Interfamilial differences for PI and lung function suggest that other factors, viz. genetic, environmental and medical, contribute to the wide spectrum of clinical differences observed in CF patients with the same CF transmembrane conductance regulator genotypes.

Notes: Abstract Recent ethnographic research carried out in Spain has allowed the cultivation ofLathyrus sativus L. andL. cicera L. to be documented. Both species already appear in the Spanish archaeological record. Grown under traditional farming systems,L. sativus L. andL. cicera L. are still used for human consumption (onlyL. sativus L.) and both are used for fodder. Data on cultivation history, fanning practices, crop processing sequence and uses are here presented, which will enable a better understanding of their possible roles in prehistoric times.

Notes: Abstract 4-Methyl-5-nonanol (1) is the male-produced aggregation pheromone of the palm weevil, Dynamis borassi (F.) from Colombia. The pheromone was identified by coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analysis of male- and female-produced volatiles, and comparative GC–mass spectrometry (MS) of weevil-produced 1. In field experiments in Colombia, traps baited with a stereoisomeric mixture of synthetic 1 (3 mg/day) plus sugarcane captured more weevils than traps baited with 1 or sugarcane alone, suggesting that pheromone and plant volatiles are synergistically attractive. Use of a chiral, stereoisomer-separating Cyclodex-B column in GC-EAD and GC-MS analyses revealed that D. borassi males produce, and antennae of males and females respond to (4S,5S)-1. Previously identified palm weevil (Rhynchophorus spp.) aggregation pheromones 5-methyl-4-octanol (cruentol) and 6-methyl-2-hepten-4-ol (rhynchophorol) also elicited antennal responses by D. borassi. In field experiments, D. borassi females were captured equally well in traps baited with sugarcane plus either 1, cruentol or rhynchophorol. In contrast, D. borassi males were captured most often in traps baited with sugarcane plus 1. Because D. borassi is a potential vector of the red ring nematode that causes the lethal red ring disease of palms, pheromone-based trapping of D. borassi could aid in monitoring or management of red ring disease in commercial palm plantations.

Notes: Abstract The prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in several tick species was studied over a 2 year period in two ecologically different areas in Spain. One area was an endemic area for Lyme disease, with a number of autochthonous human cases and supported large populations of Ixodes ricinus on cattle and birds; the second area was characterized by the absence of I. ricinus together with the presence of foxes and their associated tick species. While I. ricinus was the main vector of B. burgdoreri in the endemic area (with a mean prevalence of 14% in adults and 51% in nymphs), adults of both Ixodes canisuga and Ixodes hexagonus had high rates of B. burgdorferi prevalence (30 and 28%, respectively) in the zone where I. ricinus was absent. Immatures of Ixodes frontalis were found to be carriers of the spirochete only in those zones where I. ricinus is present, suggesting evidence for reservoir competence in a tick-bird cycle.

Notes: Abstract The high levels of land use, inputs, and investment, along with the specific forms of organization and management that characterized Cuba's state extensive growth model during the 1980s, could not overcome the challenges posed by the integrated care required by the sugarcane crop and corresponding industrial activities. Starting in 1993, large state farms have been converted into Basic Units of Cooperative Production with some degree of autonomy. Although first-year production results are not satisfactory, it is too early to evaluate their performance. Their establishment, however, is a step in the right direction to alleviate the problems that the previous forms of organization and management inherent to the state extensive growth model were unable to solve.

Notes: Abstract Aqueous solutions of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) or 2,6-di-o-methyl-β-cyclodextrin (DM-β-CD) and dodecylethyldimethylammonium bromide (D12EDMAB) have been studied from speed of sound (u) data at 298.15 K, using a pulse-echo-overlap technique. The molecular encapsulation process of the surfactant monomer into the cyclodextrin cavity and its effect in the micellization process of the surfactant have been analyzed from theu measurements: I) as a function of [D12EDMAB] in the presence of several initial cyclodextrin concentrations (β-CD or.DM-β-CD); II) as a function of [cyclodextrin] (β-CD or DM-β-CD), for an initial micellar solution of D12EDMAB and; III) as a function of the [cyclodextrin]/[surfactant] stoichiometric concentrations. Both inclusion complexes formed (β-CD∶D12EDMAB) and (DM-β-CD∶D12EDMAB) have stoichiometries of 1∶1, and their association constantK have been determined using a model proposed in this work, based on the additivity of the different contributions of the involved species to the speed of sound. The apparent critical micellar concentration, cmc*, of D12EDMAB is found to increase linearly upon the addition of cyclodextrin (β-CD or DM-β-CD). The free surfactant concentration in the micellar region, [D12EDMAB]f, decreases in the presence of β-CD and slightly increases in the presence of DM-β-CD. The influence of the parcial methylation of the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD⇔DM-β-CD) and of the polar head of the surfactant (D12TAB ⇔D12EDMAB) on the complextion and micellar parameters are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Four 7075-T651 aluminum alloys have been tested in tension in order to assess the applicability of the Schwalbe's model to the fracture toughness calculation. Standard K IC tests were performed on compact tension samples at room temperature, and the results compared with those from the Schwalbe's model which takes into account several mechanical properties derived from a conventional tensile test applied on round unnotched tensile samples, and the average dimple size of the corresponding fracture surfaces. The values of K IC calculated through the Schwalbe's model, correlate qualitatively well with those from the standard technique. Fracture toughness deterioration is accompanied by a loss of the true fracture strain, strain hardening capacity and average dimple size. On the other hand, the higher the Zn/Mg ratio, the volume fraction of precipitates and the yield strength, the lower the fracture toughness. All these effects are originated in the presence of matrix precipitates. Therefore, the reduction in K IC can be explained in terms of the matrix response to the applied stress field as a function of the differences in volume fraction of the strengthening precipitates. The round tension samples corresponding to the four materials, failed in a predominantly ductile transgranular fashion, which facilitates the application of the Schwalbe's model based in the characteristic dimples, developed in this mode of fracture, as a microstructural element size.

Notes: Abstract A ternary V-Ti-Si catalyst was prepared by depositing the vanadium oxide precursor on a SiO2 previously coated by TiO2. The ternary V-Ti-Si catalyst and the corresponding binary V-Ti and V-Si counterparts were tested for the selective oxidation of o-xylene to phthalic anhydride. Silica-supported vanadium oxide shows lowest activity and selectivity, meanwhile selectivity to phthalic anhydride is higher on titania-containing catalysts. The best yield to phthalic anhydride (82.5%) is obtained at 573 K on the ternary V-Ti-Si catalyst which is comparable to that claimed for the best conventional V-Ti catalysts described in literature.

Notes: Abstract A very low surface area silica-silicon substrate has been used as a support for vanadium oxide and has been tested in the partial oxidation of methane. Use of a reactor with variable dead volume ahead of the bed of the catalyst allows determining the relevance of gas phase reactions in initiating methane conversion. Experimental evidence supports that at atmospheric pressure C1 oxygenates are essentially produced on the catalyst surface rather than in the gas phase. Comparison with a high surface area silica-supported vanadium oxide catalyst clearly highlights the double role of surface area in promoting catalytic activity, but also in promoting non-selective further oxidation of reaction products. It is shown that a reaction system combining dead volume upstream the bed of the catalyst and a very low surface area is very promising to activate methane conversion to C1 oxygenates and C2+ hydrocarbons at remarkable TOF number preventing further non-selective oxidation. In addition, production of C2+ hydrocarbons is observed at temperatures as low as 750 K.
