Notes: Equipment is described which provides measurements of the pressure and volume of unidirectional liquid flow through sample cores of porous solids. The real-time measurement of flow pressures enables any changes in conductivity resulting either from interactions with the flow liquid or from changes in effective stress levels to be monitored directly. The equipment can use a range of flow liquids and be adapted for miscible and immiscible displacement studies. It is particularly suitable for cement-based and stone construction materials. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Alfvén resonances may occur on the low- and high-field sides for a low-frequency fast wave current drive scenario proposed for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) [Nucl. Fusion 31, 1135 (1991)]. At the resonance on the low-field side, the fast wave may be mode converted into a short-wavelength slow wave, which can be absorbed by electrons at the plasma edge, before the fast wave propagates into the core area of the plasma. Such absorption may cause a significant parasitic power loss. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract An extension to a 20 GHz HP8510C Network Analyzer has been built for wideband measurements between 80 and 360 GHz. Improvements relative to the first version [1], [2] include new harmonic mixers, and an active doubler. Dynamic ranges up to 60 dB in transmission and 50 dB in reflection are obtained up to 280 GHz, with more than 50 GHz instantaneous bandwidth using waveguide calibration. Detection with a 30 dB dynamic range is obtained at 320 – 360 GHz. Time domain measurements give spatial resolution down to 2 mm.

Notes: Abstract The integration of many receiver units into a receiver array is a common method of improvement of imaging systems. This approach, well known in the mm band for Schottky mixer arrays, has not so far been developed for Superconductor - Insulator - Superconductor (SIS) junction mixers, which give the best sensitivity in the short mm wave range and in the submm range. We demonstrate for the first time a practical low noise multibeam receiver module using SIS mixer technology. The basis for the integration of several SIS mixers with a common local oscillator source is given by the saturation of the SIS receiver noise dependence upon local oscillator power. The module comprises three identical SIS mixers integrated with a common local oscillator, coupled through a three branch waveguide directional coupler. The multibeam module has been developed for a focal plane array receiver of the 30 meter radio telescope of the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM).

Notes: Abstract The five antennas of the Plateau de Bure Interferometer have been instrumented with dual-channel receivers in the λ 3 mm and λ 1 mm bands. Polarisation diplexing allows simultaneous observations in the two bands. Each receiver has ambient and cryogenic calibration loads, and one receiver is equipped with a beam switching chopper for total power flux measurements. Typically the receiver noise temperatures are〈50 K in both the λ 3 mm band and the λ 1 mm band. Initial observations show that at 115 GHz the sensitivity is doubled compared to the previous receivers, and high quality fringes have been obtained at 230 GHz. Preliminary experiments show that the receiver stability is good enough to correct atmospheric phase variations by monitoring the fluctuations in atmospheric emission at 225 GHz. VLBI fringes have been detected between one 15-m antenna and the IRAM 30-m antenna in Spain.

Notes: Abstract Silvopastoral models require the development of the relationship between understorey pasture production, and the overstorey tree production. The Tikitere agroforestry trial, located near Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty, was established in Pinus radiata at a range of stockings in 1973, and monitored for stand parameters, understorey pasture production, and livestock carrying capacity between 1976 and 1992. A canopy closure model, developed for radiata pine plantations in the Bay of Plenty, shows a strong relationship (R2 ≈ 0.92) between canopy closure and the stand parameters of basal area and the ratio of green crown length to mean top height. Canopy closure was predicted for the Tikitere stands using the canopy closure model. A strong linear relationship (R2 ≈ 0.89) was shown to exist between the measured pasture production, and the predicted canopy closure. This indicates that direct assessment of canopy closure combined with a measurement of understorey pasture production, may be a simpler and more cost effective research technique than relying entirely on the continuous measurement of understorey pasture in the development of understorey/overstorey relationships.

Notes: Abstract Thin layers of In, Cu and Se were deposited at ambient temperature by thermal evaporation onto freshly cleaned glass substrates. The films were annealed in an inert atmosphere by an Argon-ion laser operating on all green lines with the power varied from 200 mW to 1 W. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The temperature-increment of the different layers under the incident laser powers were calculated theoretically. These results were used to suggest a mechanism for the formation of the CuInSe2 compound upon annealing the stack of elemental layers. It has been found that for the present form of the stack, the formation of the ternary chalcopyrite phase of CuInSe2 takes place through the appearance of the binary phase and subsequent reaction amongst them.

Notes: Abstract Single layers of Cu and In were deposited onto Mo coated glass substrates by radio frequency sputtering. The Cu11In9 phase has been found to be the majority phase in these precursors. The selenization of the sputtered layers has been achieved by depositing a 1 μm Se layer onto the precursor by thermal evaporation followed by an annealing in vacuum. Samples were annealed at different temperatures varying between 100–600°C at intervals of 50°C. The chalcopyrite structured ternary phase of CuInSe2 with a significant amount of preferential orientation in the (112) direction was obtained in samples annealed at 400°C or above. Morphological, compositional and structural analyses of the samples annealed at different temperatures were performed using a variety of complementary techniques. The results were analysed to explain the growth of CuInSe2 on the selenization of sputtered Cu–In precursors. The occurrence of various binary phases of Cu–In, Cu–Se and In–Se in different annealing temperature ranges has also been investigated. The phenomenon of volume expansion in CuInSe2 on selenization has been found to manifest itself as a shift in the characteristic (110) X-ray diffraction peak of Mo.
