Notes: An extracellular amyloglucosidase (56 kDa) of Termitomyces clypeatus which was accumulated intracellularly in absence of Krebs cycle acids in dextrin medium, remained mostly inside the plasma membrane. The enzyme was localised in mycelial vacuoles as a sucrase-amyloglucosidase aggregate. The intracellular pool contained both the free sucrase and the aggregate, while vacuoles contained only aggregate without any free enzyme. The aggregate, partially purified to PAGE homogeneity, contained amyloglucosidase and sucrase in the ratio of 1:1. A cellular regulation, influenced by the presence of Krebs cycle acids, was indicated to be present at the level of exocytosis of vacuolar enzyme.

Notes: Termitomyces clypeatus secreted a 24-kDa xylanase constitutively in xylan medium, but required a gluconeogenic amino acid or Krebs cycle acid for the secretion of a 56-kDa amyloglucosidase in dextrin medium. Aspartate, glutamate, succinate and fumarate all increased secretion of amyloglucosidase from 50% to 〉90% and enzyme production by 10-fold with little effect on xylanase production. Glutamate or succinate stimulated in vitro release of intracellular amyloglucosidase from washed mycelia in the presence of cycloheximide. Amyloglucosidase accumulated in the absence of glutamate was a high-molecular-mass protein that did not migrate in PAGE. Cellular regulation by the fungus of the secretion of amyloglucosidase is indicated.

Notes: Abstract  Low loss, tunable dielectric materials are important for phased array antenna and other device applications. Various composites of barium strontium titanium oxide (BSTO) combined with other nonelectrically active oxide ceramics have been formulated for such uses. The dielectric constant and the loss tangents of these composites have been reduced to enhance the overall impedance matching and thereby lowering the overall insertion loss of the device. The material has been fabricated in bulk ceramic, thick film, and thin film form to address a broad range of frequency applications. The material fabrication methods and the electronic properties of these composites will be discussed in this article.

Notes: Abstract Pelitic rocks were thermally metamorphosed at the contact of the Chimakurthy mafic-ultramafic igneous complex, Eastern Ghats Belt, India. The rocks show progressive change in mineralogy from biotite-sillimanite-quartz-garnet-K-feldspar (association I, 150 m from the intrusive contact) to garnet-spinel-cordierite-K-feldspar-sillimanite (association II, 20–30 m from the intrusive contact) to cordierite-K-feldspar-(cordierite-orthopyroxene-K-feldspar symplectite after osumilite)-spinel-FeTiAl oxides with/without garnet (associations III and IV, 5 m from the intrusive contact), and finally to spinel-orthopyroxene-cordierite-K-feldspar (association V, xenoliths). Oxide mineral clots in associations III and IV resemble emery-type rocks. Initial mineral reactions involved biotite-dehydration melting with partial segregation of the melt. Down-temperature mineral reactions were largely diffusion controlled and preservation of symplectitic and coronitic textures in microdomains is common. Interpretation of reaction textures in relevant petrogenetic grids for the sytems KFMASH and FMAS and combined with geothermobarometry suggest that the pelitic rocks were thermally metamorphosed at c. 6 kbar pressure along a heating-cooling trajectory within the temperature interval between c. 750 °C and c. 1000 °C.

Notes: A suite of garnet-wollastonite-scapolite-bearing calcsilicate granulites from the Eastern Ghats has been investigated to document the controls of mineral reactions during the metamorphic evolution of the deep continental crust. The rocks studied show heterogeneity in modal mineralogy and phase compositions in millimetre-sized domains. Textural relations, and the compositional plots of the phases, established that the clinopyroxene exerts a strong influence on the formation and composition of garnet in the complex natural system. P-T estimates using the vapour-independent equilibria involving garnet define a near isobaric cooling path from c. 850C at c. 5.5–5.2 kbar. The deduced trajectory tallies well with the terminal segment of the overall retrograde P-T path construed from the associated rocks using well-calibrated thermobarometers. The ubiquitous occurrence of wollastonite and scapolite in the main calcsilicate body suggests low aCO2 during peak metamorphic condition. Fluid compositions constrained from mineral-fluid equilibria of the garnet-bearing assemblages show domainal variations as a function of the compositions of the solid phases, e.g. garnet and clinopyroxene. A quantitative log/CO2-log/O2 diagram has been constructed to depict the stability of the different calcsilicate assemblages as functions of the compositions and the behaviour of these fugitive species. The results of the mineral-fluid equilibria and the quantitative fluid/rock ratio calculations, in conjunction with the topological constraints, imply vapour-deficient meta-morphism in the rocks studied. It is argued that fO2 during peak metamorphism was monitored by the ambient fO2. Subsequently, during retrogression, different domains evolved independently, whereas the fluid composition was controlled by the mineral-fluid equilibria.

Notes: We provide an alternative axiomatization of Sen's (1976) poverty measure. We derive the measure from the general definition of a poverty measure by using a version of Sen's rank order axiom, and a substantially weaker form of his normalization axiom. These two axioms, together with a continuity axiom, lead uniquely to the measure suggested by Sen (1976).

Notes: A diarrheogenic strain of non-O1/non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (10325) belonging to serogroup O34 was earlier shown to express a new type of pilus composed of a 20-kDa subunit protein. Amino-terminal sequence data (determined up to 20 amino acid residues) of this protein showed it to be different from the subunit proteins of other known types of pili of V. cholerae. On the other hand, it showed complete homology with the corresponding sequence of a 22-kDa outer membrane protein (OmpW) of V. cholerae. Expression of 10325 pili was favored in AKI rather than in NB medium and at 30°C rather than at 37°C. Further, cultural conditions favoring pilus expression also enhanced autoagglutination and adherence properties of strain 10325. An antiserum to the 20-kDa protein induced passive protection against challenge with the parent organism 10325, but not against V. cholerae O1 strains. Such protection was shown to be mediated by inhibition of intestinal colonization in vivo.

Notes: Abstract Two procedures for estimating initial states of a production line that ensure the line has a high probability of meeting the specified production target during a scheduled production shift are presented. The problem of determining desirable initial states is important in low variety, high volume production systems such as those from the automobile industry. One procedure is derived from design of experiments (DOE) theory whereas the other uses a genetic algorithm (GA). In the study it was determined that both procedures are straightforward to implement and produce good solutions to the problem. The results from the procedures are compared and their benefits and disadvantages are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The withanolide Withaperuvin E, C28H36O8, has been obtained from the air dried roots of Physalis peruviana and purified by silica gel chromatography. This compound exhibits significant antineo plastic activity. Prismatic pale yellow crystals were obtained from a methanol/acetone solution. The compound crystallizes together with a partially occupied [40(1)%] acetic acid molecule, in space group P212121, Z = 4, D c = 1.242 g cm−3, with unit, cell parameters a = 11.431(3), b = 14.104(1), c = 17.387(5)Å, V = 2803.2(11)Å3, and μ(CuKα) = 0.072mm−1. Through the X-ray analysis the molecule was found to be comprised of a steroidal skeleton with a β-oriented oxygen bridging atoms C(5) and C(6) in ring B. Steroid ring conformations are: A sofa; B sofa; C chair; D intermediate half-chair/sofa; the lactone ring E has a sofa conformation. All rings of the steroid skeleton are trans connected. The absolute configuration of the Withaperuvin E skeleton corresponds to that of naturally occurring steroids, C(18) and C(19) both being β-oriented. The partially occupied acetic acid molecule forms a hydrogen bond to the steroid molecule. Hydrogen bonding also occurs between OH(14) and a symmetry related oxygen O(20) of the steroid.
