    Notes: Land price differentials have long been used as a proxy for the value of environmental improvements in cost/benefit analysis. Both the empirical and theoretical literatures have largely ignored two important facts, however: Taxes financing local improvements are often distortionary, and amenities which influence property values in turn impact the fiscal budget, and hence the tax rate and final economic burden. Put another way, the economic cost of an improvement is endogenous to both the amenity level and the revenue structure. Extending the story in this direction for a system of open or closed spatial cities, the paper finds land rent measures to be a biased measure of the willingness to pay for amenities financed by either head taxes (benefit taxes), property taxes (excise taxes), or highway tolls (user fees). These results are used to correct the conventional specification of empirical property value regression models, which traditionally account for neither tax revenue effects nor the excess burden of distortionary taxation.

    Notes: 1. The amphipod Gammarus pulex (L.) is increasingly used in toxicity assessments and is usually obtained from wild populations. Interpopulation variability in response to toxicants may be due to genetic or phenotypic differences and could be large in wild-caught organisms exposed to different environmental conditions. This paper describes an investigation designed to assess the extent of lethal and sublethal variability between four different G. pulex populations when exposed to zinc, and to determine whether differences observed in the parental generation were also apparent in offspring bred in the laboratory.2. The mortality of G. pulex from one of the four field-caught populations (Crags Stream) was significantly lower than for animals from the other three populations for the first 2 days of exposure. After 6 days’ exposure the LC50 values for all four populations did not differ significantly, and were approximately 1.0 mg Zn 1-−1. Sublethal effects on feeding rate after 6 days’ exposure were also similar for all four populations (feeding rate EC50 approximately 0.5 mg Zn 1-−1).3. Lethal effects on the F1 generation were similar among the four populations, in contrast to the short-term differences observed in the parental generation. These results suggest that interpopulation differences in zinc tolerance in G. pulex are short-lived, and phenotypically rather than genetically based.

    Notes: The damselfish genus Dascyllus comprises nine species of both large- and small-bodied fishes distributed over the entire Indo-West Pacific. Most members of the genus have polygynous mating systems with protogynous sex change, while others are promiscuous with no sex change. Hypotheses linking presumed phylogenetic relationships with body size, sex change and mating structure have been proposed previously. However, lack of a strong phylogenetic hypothesis has prevented the careful testing of such hypotheses. In this study, the phylogenetic relationships between Dascyllus species based on mitochondrial DNA sequences (cytochrome b and 16SrRNA) have been established. The data also shed light on the relationship between mating structure and body size, as well as on the complex biogeographical patterns of the genus.

    Notes: Water relations, desiccation tolerance and longevity of Taxus brevifolia (Nutt.) seeds were studied to determine the optimal stage of development and storage conditions for seeds of this species. Seeds equilibrated to a range of relative humidities (RHs) had unusually low water contents which can be accounted for by the high lipid content of gametophyte tissues (71% of the dry mass). Water relations of embryonic tissue were more typical of those reported for other seed species. The water content below which freezing transitions were not observable in the embryo was ca 0.24 g H2O (g dry weight)−1 (g g−1) for all maturity classes studied. Embryos did not achieve significant levels of desiccation tolerance (survival to water contents less than 0.5 g g−1) until the latter stages of development when dry matter was maximal. Mature embryos could be dried to 0.025 g g−1 (seed water content of 0.010 g g−1) with no loss of viability. Thus, at the latter stages of development, embryo water content could be optimized to avoid both desiccation and freezing damage. Survival of mature seeds declined over a 2-year period when seeds were stored at temperatures between 5 and 35°C and RHs between 14 and 75%, corresponding to seed water contents between 0.015 and 0.07 g g−1. The deterioration rate was slowest for seeds stored at the lowest RH and temperature. Our data indicate that seeds of Taxus brevifolia show orthodox rather than recalcitrant storage characteristics, but that the optimum water content for storage was extremely low. The results suggest that even if stored at optimal water contents and low temperatures, T. brevifolia seeds will be relatively short lived. The high quantity of lipids or reducing sugars may be contributing factors in the poor storage characteristics.

    Description: A study of sea ice in the northern Weddell Sea was done, relating the ice motion, determined using an array of satellite-tracked drifters, deployed into ice floes, to parameters describing the nature of the ice cover, obtained from an analysis of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imagery. It was found that the ice motion was predominantly wind-driven, responding to the passage of low-pressure systems across the area. The correlation length of the strain field over the entire measurement period was around 200 km. At high concentrations the ice responded as a rigid body with coherent motion, but below a concentration of around 93%, differential motion occurred. The nature of the ice motion was found to depend upon the lead parameters, with low values of pure convergence and divergence and larger values of vorticity and deformation of the ice field. The vorticity was found to be well correlated with the atmospheric pressure, with a time lag of less than 3 h, implying an almost instantaneous response of the ice cover to meteorological forcing.

    Description: Properties of the surface and bottom circulation in the north-west Weddell and south Scotia seas in the region 59–66°S, 36–46°W are examined. The bottom currents have been recorded at different heights from 5–800 m above the seabed, and surface velocities have been obtained from the drift tracks of ARGOS buoys deployed in ice floes. The tidal regime is mixed and the power of motions at inertial frequencies is very variable and most dominant in the Scotia Sea. Flow is influenced by topography, effects of which are seen in eddy features and the damping of inertial motions in some areas. The sea ice motion is shown to be influenced by the bottom topography at very low frequencies whilst tidal periodicities observed in the north-western Weddell Sea are below the level of the noise in the region of the study. In this area the higher frequency ice motion is mainly wind driven with little of the energy being transferred to the underlying deep water.
